She inherited incredible fury from her ancestors. The wrath that flows through her veins is her legacy. The terrible pain she suffered set it off. Swift and lethal, The Spirit exacts her revenge endlessly.
~ A unknown figure on The Spirit.

Rin Yamaoka, better known as The Spirit, is one of the playable killers in Dead by Daylight. She is a vengeful wraith who, in life, was a shy young student before being murdered by her mentally ill father. She is also the descendant of Kazan Yamaoka, a wrathful samurai who was turned into The Oni for his malicious pride.

She was voiced by Gabrielle Murphy.

Appearance[]

Rin has messy black hair that always floats upwards, pale skin with a bluish hue, gashes all over her body, glass shards stuck in her right shoulder and legs, glowing blue eyes, and bandages covering parts of her body. She wields a rusty and bloody katana with several chunks missing.

Biography[]

Rin was the only child of the Yamaoka family who became deep in debt after her mother became ill. This required Rin to work part-time and her father to work almost all the time to try and get a promotion, which caused him to begin losing sleep as a dark whisper reminded him of his hopeless situation. But the worst came when her father begged his superiors for anything to gain more money, only for the company had launched a faulty product which caused the man to receive the blame and be fired for it. This caused him to snap, causing her father to viciously murder her mother. After Rin came home to see the damage he done, her father attacked her, only to be stopped, slashed several times by her father's katana, and thrown through a partition. Now bleeding from the sword and the glass, she vowed vengeance as her life faded away. As she died, a dark mist enveloped her and fueled her rage. Resurrected, Rin is implied to have murdered her father as she became a servant to The Entity, becoming known as The Spirit.

Steeped in Blood[]

Rin's lore from her tome Steeped in Blood further revealed that she came from a lineage tainted by rage and sense of honor.

Her father encouraged her to master the shinai in order to uphold her legacy as she is a Yamaoka. She was concerned about his issues, but refused to add up to his pain. At school, she was bullied a lot, with her classmates calling her "Janitor Yamaoka" and mocking her swordplay. One day, she was having a practice spar when she was filled with thoughts to defeat another human being from a "dragon in her heart", but she was initially confused about these strange thoughts at first. When she defeated her opponent, she felt powerful and worthy of the Yamaoka name.

Soon, she was attacked by her bullies, jealous of her skills. She tried to flee and hide from them, but the dragon in her heart admonished her for her cowardice. In the evening, she was walking home when the bullies attacked her again, this time beating her up mercilessly. Her feelings awoke the dragon, which was actually the rage she inherited from the Yamaoka lineage, and she attacked them until they shed blood. Seething with rage, Rin had awakened the strength of her ancestors.

In other media[]

The Spirit appears in the spin-off visual novel called Hooked on You alongside The Wraith, The Trapper and The Huntress.

Trivia[]

  • She is based off the Japanese spirits called Onryo. A spirit who died so tragically their main existence in the afterlife is to seek revenge.
    • It's possible she was based off of Sadako Yamamura, who later was added to Dead by Daylight. Their similarities are being killed by their fathers and turned into Onryo's, despite the weak link it's common for original killers to be based off horror icons,
  • The Spirit is the second killer in Dead by Daylight that has not actually killed anyone or have been particularly evil before coming to the Entity's realm. The first being the Hag or Lisa Sherwood.
    • Originally, the Entity wanted Rin's father. However, due to Rin's rage and despair of being killed along with her mother, she was chosen instead.
  • Her chapter is the first in Dead by Daylight to be given a follow-up chapter in the form of Chapter 13: Cursed Legacy. Additionally, she is the first character to have a character directly related to her in the game.
