When smoke rises from the seven rings, The pinkfish will emerge from the sea, devouring all the creatures of the land.
~ A Sunken Scroll about the Salmonids.

The Salmonids are the secondary antagonists of the Splatoon franchise. They are a race of chaotic and barbaric fish that resides in the wasteland outside of Inkopolis Square and Splatsville.

History and Behavior[]

Salmonid sunked scroll-0

A Sunken Scroll about the Salmonids.

Sunken Scrolls that tells about the Salmonids can be found in the single-player mode. These scrolls indicates that the Salmonids were always chaotic beings, emerging from seas and devouring Inklings, with a Sunken Scroll displaying that an Inkling religion demonises the fishes as insatiable and greedy predators. According to the Grizzco employee handbook, during pre-medieval times, a rush of Salmonids would completely destroy cities before more advanced defense maneuvers were created, with less damaging but equally invasive runs called Big Runs occurring in Splatoon 3, emerging onto land from giant ink spouts. A migration of Salmonids happens every 70 years, which is seemingly happening during the events of Splatoon 2, with younger Salmonid also taking part in similar Salmon Runs to return to their spawning places and mature.

In the game, they are targeted by a mysterious company called Grizzco Industries lead by Mr. Grizz. There, they would send a team of four comprising of either Inklings, Octolings, or a mix of both into the Salmonids territory and task them with collecting Golden Eggs. While Grizzco claims that they are vital components for the modern lifestyle, it's later revealed that Mr. Grizz is using the Golden Eggs as ingredients for his Fuzzy Ooze which he plans to use to turn all sea life into mammals. However, it's mentioned that Golden Eggs are also high-quality power sources, which is likely why Grizzco continues collecting them after Mr. Grizz's defeat.

Salmonids in general are barbaric fighters that attack egg collectors without remorse, however, they show some sense of honor towards their ancestors as they take good care of the weapons passed down to them. Salmonids also believe that dying in battle or being eaten is the greatest honor as it perpetuates the circle of life, and thus wield weapons such as cookware to make themselves more appetizing, even riding in giant grills during the Griller event, with the food-themed sculptures in the background of most stages being built by the Salmonids as well. Lesser Salmonids use cookware such as frying pans and spoons as weapons, while Boss Salmonids uses more advanced weaponry such as bombs and improvised military weapons such as rocket launchers made of coolers. In addition, they also have a great sense of smell, allowing them to track down Inklings even if they're hiding in their ink.

Salmonids are also stated to trade with the Octarians, giving them Power Eggs to fuel their cities in return for Octarian tech, with one of the Boss Salmonoids, the Slammin' Lid having its aircraft stated to be made of state-of-the-art Octarian technology, and the propellers Snatchers ride in Splatoon 3 and the helmets of the Chinooks appearing to be Octocopter helmets. Likewise, Scrapper vehicles seem to incorporate the shields of armored Octotroopers as windscreens.

Salmonid are also shown to appreciate music, playing it to boost morale before battle. The best musicians in Salmonid clans form special bands to cheer up their fellow soldiers, with all Salmon Run music in-game being played by the band Omega-3, with the title "Omega" only being awarded to the best bands. It is also possible that Salmonids can be "awakened" by listening to Calamari Inkantation, a song which is supposedly etched into the DNA of the Inklings and Octarians, possibly by extent all sentient marine life as shown by how Little Buddy, a non hostile Smallfry, can be heard humming the song occasionally when found in the Splatsville plaza.

Salmonid culture revolves greatly around clan honor, living in small huts made of scrap that can be seen in the Spawning Grounds map and with many Salmonids believing clan honor is more important than their lives. Likewise, most Salmonids do not even have names, having no such need for them due to the unity of the clan. Instead, they possess titles, with one example being the title of Omega-3's cellist, "The first child of Alkyne, the Hidden Blade of Yakiharas". This in turn implies that famous or powerful Salmonids are the only ones with names.

Salmonids are also more advanced than they seem, possessing strict military routines to train regular Salmonid into Boss Salmonid, their own Salmonid engineers to develop technology, as well as specialised barracks for Cohock to practice their charges. Their huts are also stated to possess flotation devices to prevent the foodstuffs stored inside from getting soaked during a tsunami every four years, showing that Salmonid can plan into the future. Salmonids also appear adept at reusing discarded items or places, as shown from how they've repurposed a collapsed highway into the concert venue known as "Jammin' Salmon Junction". The "Merry Fishmas 2018" art also implies that when not battling Salmonids are generally peaceful, enjoying hobbies such as fishing or playing cards. The existence of the stage Bonerattle Arena, with a Salmonid announcer present, also implies that civilian Salmonids also enjoy watching Salmon Runs for their own entertainment, implying that this activity could be somewhat of a gladiatorial sport to them.

In Splatoon 3, at least once a season in game, the Salmonids decide to take the fight to the Inklings and Octolings of Splatsville and Inkopolis with attacking the cities in what is dubbed the "Big Run". During the Big Run, the skies are an ominous red or pink, Grizzco helicopters circle or pass overhead, advertisement billboards show a Grizzco Big Run alert advertisement indefinitely, the streets, buildings, and trains are covered with Big Run posters, and within the Grizzco lobby, a red alarm light blazes as the sounds of the Salmonids trying to break in can be heard with banging every so often. In Inkopolis Plaza, the sounds of battle with the Salmonids can be heard, including the sounds of Boss and King Salmonids.

Types of Salmonids[]

Lesser Salmonids[]

Lesser Salmonids are the basic Salmonids and enemies in the mode. They drop Power Eggs when defeated. They can also make upward jumps of unlimited heights to attack players who linger on walls too long.

Chum[]

Chums

Chum

Chums are the most common Salmonids in the mode. While they are not strong alone, they can become a huge threat when in a group. They wield frying pans as weapons. In the event Salmon Rush, Chums becomes aggravated due to the presence of Glowflies, making them much more faster and stronger, and will group up on anybody who is unfortunate enough to have the Glowflies swarming around them. Under the effect of Glowflies, the sclerae of the Chums will turn red as well, and their eyes grow darker in color due to their Glowfly-induced berserker state.

Cohock[]

Cohock

Cohock

Cohocks are the biggest, slowest, and strongest of the Lesser Salmonids. Like the Chums, Cohocks uses frying pans as weapon. They are very strong, can deal serious damage to an egg collector, and take a lot of damage to defeat. They are the only Lesser Salmonids to appear in the event Cohock Charge, where the sea levels are dropped to reveal a shoreline. The Cohock spawn around the shorelines and the players must fight them and the Boss Salmonids off using Ink Cannons that were provided by Mr. Grizz from deployable pods near the egg basket. If a Cohock gets a splat, he takes a moment to laugh in triumph before turning to another victim.

Smallfry[]

Small Fry

Smallfry

Smallfries are the smallest and weakest of the Salmonids, but also the fastest being baby Salmonids. Although they are weak on their own, Smallfry tend to appear in groups and gang up on an egg collector, making them quite dangerous. Smallfries use plastic spoons as their weapons in battle.

In Splatoon 3, the player keeps a Smallfry that acts as a companion in the Story Mode, helping the player to distract opponents, ink far away targets, destroy boxes and deal damage as well as assisting in removing the Fuzzy Ooze. It also plays a role in defeating Mr. Grizz in the final battle by transforming into Hugefry via the concentrated marine life power imbued into it via the Calamari Inktation 3MIX.

Snatcher[]

Snatcher

Snatcher

Snatchers are Salmonids that appear when Golden Eggs are left on the ground. They are the only Salmonids in the game to not attack the players. Instead, they are tasked with picking up the Golden Eggs that were left by slain Boss Salmonids and retreat with them. They can carry up to three Golden Eggs. Inklings must splat the Snatcher before it retreats to reclaim the eggs. In Splatoon 3, Snatchers now ride in copter helmets, possibly to accommodate for the new Fish Stick Boss Salmonids that drop their Golden Eggs on the top of their pillars. This time, they can approach from any direction to retrieve the Golden Eggs, using a spatula to scoop them up, and can possibly carry more than three at a time this go-around before withdrawing back to the water, especially out of reach of most weapons used by the Inklings and Octolings.

According to the Salmonid field guide, Snatchers are inexperienced rookies who are sent out to reclaim eggs and avoid direct confrontation. Those who succeed continue to rise the ranks, becoming Boss Salmonid sooner or later.

Chinook[]

Chinooks

A Chinook carrying a crate.

Chinooks are Salmonids that only appear during the Mothership event. They wear copter hats that allows them to fly. They carry crates that contain other Lesser Salmonids and drop them off on the ground before retreating. Inklings must splat the Chinook before it escapes to retrieve Golden Eggs. In addition, the crates can also be destroyed to prevent other Salmonids from appearing.

Boss Salmonids[]

Boss Salmonids are strong Salmonids that use more advanced weaponry to defeat the Inklings and Octolings. The objective of the mode is to defeat the Boss Salmonids and collect their Golden Eggs to meet the egg quota before time runs out. Each Boss Salmonids requires a different strategy to defeat, though all can be damaged by the Grizzco Slosher or instantly splatted by a charged Grizzco Splatana even in states where they're immune to ink attacks, sans the Stinger.

Steelhead[]

Steelhead

A Steelhead firing its bomb.

Steelhead are very big Salmonids with protective scales and are the commanders of Salmonid troops. They are the biggest and slowest enemy in the mode. They attack by creating a bomb from the top of their head, then throwing the bomb and exploding it, splatting any Inklings caught within its blast radius. Due to their steely scales from arduous training, Steelheads are immune to the Inklings weapons. To defeat Steelheads, the Inklings must shoot the bomb on its head before it fires to make it explode, splatting the Steelhead in the process along with any other Salmonoid in the vicinity. The Grizzco Slosher can also be used to instantly ink the bomb and splat the Steelhead, though precise aiming is required.

Steel Eel[]

Steel eel

A Steel Eel.

Steel Eels are very long weapons made up by ink-sprayers that are piloted by a Salmonid at the tail. Due to their great length, Steel Eels can ink a large portion of the territory. Its ink-sprayers will instantly splat any Inklings it touches and block the Inklings attack. Steel Eels with pursue a target until that target is splatted, at which the Steel Eel with pursue another target. Steel Eels are defeated by shooting the pilot, and can be stopped by luring them around a ledge while another player trails behind and splats the pilot. However, once the pilot is splatted, the head is still dangerous to touch until it bursts apart into scrap metal seconds after the pilot is slain.

According to the Salmonid field guide, the pilots of the Steel Eel wear masks to protect themselves from the machine's ink spray. Curiously, Steel Eels have a rendered face underneath their masks and lack the crooked teeth of most Salmonids.

Maws[]

Maws

A Maw about to splat an Inkling.

Maws are large Salmonids that lurk underneath their ink. They use their sonar to detect prey, then pursue them. Maws mostly stay submerged in their ink, only popping out when attacking, and is capable of swimming up walls. A Maw will relentlessly pursue its victim until they are splatted, at which the Maw will seek out another victim. Any Inklings that are caught by Maws are instantly splatted. To defeat Maws, Inkling must place a bomb in the area it's about to pop up, causing the Maw to swallow the bomb and explode. Maws can also be defeated by shooting at them, but takes more time and effort. They can also be instantly defeated, even when submerged, by a fully charged Grizzco Splatana.

According to the Salmonid field guide, to sustain themselves Maws must continually hunt for prey or they will starve.

Flyfish[]

Flyfish

A Flyfish firing its missiles.

Flyfish are Smallfries that pilots an ink-jet which has 2 missile launchers. The Flyfish attacks by firing up to 8 missiles that lock on to the Inklings. With the exception of the special Sting Ray weapon, Flyfish are immune to the Inklings attack. To defeat a Flyfish, Inklings must throw their Splat Bombs into the missile launcher while the Flyfish is firing. Once both of the missile launchers are destroyed, the Flyfish plummets to the ground and crashes.

It is also possible to splat them using a Grizzco Slosher, a Killer Wail 5.1 or Sting Ray aimed at the cockpit, while the launchers can be destroyed with an Explosher, Inkjet, Ink Cannon or one of the Crab Tank's attacks. If the missile launchers are open, one can use the egg cannon to instantly splat the Flyfish during the Xtrawave.

According to the Salmonid field guide, the ink-jets Flyfish pilot are the latest model of Salmonid engineering, and are equipped with multiple functions to ensure smooth hovering, with only the most elite Smallfry becoming Flyfish pilots.

Drizzler[]

Drizzler

A Drizzler exposed.

Drizzlers are Salmonids that uses a big metal umbrella as shields. With the exception of the Sting Ray and Grizzco Slosher, the umbrella will block the Inklings attacks. Drizzlers first find a place to land, and once they're on ground, they fire a missile that, if left alone, will create a inkstorm that damages the Inklings. The Drizzler will be vulnerable to the Inklings weapons during that time, as it will flip over, exposing itself, due to the recoil of firing its missile. The missiles that the Drizzler shoots have metal casing, but comes off right before it creates the inkstorm, allowing the Inklings to shoot the missile and send it back to the Drizzler, splatting it in one hit. Drizzlers can also be splatted by shooting it when it's exposed. Once a Drizzler fires two missiles from its current position, it will jump to another spot to repeat the cycle.

According to the Salmonid field guide, Drizzlers are mostly renegade Salmonids who enjoy fighting solo on their own terms.

Scrapper[]

Scrapper

A Scrapper

Scrappers are Salmonids that drive an vehicle while leaving a trail of ink. Scrappers are slow, but will pursue a Inkling relentlessly. Scrappers can bump into Inklings, making it harder for them to deal with other Boss Salmonids, and may even bump them into water, which dissolves Inklings. Scrappers are splatted by shooting at them by their behind. Their front is protected by the vehicle (except for the Sting Ray, which ignores the armor and the Grizzco Slosher which bypasses most armor), but shooting at the front enough can stun the Salmonid and leave it vulnerable.

According to the Salmonid field guide, the vehicle Scrappers drive is an envied possession of many Salmonids. It appears to be made from the scrap of an armoured Octotrooper's vehicle. playing the Octarian "Onward" jingle if sufficiently damaged.

Stinger[]

Stinger

A Stinger.

Stingers are Salmonids snipers that are on top of a tower of cooking pots which it uses to increase the pressure of its ink. Stinger tend to spawn and remain close to the shoreline. They attack using ink beams that have very long range and are capable of firing through walls. This makes Stingers a huge threat from a distance. The Salmonid is immune to the Inklings attacks, so to defeat it, Inklings must shoot at the pots, knocking them away and causing the Stinger to fall on the burner.

According to the Salmonid field guide, Stingers have to wear protective armor to keep themselves from getting hurt by the high-pressure ink. Stingers also have rendered snouts behind their nozzles and have wonky teeth like other Salmonids.

Fish Stick[]

Fish Sticks

A Fish Stick.

Fish Sticks are large poles of indestructible scrap metal carried by Smallfry wearing propeller hats. Upon their arrival, the Fish Stick will drill into the ground and stay there, with the Smallfry spitting out ink in a circle around the pole, effectively denying area around the pole. To get rid of the Smallfry, the player must ink the pole and climb up it before splatting the Salmonids circling it. The pole remains even after the Smallfry are splatted however, and can be used as a vantage point later on in the shift.

They can be heard singing in battle, which according to the Salmonid field guide is meant to cheer on their fellow soldiers. This singing in turn means that their lung capacity is increased, so some Fish Stick pilots eventually train to become Stingers instead.

Flipper-Flopper[]

Flipper Floppers

An armored Flipper-Flopper.

Flipper-Floppers are long, streamlined Salmonids that are protected by dolphin-like helmets they wear, giving it immense health. They will appear in a puddle of ink before spraying a ring of ink onto the ground, levitating in the air and after a while will drop down and enter the ring, completely inking it and splatting any players in it. However if the ring is completely filled with ink before it hops in, the helmet will break and it will be rendered helpless and can be splatted much easier, with its health being sharply reduced once the helmet breaks.

The player need not completely fill the ring as once around 80% of the ring is filled, the rest will automatically fill up with player ink.

According to the Salmonid field guide, Flipper-Floppers appear like dolphins as they idolise them, and are quite vain, putting more focus on the beauty of their attacks than usefulness.

Slammin' Lid[]

Slammin Lid

A Slammin' Lid.

Slammin' Lids are Salmonids piloting UFO-like aircraft that generate barriers from underneath that block ink attacks, as well as spawning lesser Salmonids from their portholes. If a player walks underneath one, the Slammin' Lid will attempt to drop down and squish them, so in order to defeat one the player must bait one into dropping, dodge the attack and attack its pilot, or if possible, climb onto the aircraft and splat the pilot. The pilot is not defenseless however, and will use a ladle to smack the player off the aircraft if they remain for too long. Slammin' Lids are one of the only Salmonids capable of splatting other Salmonids, so it is possible to bait one of them into dropping onto another Boss Salmonid, and thus it is advised to try and keep them alive if there are large hordes of lesser Salmonoids or challenging Boss Salmonids.

According to the Salmonid field guide, Slammin' Lids are only piloted by veteran Salmonids due to their high level of technology, and to save on weight, have no weapons on board except for the pilot's ladle.

Big Shot[]

Big Shots are large, muscled Salmonids wearing aquamarine tank tops that emerge from the ocean with cannons, loading cannonballs into them which release ink shockwaves upon landing that players must jump over to avoid damage. Fortunately, Big Shots do not attack players near them and can be easily splatted if in close proximity, with the cannon usable to shoot Golden Eggs closer to the basket. The player must act fast however, as Big Shots will go back into the sea to load more cannonballs, delaying the time they have to splat the Salmonids.

SRNW BIG SHOT

A Big Shot and its cannon.

If multiple Big Shots spawn, they will all use the same cannon. According to the Salmonoid field guide, more level-headed muscular Salmonids are assigned to be Big Shots while the more belligerent ones become Steelheads, with Big Shots taking charge of festive events such as firework launching when not in combat.

Known Occurrences[]

Known Occurrences are rare types of Boss Salmonids that only spawn in special events, such as fog or altered tide levels. Their presence will be announced by Mr. Grizz, and they are always accompanied by other strange occurrences such as Glowflies or fog.

Goldie[]

Goldie

A Goldie.

Goldies are Salmonids that, as they name suggest, have shining gold bodies, wear togas and have jewelry such as fin piercings and rings . Unlike the others Boss Salmonids, Goldies don't use any of the more advanced weapons, and instead use a frying pan, just like Chums. However, they are stronger and faster, and will get even faster as they take more damage. In the Goldie Seeking event, Goldies hide in one of the gushers, which forces the Inklings to try to find the Goldie by shooting the gushers. They only appear during the Fog, Salmon Rush, and Goldie Seeking events, and are the only Boss Salmonids to appear during the latter two. Splatoon 3 has the Goldies forego using their frying pans to attack and simply use their fins/fisticuffs to attack Inklings and Octolings directly.

According to the Salmonid field guide, only 1 in every 10,000 Salmonids is a Goldie, with Goldies living longer lives and being more intelligent. While genderless in the English version, Mr. Grizz refers to the Goldies as female in the Dutch translations.

Griller[]

Griller

A Griller and a group of Smallfrys.

Grillers are Boss Salmonids that only appear during the Griller event. They are armored vehicles that relentless pursue an Inkling until they are splatted, at which point the Griller will pursue another Inkling. A Griller's target is determined by a laser pointed at them, and any players that touch its ink are instantly splatted. In addition, Grillers are also accompanied by Smallfries that ride in the Grillers. Grillers have an exposed tail, which the player must shoot at to stun them. When stunned, more tails will be exposed, which must be shoot at to destroy the Griller.

According to the Salmonid field guide, the reason for the Griller's rarity is its cost, with operating a single one requiring the cost of a hundred regular Salmonids.

Mothership[]

Mothership-0

The Mothership and a Chinook.

The Mothership is a Boss Salmonid that only appears during The Mothership event. As the name implies, it is a large ship that the Salmonids uses as a last resort. Chinooks will come out of the Mothership and drop of crates containing Lesser Salmonids. Inklings must splat the Chinooks before they escape to receive Golden Eggs in this event. During the event, the Mothership will approach the basket containing the eggs and attach its nozzle to it, sucking up the Golden Eggs. Inklings must shoot at the nozzle to push it back. This is the only point in Salmon Run where it is possible to lose collected Golden Eggs. Mr. Grizz will advise when the Mothership prepares and starts to move in on the basket, and the Mothership is equipped with lights to indicate when it is moving to take back the eggs: Green is normal operation, yellow is preparing, and red is advancing to take back the Golden Eggs. If aimed correctly, one can also use a long ranged weapon to damage the boxes and Chinooks on the Mothership, “farming” Golden Eggs from it.

According to the Salmonid field guide, when not in warfare, the Mothership is used to ship Power Eggs from the Salmonid to their trade allies such as the Octarians.

Mudmouth[]

Mudmouth

A regular Mudmouth at full health.

Mudmouths are tall, ghostly Salmonids that seem to be composed of a strange mud. They are immobile, spawning Lesser Salmonids from their mouths. They can be damaged by throwing bombs into their mouths, causing them to drop Golden Eggs and wilt, revealing piles of garbage underneath, and when splatted will drop the usual amount of 3 Golden Eggs.

Golden Mudmouths are similar Salmonids that, as their name suggests, are gold in color and drop more Golden Eggs. However, instead of Chum or Smallfrys, they instead spawn Cohocks, making them a much bigger threat.

According to the Salmonid field guide, Mudmouths were believed to be ghostly spirits that haunted the Splatlands beaches, but after a Grizzco worker chucked a bomb down its mouth, it was revealed that they are simply pipes with Salmonids stuck in them coated in mud, with one being able to see a Salmonid being shown thrown up into the air and splatted once a Mudmouth is destroyed for a split second.

King Salmonids[]

King Salmonids are gigantic Salmonids that appear exclusively during the Xtrawave event of the Salmon Run, which players will be alerted to by an off-key version of the wave completion jingle playing, before the alarm klaxon blares as "EMERGENCY!" flashes on screen before the King Salmonid makes his entrance. They must be defeated within a time limit, with players being supplied Egg Cannons to fire Golden Eggs at the King Salmonoids to deal more damage, with other Boss and Lesser Salmonids spawning during the wave. It is advisable for teammates with high DPS weapons to focus their attacks on the King Salmonid while the others defeat bosses and attack mainly with their Egg Cannons, using the Egg Cannons on other bosses as needed to gain Golden Eggs more efficiently.

The chance of spawning a King Salmonid is also increased with every consecutive shift the player takes without encountering one, with the King Salmonid gradually learning their scent. This is indicated by the Salmometer gauge, which, the more it's filled, increases the chance of a King Salmonid appearing, with full Salmometers for each player guaranteeing the appearance of one. The type of King Salmonid that will be summoned is indicated by the gauge's shape.

Currently there are three King Salmonids in-game: Cohozuna, Horrorboros, and Megalodontia, all of which drop Bronze, Silver and Gold scales upon their defeat which can be used to buy different cosmetics and wares from the Grizzco window where normal rewards from Salmon Runs are collected. When splatted, King Salmonids explode into a giant burst of ink, while all other Boss and Lesser Salmonids disappear since the King was defeated.

Cohozuna[]

1600px-S3 SRNW 20

A Cohozuna

Cohozuna are ginormous, obese Cohocks that tower over every single other Boss Salmonid in game, possibly being one of the largest enemies in all of Splatoon. They have bulging white eyes, a more ruffled Mohawk hairstyle and have numerous chains wrapped around them, as well as wearing pants with two belts. Cohozuna also bear a slight resemblance to the 2014 version of Godzilla. Their name alone references the highest rank of sumo wrestling that can be obtained, reserved only for grand champions of the sport, the yokozuna.

The Cohozuna has two primary attacks: flopping belly-first onto players and splatting them or leaping high into the air before landing and creating a huge puddle of ink and splatting all crushed by it, with the impact site being marked by a marker similar to the Splashdown attack.

Despite not posing much of a threat to players, its large healthbar could mean that it takes a while for it to be splatted, as well as the fact its large size can obstruct players. It is also surprisingly mobile and chasing it down could exhaust the time needed to splat it quickly, especially with the high amount of Boss Salmonids present in the phase. It's advised for players to lure the Cohozuna nearer to Golden Eggs, allowing teammates to fire them more easily, or to trap it at ledges it can't climb until it uses its Splashdown attack.

Horrorboros[]

Screenshot 2023-03-04 at 3.31

The Horrorboros's introduction

Horrorboros appear to be gigantic, serpentine Salmonids resembling eastern dragons that are somehow capable of flight, being much longer than the Cohozuna. They have a pair of horn-like fins on their heads, bulging, yellow glowing eyes like the Cohozuna along with what appears to be buoy-like lanterns tied together trailing behind them, with said lanterns glowing as it charges its attack. Inside its mouth it possesses a pan-like device from which it produces what appear to be gigantic versions of the Steelhead's bombs, with said device appearing to be connected to its body with wires. It also wears green pants with metal straps.

The Horrorboros will fly low to the ground and while mostly passive, periodically will launch bombs from its mouth which function like Booyah Bombs, covering huge amounts of ground. While it possesses a health pool too large to be depleted in time with regular attacks, attacking the bomb in Horrorboros's mouth will deal massive amounts of damage to it. As Golden Eggs can be used to ink the bomb, it's advised for players to aim their Egg Cannons towards the bomb in the Horrorboros's mouth instead of its body, with high DPS and long ranged weapon users also focusing their attacks on the bomb.

Megalodontia

The Megalodontia in its teaser image

Megalodontia[]

The Megalodontia is a titanic, Maws-like King Salmonid wearing orthodontic braces over its large teeth. It has a tuft of blue fins on its head, bulging white eyes like the other King Salmonids and appears to be covered in nets, with a red bump covered with black bandages on its back serving as a weak point.

Despite possessing the most health of any Salmonid, the Megalodontia is also incredibly limited in attacks, only being capable of performing a bite when it surfaces to attack, lingering at the surface for several seconds before diving down again. Players should use this opportunity to target the weak point on its back, and note that said point always faces the direction of its previous attack. As the Megalodontia's bite also splats other Salmonids, it can be lured into attacking Boss Salmonids so that their Golden Eggs can be collected more easily.

Trivia[]

  • If one looks closely, they will realize that Chum, Cohocks and Goldies can wield two variants of a frying pan, with one variant being a regular pan with a wooden handle and the other possessing a Salmonid emblem, a metal handle and having circular rings on it, being smoother in shape as well.
  • It is implied that Salmonids might prey on Inklings and Octolings as one of the developers Hisashi Nagami states that despite many species of sea life being evolved, parts of the food chain remain. As salmon eat squid, it is likely they have continued doing so even after they and the squid have evolved into Salmonids and Inklings respectively, which is possibly why Maws attack by eating players.
    • Likewise, what seems to be salmon fillets are also seen in refrigerators in one of the stages Mako Mart, implying that Inklings eat Salmonids as well.
      • However, the salmon fillets may simply come from regular, unevolved salmon that still exist in the oceans as it has been shown the intelligent sea creatures of the Splatoon world do consume other non-evolved sea life, with fishing boats being seen in some Salmon Run maps, a stall selling takoyaki (a kind of Japanese snack made of batter and octopus) being found in Splatsville where Octolings have been shown to have inhabited for quite a while, as well as the fact Crusty Sean appears to serve up prawn tempura in his food truck.
  • Despite being sentient creatures, it has been stated by the developers that Salmonid culture is very different from Octoling and Inkling culture, and thus it is incredibly unlikely that Salmonids can integrate as well as them into their society.
    • Despite this, Salmonid are frequently treated as regular animals in Splatoon media, sparking ire from fans who wish to see them treated as people.
  • There was a glitch in Splatoon 3 which caused the Mudmouths to teleport rapidly around the stage, making it nigh impossible to throw bombs or even splat them, causing many failed runs. Fortunately, it appears that the glitch has since been patched.
  • Flyfishes and Maws are the only Salmonids with confirmed genders, with Mr. Grizz addressing all Flyfishes as male and Maws as female.
  • As Salmonid resemble salmon in their spawning phase with their hooked chins, misaligned teeth and somewhat reddish snout tints, it is possible that for most of their lives Salmonid actually appear different, only adopting such an appearance during a salmon run.
    • This maybe proven correct by artwork of the Salmonid band ω-3, with its members possessing rounder snouts and varying pupil shapes, with the youngest member, the DJ having rectangular ones in contrast to the round ones most other Salmonids possess, although Maws and Goldies do possess similar pupils shapes.
    • Majority of the Salmonids fought in-game may also be female as male spawning salmon possess hunched backs, while most of the Salmonid troops do not despite looking like spawning salmon. This also somewhat makes sense to why they are so aggressive as they are trying to defend their eggs from being stolen, having an urge to protect their offspring, or at least what looks like their offspring.
      • Ironically, the only confirmed female Salmonid in-game, the Maws, has a hunched back like male spawning salmon.
  • Salmonid culture may also be partially based off Native American cultures, as the indigenous people of the Pacific Northwest call themselves the salmon people, regarding the salmon as a particularly important food from their creator deity. Likewise, the graffiti around the Salmon Run stages, implied to be made by the Salmonids themselves, resemble indigenous art created by the Native Americans, with the Salmonids also having a belief of becoming "one with the world" once they die which is similar to many Native American beliefs of connecting to the nature around them.
    • Moreover, Salmonid "hair" resembles the crests of Spartan helmets, referencing their warlike nature.
  • The Horrorboros has become infamous in the Splatoon community lately for its eerie cry which was featured in the March Big Run announcement, causing some to remark Nintendo appears to be making their Big Run announcements similar to fan made ones which are notable in using styles of analog horror.
    • The slightly electronic filter on Horrorboros's voice might also imply it's a cybernetic being due to the amount of wires on its body and inside it.
  • The Horrorboros is referenced during the Nessie VS Aliens VS Bigfoot Splatfest, in which Shiver mistakes one for the Loch Ness Monster after seeing it after a Grizzco shift. However, Big Man reports that a similar large sea beast has recently appeared in a lake near the Splatland seas, causing Shiver to remark she might've accidentally lied the Loch Ness Monster into existence.
  • Thanks to a translation error referring to Megalodontia as “Joe” in some official Nintendo posts, the community has often adopted Joe as an alternative name for the King Salmonid.
  • For some reason, the Megalodontia isn't referred to by plural pronouns by Mr. Grizz, which could mean it's one of a kind and, judging by its numerous appearances, could respawn.
    • However, this could also be a translation error thanks to the differences in Japanese and English grammar.
