Ajax, better known as Tartaglia or Childe, is an antagonist, boss fight and playable character in the 2020 action role-playing fantasy video game Genshin Impact. He appears as the main antagonist of "Chapter I" and a supporting character in "Chapter IV."

While first introduced as an ally to the Traveler in their search for the true murderer of Rex Lapis, he is quickly revealed to be the Eleventh Harbinger of the Fatui. He possesses a Hydro Vision and Electro Delusion and values strength on the battlefield above all else. He is also bound to his younger brother, Teucer, from whom he hides his connections with the Fatui to protect his innocence. After his battle with the Traveler in Liyue, Childe is later seen in Fontaine, where his sudden imprisonment invites the presence of The Knave.

He is voiced by Yu Dong in the Chinese version, Ryohei Kimura in the Japanese version (who also voiced Syura in Akame Ga Kill!, Shizuma Hoshigaki in Boruto: Naruto Next Generations, Albert de Blois in Gosick, Judar in Magi: The Labyrinth of Magi, and Kirito Kamui in Psycho-Pass 2) and Griffin Burns in the English version (who also voiced Julius in Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War, Shalnark in Hunter x Hunter (2011), and Vinegar Doppio in JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Golden Wind).

Official Description[]

1.1 Ver (1)[]

He is the youngest among the Harbingers, but one of the most dangerous among their number. That said, Childe doesn't seem to fit in well with the others. As a fighter first and foremost, he is quite at odds with this organization of deceit and trickery.
~ A New Star Approaches

1.1 Ver (2)[]

Warm and friendly one minute, ruthless killer the next... His shifting and unpredictable personality can leave those around him at a loss for words to describe him. But in rare, private moments, he dispenses with titles, casts off his armor and the layers of intrigue that come with it, and show his authentic self. His name is Tartaglia, and he is devoted to the thrill and the physical feel of battle. Like a velvet sheath that houses an ostensibly ornamental blade, his unpredictability puts people on edge.

"Childe" Tartaglia, Eleventh of the Fatui Harbingers. He draws power from the ominous Delusion he possesses and fights using martial arts that he learned in the land of darkness.
He is a pure warrior with an insatiable lust for battle. Each bloody conflict, each life-and-death struggle is a delightful trial for him. People say that the young Childe is famed throughout the land for his battle prowess. But he has never taken big talk of this kind of heart.
After all...

"You shall ever be the eye of the storm,"
"And the clashing of steel shall ever accompany you."
"The pitch-black memory of stepping into uttermost darkness,"
"Shall, at last, become the strength by which you will overturn this world."

~ Archives - Living Beings

Appearance[]

Tartaglia draws inspirations from Honkai Impact 3rd characters much like many other Genshin Impact characters. It's speculated he was inspired by the young KEVIN, also known as Kevin Kaslana.

He is a tall young man with a short, messy orange hair and dull blue eyes with fair skin.

Tartaglia wears a grey jacket with dark red and light grey details, grey pants, and black boots. His jacket is open on one side to reveal a belt with his hydro vision attached. For accessories he wears a red scarf along with a red Fatui mask pulled off to the left side of his head, and a beaded earring with a red crystal on his left ear.

Personality[]

Tartaglia is an ambitious individual who only has the desire to fight the strongest enemies and continually improving his own abilities. He enjoys fights with powerful individuals no matter the outcome. Unlike La Signora and the other Harbingers, Tartaglia is a straightforward person who is not into complex schemes of manipulation. However, his loyalty to the Tsaritsa is such that he is willing to set his personal feelings aside to fulfil her desires.

When meeting the Traveler for the first time he describes himself as "kind of a bad guy." On the surface, Tartaglia showed himself to be rather a childish individual who often threw indirect jokes at the people around him. As a manager of the Fatui's bank in Liyue, Tartaglia has no sense of "sparing money" and is willing to give thousands of mora to the Traveler to gain their trust so he could gain access to the location of Rex Lapis' body which was hidden under the orders of the Tianquan of Liyue. Tartaglia is also rather prideful of his own abilities.

Despite being willing to endanger thousands in the city of Liyue Harbor when he unleashed an ancient sea deity that was sealed by Rex Lapis thousand years ago, Tartaglia is later revealed to have a protective side to his own siblings and family and promised to give them a better world.

History[]

Tartaglia was born in the frozen lands of Snezhnaya as the elder brother of Anthon, Teucer and Tonia. His real name is Ajax. Back at a young age, he was described as fairly shy, but his personality changed drastically when he was 14. He got lost in a snowy forest and fell into the Abyss, a deep, bottomless crack in the earth. There, he trained with a swordswoman known as "Skirk", and escaped the Abyss after three months. However, only three days had passed in the real world.

Due to his newfound tendency to cause chaos in their village, his father was forced to conscript his beloved son into the Fatui, hoping the military service would hone his temper. He ended up watching full troops getting beaten up by a mere child. Tartaglia's strength impressed Pulcinella, one of the Fatui Harbingers, and thus he rose to his current position: the 11th Harbinger.

Desiring to serve Tsaritsa and seeing the suffering of the Snezhnaya people, he decided to help Tsaritsa to fulfill her vision of the future to the world. Awakening his Hydro Vision, Tartaglia became one of most fearsome of the Eleven Harbingers of the Fatui, granting him the privilege of being one of Tsaritsa's most powerful allies while also being the youngest member of the Harbingers.

At some point, Tartaglia was transferred to a bank division of the Fatui in Liyue to be in charge of funding for the city's finances. Using the bank's mora, Tartaglia would often send extremely massive and expensive toys to his siblings on Snezhnaya during their birthdays and daily sent letters to Tonia. It's unknown if it was Tartaglia who inspired Teucer to become a fan of Ruin Guards (seeing them as guardians of justice instead of war machines) by sending him toys-inspired by said killing machines, either way Tartaglia is the one who spoiled Teucer the most and would regret much later in the future for doing so.

During his time in Liyue, Tartaglia went to Yanshang Teahouse to collect the debt of the teahouse's owner for not paying his part in the contract with the Fatui. After threatening the owner and defeating his guards, Tartaglia accidentally found a Sigil of Permission inside of his teahouse and took it as his property to be used in one of his experiments to clone the Sigil (the same one given to the Traveler to give them permission to enter in the residence of the Adepti) in the future.

By the time that the Traveler had arrived on Liyue Harbor, Zhongli (also known as the mortal form of Rex Lapis the Geo Archon of Liyue) had beem approached by La Signora under the influence of Tsaritsa once said deity decided to just "retire" from his duty as the guardian of Liyue and leave the land to be taken care of by the mortals. Both Signora and Zhongli formed a contract to use Tartaglia and his Fatui division as their pawns and create an incident that would shake Liyue to the core by faking the death of their Archon.

Synopsis[]

Chapter I[]

Rex is purportedly "assassinated" during the titular Rite of Decension, and his vessel - known as the Exuvia - was taken away to the Golden House by the Liyue Qixing to hide the body from potential threats like the Fatui that were the first to receive the blame. When the Traveler tried to escape from the Rite fearing they would be arrested, Tartaglia saved the Traveler from the guards and brought them to a safe place where he could inform the Traveler he wanted to help them clean their name from suspicion. At the Northland Bank, Tartaglia gives the Traveler a copy of the Sigil of Permission he created to give them safe entrance to the adepti's residence and inform them what happened to Rex Lapis.

After the Traveler returns from their long journey, they find Tartaglia in Liyue Harbor to be informed that the Qixing decided to hide the body of Rex Lapis somewhere in Liyue where it could not be touched by external forces. Childe then promised he'd find someone to break the stalemate, so the Traveler must pay another visit to Northland Bank days later. Childe then introduces Zhongli, consultant to an organization known as Wangsheng and a trusted associate of the Fatui, to the Traveler in a restaurant and gives the Traveler an insane amount of mora to prepare the Rite of Parting. The traveler then accepted to help Zhongli organize the Rite of Parting in the hope of seeing the Geo Archon again. He would be much later contacted by the Traveler after Baizhu, the owner of Bubu Pharmacy offers to sell the Everlasting Incense for three million Mora, an amount the party can't possibly afford. They are forced to implore Tartaglia for aid, who agrees to help after getting a good laugh at their misery.

Days later, when the Traveler was already fully aware of Tartaglia's experiments and plans, they return to the city only to see Liyue Harbor in a tense atmosphere between the Fatui and Millelith. Just as things were coming to a head, the Traveler went to the Golden House to intercept Tartaglia as he finally found the location of Lapis' body inside of the Golden House. He then attempted to seize the Geo Gnosis after fighting the Traveler, only to find the Geo Gnosis was never at the Golden House to begin with and was removed from the body before he could arrive. After being defeated in Foul Legacy form, Tartaglia swiftly switched to his backup plan, attempting to force the Geo Archon to make an appearance by summoning an ancient ocean god from Archon Wars with Fatui-forged Sigils of Permission he cloned, unleashing great devastation over the Liyue Harbor.

To stop the Adepti and Liyue Qixing from defeating the ancient god, Tartaglia sent his forces to the Jade Chamber to stop their efforts but his forces were defeated by the combined strength of all adepti. The ancient god was then subdued once again following a fierce battle and much sacrifice, ruining Tartaglia's original plan. When the battle was over with the defeat of Fatui and the ancient god unleashed by Childe to destroy Liyue and lure the Geo Archon to him, Signora revealed her plan to Childe and the Traveler at the Northland Bank as Zhongli handed his own Geo Gnosis to Signora. From that point on, Childe's disdain for Signora only got worse to the point he refused to share the same boat with Signora when returning back to Snezhnaya.

Monoceros Caeli Chapter[]

Later, the Traveler found his brother Teucer by accident next to an abandoned ruin where a high number of Ruin Guardians had been spotted by the Millelith. They found out he had come from Snezhnaya, having travelled to Liyue inside of a ship of toys. When his brother was brought before him in Liyue Harbor, Tartaglia tried to not reveal his involvement with the Fatui, even humiliating himself in front of the Traveler and some thugs by calling himself the world's greatest toy salesman. When summoned by his servant to greet new Fatui recruits, he once again humiliated himself in front of the Fatui as to not let his brother see the true nature of his work as a Harbinger.

Eventually, Tartaglia decides to show his brother his favorite and "lovely" Mr. Cyclops (the nickname given by Teucer to the Ruin Guardians) toy inside of a ruin that was in fact a laboratory of a Harbinger before it was abandoned by the former for "losing interest" in the Ruin Guardians' research. Inside of the ruins, Teucer got himself in trouble little knowing what the Ruin Guardians were, forcing Tartaglia to use everything of his power to protect the childhood dream of his brother and even refused to show himself in front of Teucer to not show his weakened state following his Foul Legacy's transformation. Once all his family issues were solved, Tartaglia encountered the Traveler at the Fatui Bank and gave his farewell before inviting them to visit Snezhnaya and his house so they could meet his siblings. Tartaglia then left Liyue and returned to his homeland.

Labyrinth Warriors[]

Tartaglia is spotted once again in Inazuma. When the Traveler, Shiki Taishou and Xinyan headed into a mysterious Domain, Tartaglia met the Traveler once again and together they explored the domain known as the Mystic Onmyou Chamber. After delving deeper into the domain and fighting their way towards the end, he reveals his purpose to the Traveler; Tartaglia was sent to Inazuma to find one of his colleagues, Scaramouche aka the Balladeer, but failed in doing so due to the fact that the latter went rogue and cut ties with the Fatui.

Instead of hunting down the Electro Gnosis, Tartaglia used this as an opportunity to travel around Inazuma as he was also requested by Teucer to find an Onikabuto for him in Chinju Forest. While doing so, he saw a child heading straight to the monsters and he quickly took them all out (without using his Delusion nor Foul Legacy).

A Winter Night's Lazzo[]

Tartaglia is present at a Fatui Harbinger meeting for La Signora's funeral after her death at the hands of the Raiden Shogun. He criticizes Arlecchino's hostility towards the other Harbingers, given the mood of the event, but heeds Pierro's authority.

Chapter IV[]

Later, Childe is spotted in the Court of Fontaine, which he has arrived to on behalf of the Northland Bank. Bored by the Nation of Hydro, he is happy to see the Traveler and Paimon, hoping that they will bring excitement to his stay. After dealing with a Fontainian debtor, Childe expresses the bad mood he's been in as of late as his Hydro vision briefly loses its luster. He tells the Traveler about his time in the Abyss and training with Skirk, and how his combat experience would help him against "it", which Childe interprets to be a giant whale that he had dreamed about. He then entrusts his Hydro vision to the Traveler.

By circumstance, Childe finds himself as a suspect in Fontaine's serial disappearance case. He accepts the charge in hopes of honestly fighting Champion Duelists, especially Clorinde. Navia and the Traveler take up Childe's defense and ultimately reveal the true culprit, Marcel. However, though the entire case had been resolved, the Oratrice Mecanique d'Analyse Cardinale still finds Childe guilty, to which he was to be arrested and brought to the Fortress of Meropide. Childe fights back against the Gardemeks, and, though he disagrees with the Oratrice's ruling, Neuvillette intervenes and easily defeats the Delusion-powered Childe.

Because of political pressure from Snezhnaya and The Knave, Neuvillette requests that the Traveler investigate the condition of Childe in the Fortress of Meropide. Arlecchino does the same, sending Lyney, Lynette, and Freminet undercover to learn about Childe's whereabouts. The two parties eventually collaborate, and discover Childe's influence across the Fortress, from his combat prowess in the Pankration Ring and escape into the Fortress's waters. However, thanks to memories brought by Childe's vision, the Traveler is able to see that Childe's escape into the nearby waters was met with Primordial Seawater and The All-Devouring Narwhal.

Later, the Narwhal arrives at the Opera Epiclese, as Neuvillette fights back against it. To protect Fontainian citizens, Childe arises in his Foul Legacy form to assist Neuvillette, and after the Narwhal is repelled, Childe falls weakly back into the Abyss, having repelled the beast for days. After defeating the Narwhal, its form is collected by Skirk, who casts both it and Childe back into the Abyss.

Power and Abilities[]

Despite his appearance, Tartaglia by no means should be underestimated and was proven to be one of the strongest enemies the Traveler ever faced in their journey until the end of their stay in Liyue. His Foul Legacy transformation especially is extremely dangerous, allowing him to fight against the All-Devouring Narwhal alone for days. He was even able to scratch the Dragon Neuvillette while in the midst of transforming.

  • Weapons: In the game, his main weapons are bows, but his elemental skill has him creating 2 swords out of water. This gives him alternative melee moves with Hydro effects, allowing him fight in close combat unlike other archer characters. However, lore-wise Tartaglia is the least adept with a bow, and is only practicing with it to improve.
  • Hydro Vision: In his boss fight, Tartaglia was shown to be one of deadliest hydro-type characters; being able to shoot powerful arrow shots from his bow (despite being his worst weapon) that easily pierce through the player's body and can summon water whales from the ground, causing great amount of damage (one that can insta-kill any character if said player in inside of its range). However, in Fontaine, Tartaglia lost control over his Hydro Vision. He would give his Vision to the Traveler for safekeeping until later.
  • Electro Delusion: While using his Electro Delusion, Tartaglia possesses enhanced reflexes and supernatural speed. He uses weapons made of electro which usually take the form of two swords he can put together to create a spear.
  • Riptide: Upon landing a hit on an opponent, Tartaglia can mark them with the riptide effect. This mark resembles the Fatui insignia and carries various special effects. When created with his Vision, it creates small explosions that damage enemies. When created with his Delusion however, it allows Tartaglia to home in on enemies.
  • Foul Legacy: Tartaglia possesses a transformation that incorporates the powers of both his Hydro Vision and his Election Delusion, allowing him to use both his Hydro and Electro powers for a short period of time. In this form, Tartaglia loses his humanity and suffers radical physical changes. However, keeping this form for too long leaves his body too weak to even walk. In this form, Tartaglia receives near god-like status and surpass the limits of mortals. This ability comes from the Abyss, trained in him by his master Skirk.

~ Childe ambushing the Traveler in the Golden House.

If you make a mistake, you apologize. If you give someone a dream, you defend it to the end. That is what family is all about, isn't it?

Trivia[]

  • In appearance, Tartaglia was loosely inspired by Kevin Kaslana from Honkai Impact 3rd when he was younger (and whom is currently the leader of the maleficent World Serpent) before the arrival of Herrscher of the End and the destruction of the Previous Era.
  • Like the other Harbinger members, Tartaglia's name was derived from the the Italian commedia dell'arte. In the show, Tartaglia is a stock character that has multiple roles depending on the story's plot. The character is notable for his unique farsightedness and stutter.
  • Tartaglia is the youngest of the 11 Harbingers but is also considered to be one of its deadliest members.
  • His constellation is called Monoceros Caeli. In Latin it means "Celestial Narwhal." The narwhal, or narwhale, is a medium-sized toothed whale that possesses a large "tusk" made of a large protruding canine tooth. During his boss fight, he summons a giant hydro narwhal to drop on the player.
  • Childe's special dish is called "A Prize Catch."
  • While working with the Fatui, Childe adopts the false role of a "toy salesman" when around his brother Teucer as to hide his true role as a Harbinger.
  • Tartaglia became a playable character following the release of Version 1.1 of Genshin Impact, being a 5-star bow user.
  • Childe is the first boss (weekly or otherwise) to be made as a playable character, the second being Raiden Shogun.
