We're Team Fortress, and you're dead!
~ Miss Pauling, The Naked and The Dead.

The Team Fortress 2 Mercenaries, also known as the Teufort Nine by the public and Team Fortress by Miss Pauling, are the playable characters in the Valve game Team Fortress 2, and they are a protagonist faction in the main storyline of the TF2 comic series.

History[]

The TF2 Mercenaries were hired in the summer of 1968 to fight in the Gravel Wars by both Redmond Mann and Blutarch Mann. Each of the mercenaries are grouped into three different classes; Offense, Defense, and Support. The mercenaries that are Offense classes consists of the Scout, Soldier, and the Pyro, while the Demoman, Heavy, and the Engineer are Defense classes. As for the three remaining mercenaries, the Sniper, Medic and the Spy, are support classes.

Expiration Date[]

In Expiration Date, the RED Team returned to their base after taking a breath case, only for both the Medic and the Engineer to reveal a discovery that after bread has been teleported, it has tumors on the inside. Because of this, and also believing that they all had tumors, the team believed that they only had three days to live until death, according to Medic, so the Spy, deciding to collect a bucket list with an actual bucket, entrusting the Scout to collect all of the mercenaries' dying wishes, only to notice that the latter had ruined it, since the bucket is filled with drawings Scout had drawn, forcing the Spy to dismiss the whole thing, only to later give Soldier the bucket.

Later, Scout went to the Spy's smoking room to apologize and he admits that he does have a final wish; which is going on a date with Miss Pauling, the Administrator's assistant. Though the Scout stated that he himself is good he soon realized that Spy is more good with girls. As a result, the latter spent the rest of what was thought to be the last days of their life to train the Scout in etiquette classes as well as helping him learn how to behave appropriately around a lady. In the aftermath, Spy brands the Scout failure, though the latter showed some progress, causing the Scout to decide to do it on his own. With only two hours left, and taking matters into his own hands, he pressed a button that alarms Miss Pauling that the briefcase is stolen.

After she arrived, she discovered through a security camera that it is still secured, causing her to get angry at the Scout for his deception. As the latter tried to talk to her, Spy, Demoman, and Soldier were spectating in another room of the base and Spy became surprised that the Scout is doing really well, showing that all the training had payed off. Just then, both the Medic and the Engineer arrived with news that they were not suffering from tumors at all and it was just bread going through a mutation when being teleported. As discovered through an experimentation the "tumors" in the bread are merely a self-aware birthmark that only thrives in pure wheat.

Though Engineer assures that everything is fine as long as no one teleports anymore bread, the Soldier reveals that he has been teleporting bread for the past three days, to the horror of the Engineer, as it was the former's dying wish to do so, and the Medic angrily confronts him over his actions. Meanwhile, Miss Pauling is upset at Scout for wasting her day of vacation, which she gets a year, and turns to leave. When the Scout tries to get her to stay, he opens a door only to find a Giant Bread Monster on the other side. They were able to escape from the creature, and the team began fighting the bread monster in an attempt to kill it, only for Miss Pauling to destroy it with a bomb. The Soldier then told Scout that they were not suffering from tumors and the latter tries to go on another with Miss Pauling, only for her decline, as her day of vacation had already been wasted, though she gives the Scout the offer to come along with her at work, though he declines the tasks Pauling listed.

Mann vs. Machine[]

After Gray Mann killed his brothers in 1971, he proceeded to take control of their respective companies before mass-producing and unleashing an army of robots to destroy international Mann Co. facilities worldwide. In A Fate Worse Than Chess, Saxton Hale calls the RED and BLU mercenaries via video call, telling them that with Redmond and Blutarch dead, the Gravel War is over and they no longer have jobs. However, as Saxton Hale is too busy wrestling a yeti to deal with the robot threat, he immediately rehires the mercenaries to defend the Mann Co. facilities from Gray's robot army.

For an entire year until 1972, the TF2 Mercenaries, under the leadership of Miss Pauling, were able to successfully defend the facilities from the robots all over the world. However, as Gray Mann refuses to give up, the ensuing robot war ended up becoming a prolonged conflict. To try to turn the tide, Gray produces a robotic version of the Engineer, in which it is more intelligent than its human counterpart, though this creation proved to be ineffective in changing the tide of the war, following the assault on Mann Co. Headquarters at Bigrock.

Losing their jobs[]

In Ring of Fired, after Gray Mann was able to successfully take over Mann. Co after he cleverly made Saxton Hale fight his daughter Olivia Mann, which Saxton refused, the TF2 mercenaries were immediately fired and they all scattered, going their separate ways in the process, however, Scout and Spy were arrested before they could even escape the Badlands. Meanwhile, the Soldier, as he is homeless, began living in a box and later gives guide tours to homes of the stars, the Pyro became the head of a successful engineering company, Demoman returned to his mansion where he went back to living with his strict mother, the Heavy returned to his family home in Siberia while the Sniper returned to his adopted parents' house in Australia, where he had gone bush.

As for Medic, he became unreachable, due to having an important position, while the Engineer's whereabouts are unknown to the rest of the team.

Reuniting the team[]

Six months later, during the events of the aforementioned comic, A Cold Day in Hell, and Blood in the Water, nearly all of the mercenaries were found and reunited. However, only the Engineer is still missing while the Medic is revealed to be working for the Team Fortress Classic Mercenaries, who used to work for Redmond and Blutarch Mann in the 1930s before they were replaced by the TF2 Mercenaries themselves.

TF2 vs. TFC[]

In the webcomic Old Wounds, some members of the team, along with Miss Pauling and Zhanna, one of TF2 Heavy's sisters, were captured by the TFC Mercenaries and the TF2 Medic, though the TF2 Sniper was killed before that. In Gray Gravel Co.'s Australian island base, while Miss Pauling and the rest where held in a cell, the TF2 Soldier became the subject of interrogation and poor torture at the hands of the TFC Pyro, so that her team could gain information on the Administrator's whereabouts, as she had taken the entire cache of Mann Co.'s Australium. When he accidentally revealed that only Miss Pauling knows on where her boss is, the TFC Pyro (real name: Beatrice) began torturing the TF2 Soldier to death, as he is not of use anymore, only for Zhanna to break free (at the cost of one of her hands) and killed the TFC Pyro before she and the TF2 Soldier brought the dying Gray Mann, who was betrayed by the TFC Heavy, with them to Miss Pauling.

Reaching the cell where Pauling and the captured TF2 mercenaries are in, the TFC Spy was killed by the TF2 Soldier, who snaps his neck through a single punch to the head. The TFC Demoman proceeded to grab Miss Pauling and threatens to kill her if Zhanna puts her shotgun down. The latter obliges but she suddenly punches Miss Pauling with enough force to make her hit the TFC Demoman in the head, which causes him to fall backgrounds, allowing the TF2 Spy to choke him to death. Meanwhile, in the base's laboratory, the TF2 Medic was able to revive the TF2 Sniper, who was infuriated that his old teammate is working for the TFC Mercenaries, though the TF2 Medic would explain his reasons.

As Miss Pauling, Zhanna, and the team were trying to escape, the TFC Heavy, via video feed, sent leech robots after them, as revenge for them killing his friends. Due to being designed to suck in Australian from Australians, which that includes blood, the robots sucked in the blood of Miss Pauling, Zhanna, TF2 Pyro, Spy, and Soldier. When they sucked in TF2 Demoman's blood, however, the leech robots ended up getting alcohol poisoning, as the latter's blood has high contents of alcohol. As a result of this, this weakens and poisons them, allowing the TF2 Demoman to fight them off, destroying most of them in the process. In The Naked and the Dead, the TF2 Medic, who had rejoined his old team after being abused by the TFC Heavy, began gathering and collecting all the blood he can with his dirty underwear, while also being helped by Zhanna, and then placed all them back in the bodies of his teammates, before TF2 Scout and Heavy reunites with Miss. Pauling, who had since recovered.

Later, while the team was busy fighting off large hordes of robots together with Saxton Hale and his girlfriend Hellen, the TFC Sniper (real name: Virgil) attempted to snipe the TF2 Heavy only to be interrupted by the TFC Engineer. However, the latter is actually the TF2 Spy in disguise, as he, together with the TF2 Sniper, attempted to get the TFC Sniper to fall right into their trap. This unfortunately backfired, however, as the TFC Sniper saw through the deception, due to having mechanical eyes, and wounds the TF2 Spy in the leg, forcing the TF2 Sniper to flee. When the TF2 Spy noticed his teammate, who is now completely naked and climbing around the base's interior, he proceeded to distract the TFC Sniper long enough for the TF2 Sniper to sneak through a window and take the former's sniper rifle, which he uses to kill the TFC Sniper. Meanwhile, after the TF2 Medic stitches the TF2 Demoman's wounded leg and the latter had left, the TFC Heavy tries to force him into stitching Gray Mann's life extender machine onto his body, but the TF2 Medic instead attacks him with his ubersaw. Unfortunately, it proved to be ineffective towards the TFC Heavy, who proceeded to pounce on the TF2 Medic.

Before he could do anything to him, TF2 Heavy points his minigun at him and orders him to not hurt his friend. Surprised by this, the TFC Heavy states that he has been waiting for this. Though he appears to have surrendered, Heavy offers him his minigun so that he could have a fair fight, the TFC Heavy soon took out a pistol and uses it to kill the TF2 Medic with two shots to the chest. He then mockingly states to the Heavy, who was left speechless, that what he did was exactly what he wants and that if he wants a fair fight he got one. His shock turning to rage, the TF2 Heavy began to ferociously beat him.

In a weapons storage room, the TFC Scout (real name: Greg) and the TFC Soldier (real name: Ross) were discussing present events with each other until they discovered that they themselves are coated in gasoline before the TF2 Pyro reveals himself. The latter then proceeded to blow up the entire room, causing a big explosion that killed both the TFC Scout and Soldier. As he was being ferociously beaten by the TF2 Heavy, the TFC Heavy tries to save himself by giving the former the offer of living for eternity with him, but the TF2 Heavy rejects this by head butting the TFC Heavy before breaking his back, reminding him that he killed his friend (TF2 Medic) and states his refusal of wanting eternal life.

When the Tf2 Heavy turned his back, the TFC Heavy proceeded to empower himself with Australium via Gray Mann's life extender machine, which he embedded in his torso. He began to sadistically beat up the Tf2 Heavy until the TF2 Medic, who has been revived after having outwitted the The Devil, began distracting him, allowing the TF2 Heavy to rip the life extender machine from the TFC Heavy, causing him to rapidly start aging leaving him frail and close to death. He eventually dies of old age, ending the threat the TFC mercenaries posed once and for all.

Members[]

  • Scout - Real name: Jeremy. Born in Boston, Massachusetts, USA, he is the youngest child in his family and is the fastest mercenary on the team. His father is implied to be the Spy. The Scout is a scrapper, baseball fan, and street runner who wields a scattergun, a pistol, and an aluminum bat as his main arsenal. When he drinks Bonk! Atomic Punch, this makes him invulnerable to attacks for 8 seconds while he is granted the ability to deal mini-crits if he drinks Crit-a-Cola, though it also lasts for 8 seconds like the Bonk! Atomic Punch.
  • Soldier - Real name: Unknown, but is referred to as "Mister Jane Doe". Hailing from Midwest, USA, he is a jingoistic patriot and self-styled military man. He is also the arch-nemesis and former roommate of the wizard Merasmus. In battle, the Soldier is one of the strongest mercenaries on the team and has the second highest health. He is capable of rocket-jumping, where he launches a rocket at his feet and launch himself skyward, though this can damage his health. His arsenal consist of a rocket launcher, shotgun, and a folding shovel.
  • Pyro - Real name: Unknown. An enigmatic pyromaniac whose origins are a complete mystery, it has a strong love for fire and likes to burn anything it can find. The Pyro wears a gas mask that muffles its voice as well as hide its face, making its true identity and gender unknown. The Pyro's main weapons consist of the flamethrower, shotgun, and a fireaxe. The Pyro is known to be insane, erratic, and delusional as to its eyes, they are in a fantasy and utopian world known as Pyroland, where they appear to have fun with cherubim versions of their enemies while at the same time are blind to reality as well as the horrific killings and destruction they had committed.
  • Demoman - Real name: Tavish Finnegan Degroot. A black demolition expert and alcohol addict from Ullapool, Scotland, he lost his left eye at the age of seven after he came across the Bombinomicon, Merasmus' talking book of dark knowledge, but this didn't stop the Demoman from becoming a mercenary much later in his adulthood. His main arsenal consists of the grenade launcher, the stickybomb launcher, and a bottle. He is also a profession in the ways of melee combat and owns a haunted claymore called the Eyelander, which was given to him by Miss Pauling. With the sword, the Demoman can become stronger in health and strength, which can be shown when his right eye glows, whenever he decapitates enough heads.
  • Heavy - Real name: Misha/Mikhail. Hailing from the Dzhugdzhur Mountains of the Soviet Union and having an obsession with firepower, the Heavy is the tallest, strongest and most dangerous mercenary on his team and has the highest health than any of his teammates. However, he is also the slowest mercenary, which makes him vulnerable to substantial amounts of damage. He wields a minigun (which he refers to as "Sasha") and a shotgun as his weapons for ranged combat. For melee combat, he would use his own fists, though he can also wield melee weapons. The Heavy is well-known for healing himself or receiving the ability to deal mini-crits by eating a random type of food item from his arsenal, which includes the Sandvich, Dalokoh's Bar, Fishcake, the Buffalo Steak Sandvich, Robo-Sandvich, and the Second Banana.
  • Engineer - Real name: Dell Conagher. A soft-spoken Texan, inventor, engineer, and intellectual from Bee Cave, Texas, USA, the Engineer is the shortest but most intelligent mercenary, who constructs buildings that could provide support to his team. The buildings/gadgets he can construct consists of the Sentry Gun, the Dispenser, and Teleporters. The Engineer's weapons in his arsenal are the shotgun, the pistol, and his wrench. In the TF2 comics series, after he was fired by Gray Mann, he went to take care of the Administrator and extend her life through Australium so that she could live long enough to settle an 'old score'.
  • Medic - Real name: Dr Ludwig (First name: Unknown). Born in Stuttgart, Germany, and a doctor who lost his medical license, he helps his team by using his medigun to heal their wounds and injuries as well as restoring their health. He is also capable of Übercharging his teammates, making them invulnerable to attacks. While the Medic's medigun is capable of healing anyone, however, his weapons are not really good for combat as they consist of a syringe gun and a bonesaw. The reason for the Medic's ability to do harm is mainly due to having little regard for the Hippocratic Oath. In the TF2 comic series, after he was fired from his job, he went to work for the Team Fortress Classic Mercenaries. However, after being constantly abused by the TFC Heavy, the Medic sided with his old team again.
  • Sniper - Real name: Mr Mundy/Mun-Dee (Adoptive first name: Unknown). Hailing from the underwater-domed country of New Zealand and adopted and raised in the unforgiving outback of Australia, the Sniper is an outdoorsman and ocker assassin who snipes his targets from afar or in places where he is hardly seen. His weapons of choice are the sniper rifle, the SMG gun, and the kukri. Aside from the SMG gun, the Sniper's secondary weapon can also consist of Jarate, small jars filled with urine, which he throws at his targets, making them vulnerable to crits. In the TF2 comics, after he was accidentally launched in a rocket and crashed in Australia, he was found by his adoptive parents, Jonathan Mundy and his wife Ms. Mundy. In Blood in the Water, it is revealed that ever since he returned home, while he was busy cleaning up his house, he discovered that he himself is adopted, and eventually reunites with his birth parents, Bil-Bel and Lar-Nah, though this reunion proved to be short-lived.
  • Spy - Real name: Unknown. Originating from an indeterminate region in France, he is an operative and is one of the most mysterious mercenaries on the team as well as the most sneaky and cunning. His weapons consist of the revolver and the butterfly knife. The Spy has the ability to disguise himself into any class via his disguise kit as well as turn invisible through his cloaking watches. However, if he uses the Dead Ringer, this will allow him to fake his own death while leaving a decoy. With his knife, which is his melee weapon, the Spy can perform an instant kill by stabbing his enemies in the back. In dealing with Engineer buildings, he can disable them with his sapper. In the TF2 comic The Naked and the Dead, the Spy is implied to be the Scout's birth father, though he tricks the latter into believing that the late Welsh singer Tom Jones is really his father.
