No talking in the library!
~ Quiet Librarian's first and most famous quote.
I'm going to teach you a lesson just like I do to all loud children, my reading room is so peaceful and quiet - you're going to like it, just like all the others.
~ The Librarian threatening Jace.
Children who make noise in the library must be punished!
~ The Librarian's last words shortly before being destroyed.

The Quiet Librarian, originally known as Mercy MacGregor, is the titular antagonist of the Are You Afraid of the Dark episode, The Tale of The Quiet Librarian - she is one of several malevolent spirits in the series and is notable as a serial child-abductor and serial-killer, making her fairly dark even by the show's considerable heinous standards.

The Quiet Librarian is considered among the most evil of all the many monsters in the series, a trait she shares with Captain Jonas Cutter, Master Raymond, the Keeper, Peter Kirlan III and Margot.

Biography[]

Mercy MacGregor lived around 1895 and died in 1910, prior to her death she was the head librarian of an unnamed public library and had a reputation for being extremely strict. Unforgiving of nonsense or noise, she would kick out disruptive children or sent them into her "Quiet Room" as punishment.

After her death, however, Mercy changed into a malevolent and insane spirit that haunted the library with a new zeal, determined to enforce her "no noise" policy, but taking it to a terrifying new level. Armed with a magic containment box, she would capture people's voices and souls, trapping them inside her "Quiet Room" for eternity; she would do this to anyone (especially children) and had no care for how trivial a noise may be.

For some time, she would become less active as the library built around her main haunting spot, obscuring the door to her "Quiet Room". But, she would be awoken once more when a young boy came down to the basement to retrieve his bouncy ball and uncovered her door, allowing her to capture him and restart her reign of terror.

She would then capture an older girl and would add her to the growing list of souls condemned to the "Quiet Room".

Eventually, she would come across the two protagonists of the story (Laurie and Jace), who broke into the library at night to retrieve a notebook they had accidentally left while doing a history assignment.

She would capture both of the protagonist's voices and tried to imprison them in the "Quiet Room," but was defeated when Laurie and Jace used a sound-effects toy to overload the evil spirit, unable to contain all the random sounds it produced, this caused her magic box to break and all the trapped souls were set free.

Mercy would be reduced to ash, completely destroyed, with the library returning to peace and her surviving victims finally free from her wrath.
