Ambassador Laquatus is a blue aligned merfolk from Magic: the Gathering. He is from the plane of Dominaria and played a major role in the Odyssey Block.
History[]
Despite being an Otarian or Berbous merfolk, Laquatus realized he could gain more power and influence if he worked for the Cephalids( a race of octopus people) instead of his own kind. In order to gain their trust, he planned to cripple the Berbous empire during its rebirthing ceremony. Every 30 year time period, the eggs the merfolk laid were collected and at the end of the period, they would sacrifice themselves as energy to hatch the eggs. During this ceremony, Laquatus distracted the emperor while the Cephalids replaced the merfolk eggs with their own. Once the ceremony commenced, every merfolk besides the emperor killed themselves trying to hatch the eggs and crippled the empire in the process. The Cephalids became the rulers of the ocean and Laquatus became their ambassador as a reward. This was also due to his ability to change his tail fin into a pair of legs. Laquatus hated his position and plotted to join the Imperial court. To the Cephalids, Laquatus was a loyal subject who would do what he was told. On the surface, he made many connections with people and the crime syndicate known as The Cabal to aid in his quest for power. It also helped that he is adept in mind manipulation magic. He can hypnotize victims and erase or implant false memories in those he encounters. An Aven Kirtar and some Cabal agents were manipulated into trusting Laquatus and they worked together to kill a dragon. He also hired an amphibian beast named Turg and a nightmare named Burke who was created by Chainer to accompany him.
During this block, the major characters were searching for an orb known as the Mirari, an orb that grants wishes but has the ability to drive those who use it insane and can lead to the user's downfall. Laquatus was no exception. He planned on using it to destroy the Cabal and rule the surface. Unfortunately, his plans would fail when he trailed the barbarian Kamahl who was in possession of the Mirari. Kamahl discovered Laquatus and the two fought. He was murdered when Kamahl stabbed him in the chest with his Mirari sword. After his death, the Mirari sword fused with Laquatus and he became a mutant zombie which Kamahl killed again.
