After all, we are the natural enemy of the Maverick Hunters, the X-Hunters.
~ The group's introduction in the Yoshihiro Iwamoto manga.

The X-Hunters, known as the Counters Hunters in Japan, are trio of three Mavericks and the main antagonists in Mega Man X2. They were hired by Sigma with the sole mission of disposing of X. Knowing that X was very powerful, they decided to deceive him, collecting the parts of Zero and offering them as their "prize" for X, in case he defeated them. They intended on reconstructing Zero, knowing his true nature (which they called "The Unification").

The X-Hunters[]

Violen[]

Violen is the strongest of the group, with a spiked ball attached to a chain on his back. He takes advantage of his size to fight. While Serges watch their operation to retrieve the parts of Zero, Violen and Agile keep an eye on X, as he goes to a factory tracking the last of Sigma's followers. Knowing that X was very powerful, they send eight Mavericks to hold him off while they continue their operations. After X defeats some of the Mavericks, Serges decides it's time for them to confront Mega Man X. They send a message to Maverick Hunter's HQ, challenging him to fight them in exchange for Zero's parts. X finds Violen during one of his missions, defeating him and retrieving one of Zero's parts. They retreat to a secret base on an island, but X manages to locate it after defeating all of their mavericks. X finds Violen in a room with blocks that change whenever Violen wills it, and Violen attacks X by viciously slamming his spiked ball around the room. However, Violen's efforts are futile, and he is ultimately killed by X, who proceeds to find where Serges and Agile make their lairs. Violen is fat with pig-like facial features, wearing a red suit of armour with a blue spiked collar à la Bowser, and having grey braided ponytail on whose end a spiky ball that serves as his main weapon lies. On his feet are boots that have tips that point upward.

Serges[]

Also known as Sagesse in the Japanese version, Serges is the most intelligent of the group. He uses various machines and devices for fighting, to compensate for his lack of power. Serges watch their operation to retrieve the parts of Zero, as the other two keep an eye on X, as he goes to a factory tracking the last of Sigma's followers. Knowing that X was very powerful, they send eight Mavericks to hold him off while they continue their operations. After X defeats some of the Mavericks, Serges decides that they have to intervene. They send a message to Maverick Hunter's HQ, challenging him to fight them in exchange for Zero's parts. X finds Serges during one of his missions, defeating him and retrieving one of Zero's parts. They retreat to a secret base on an island, but X manages to locate it after defeating all of their mavericks. After destroying Violen, X finds Serges, who attacks X on a large machine. After the machine is destroyed, Serges tries to attack him from his seat but is ultimately killed by X who proceeds to head deeper into the base where Agile lurks. Serges is hunchbacked with a moustache, beard, and five hair spikes, and asymmetrical red eyes. His outfit consists of a blue suit of armour and grey trousers underneath and blue boots with grey upward-facing tips and a purple cape covering his body as well as a hat. His gloves are grey.

Agile[]

The fastest of the group, Agile is not just fast fast, but also talks very fast. He uses a sword to fight, also relying on his agility true to his name. While Serges watches their operation to retrieve the parts of Zero, Violen and Agile keep an eye on X, as he goes to a factory tracking the last of Sigma's followers. Knowing that X was very powerful, they send eight Mavericks to hold him off while they continue their operations. After X defeats some of the Mavericks, Serges decides it's up to them to check Mega Man X. They send a message to Maverick Hunter's HQ, challenging him to fight them in exchange for Zero's parts. X finds Agile during one of his missions, defeating him and retrieving one of Zero's parts. They retreat to a secret base on an island, but X manages to locate it after defeating all of their Mavericks. After defeating Violen and Serges, X finds Agile, who attacks X on a flying saucer. X destroys the saucer, which ultimately kills Agile and put an ends to the X Hunters. Agile wears a purple coat and a helmet. His boots have tips that point upwards. His saucer has a monitor which his face appears on and decorations resembling his shoulder pads.

Relationship between Wily and Serges[]

There is a lot of speculation of Serges being just a vessel for Dr Wily, while in the English release of X2 there arent any clues, in the Japanese release however, there are dialogues that make support the theory, the first is when the first met each other in a radio conversation, Serges almost calls X by the name of his predecesor, Rockman (Megaman's japanese name), which is strange as in X's time, Rock Man and the robots of the original series have completely dissapeared and are all bur forgotten, so that just a random robot knows about his existance is strange.

When Serges meets his demise in the Japanese version, the translation of Serges' dialogue is the following Being defeated by the robotic memento of Light yet again... Such regret...", this is even stranger as the existence of Dr Light is only known to X, Zero and Dr Cain, nobody else in the world of Mega Man X knew about Dr Light or any of the robots he ever made, and this yet again part is even more supportive of the theory.

Other evidence supported by later games, is the resurrection of Zero in X2, in X6 is revealed that the DNA of Zero is impossible to fully analize, even by top scientists like Gate, however in X2 Zero not only is resurrected, but upgraded too, and the only character that can do that is his own creator.

However, a detractor of the theory that Serges is Wily is that X is three-laws compliant (even though he is more advanced than the Robot Masters of Doctor Light's time), and thus would never harm a human, yet he has no compunctions about bringing Serges' demise. Sigma also mentions in Mega Man X5 that his partner who joined his side at that moment is an old man, which could be Wily, and Serges cannot be this man due to having worked by Sigma's side in X2.

Keiji Inafune has also said regarding the subject that it is up to the player's imagination to determine whether Serges and Wily are the same person or not.

Trivia[]

  • The X-Hunters can be considered foils to the Maverick Hunters, who were designed to hunt Mavericks.
  • After his second defeat in the game's Japanese copies, Agile refers to Sigma by name, thus spoiling the latter's role in the game. In English, Agile's post-defeat line has Sigma's name edited out and replaced with "Master!" so Sigma can have his role hidden.

Etymology[]

  • Agile earned his name from agile, which comes from the Latin adjective agilis ("agile", "nimble").
  • Violen earned his name from violent, which comes from the Latin violentus ("vehement", "boisterous", "violent", "forcible", "impetuous"), ultimately from Latin vīs ("strength", "power").
  • Serges may have earned his name from the Latin sapentia (wisdom), with the warping of A to ER in Serges' name coming from sergeant.
