Sea Legs had a sister. She was my loyal pet, my steed, and my ship for 40 years. And I loved that crab. Out in the deep, she could take sea leviathans and krakens with her own two claws. Well, Domina didn't like that. Said the deep sea was under her protection. But that ain't freedom. So, I challenged her domain, and she took everything from me. She let me live, but she told me that if she ever saw me more than a mile offshore, she'd drown me. ME, the fearsome Captain Finnegrin. Ships turn and flee at the sight of MY flag. Any sailor who docks at Scumport pays their due! But if I cross the great Domina Profundis, she'll make flotsam of everything I've built. So long as she's out there I'm never truly free.
~ Finnegrin explaining to Callum his reason for wanting to kill Domina Profundis.
Hurts, don't it? That's your blood freezing in your veins. Now you see what keeps everyone on my ship in line. The chains? Well, they're really just for show.
~ Finnegrin revealing his ability to freeze other people's blood after using it to subdue Rayla, while also admitting that he's used it to control his crew.

Finnegrin, also known as the Dark Eyed Sailor, is a supporting antagonist of the Netflix fantasy animated series The Dragon Prince.

The former master of Deadwood, he was a the unofficial ruler of the Xadia port town of Scumport, which is effectively the center of the criminal underworld of Xadia. Having a strong hatred of Domina Profundis, the Archdragon of the Ocean, he has the ambition of killing her one day so he can terrorize and poach the life of the deep sea unchallenged.

He was voiced by Tariq Leslie.

Biography[]

Backstory[]

In the past, Finnegrin was captain of a giant hermit crab called Shelley, who he used as his ship. With Shelley at his command, Finnegrin hunted and killed many sea creatures, mainly Leviathans and Krakens, for about 40 years. At some point his poaching of ocean creatures brought him into the crosshairs of Domina Profundis, the archdragon of the Ocean, who vowed to protect the life of the deep sea.

In his arrogance, Finnegrin challenged Domina for control of the Ocean, a battle he inevitably lost, resulting in the death of Shelley and implicitly his crew at the time. Domina allowed Finnegrin to live but threatened him with death should he dare threaten her domain again.

Finnegrin thus restricted his business to the inland waters of Xadia and replaced Shelley with her sibling Sea Legs. Nevertheless, Finnegrin felt slighted by Domina's defiance as well as the destruction of his property, making it his life's goal to find a way to kill Domina Profundis so that he could enforce his rule over the sea unchallenged.

At some point in his life, Finnegrin went to Scumport and gained so much fear that he became the one that allowed people to enter or leave Scumport. He would also hire a being named Elmer, which he mockingly called Deadwood. He would later have a crew that consisted of people he put into submission by using Veinus Frigardis.

Chasing Shadows[]

Finnegrin makes a cameo appearance in chapter 2 of the short story. He's seen by Rayla observing the fighting pits. When a sunfire elf named Darys challenges Finnegrin following his second victory, he sends Deadwood to fight in his place. When Deadwood easily beats Darys to a pulp, Finnegrin nodded at Deadwood to stop once Darys forfeited.

Season 5[]

Finnegrin makes his first official appearance in "Bait and Switch." He meets with Ezran, who tries to negotiate for passage to the Sea of the Castout. Uninterested in the young king's crown, he instead tries to convince him to give up his glowtoad Bait, which Ezran refuses. He proceeds to show Ezran the three baby glowtoads he has in his possession, much to Ezran's horror.

Not wanting to leave the babies in Finnagrins possession, Ezran has Soren pose as a rich sailor to lure Finnagrin out of his tower into town, where Callum and Villads stage a fight that causes a barrel of smokebees to explode, allowing Rayla to steal the keys to his office. By the time he realizes the ruse and gets back into the room, Ezran and Azymondias had already stolen the glowtoads and escaped with the others to Villads' ship. Enraged, Finnegrin sails after Team Zym onboard Sealegs to exact his revenge.

Team Zym quickly realize that Finegrin was after them, but they fail to escape from Sea Legs, and are eventually captured by Finnegrin. When they get holded on Finnegrin's ship, he flips a coin to decide their fate, and end in tails, so he orders them to be locked up with the exception of Callum, who he told Deadwood to bring him to his ship's quarters, as he had special plans for him.

He would later make a deal with Nyx, whom he freed after Nyx told him that they were after a treasure in the Sea of the Castout. At the ship's quarters, Finnegrin offers Callum his freedom in exchange for a dark magic spell, but Callum refused, so Finnegrin orders Deadwood to repeatedly eletrocute Callum with sea anemones. After this, Finnegrin informs Callum about how he plans to use the dark magic spell Viren used to kill Avizandum in order to kill Domina Profundis.

After Callum refused and questioned his reasons for wanting Domina dead, Finnegrin explains his past with Domina to Callum, and says that he will only be free with Domina's death. Callum, however, laughs at what Finnegrin is saying, and tells him that what he truly wants is to control the entire ocean. Angered by this, Callum brings him to the deck of the ship, where his friends are.

He then tries to force Callum to choose which of his friends would have their hand cut off as payback for them stealing their infant glow toads. Callum refused to do it, Finnegrin informs he that if he didn't choose, h would cut a hand from all of them. After all of Callum's friends offered to have their hands cut off to save the others, Finnegrin decided to make him choose between using dark magic or his friends having their hands cut off.

Before Callum used dark magic, however, Rayla was able to uncuff herself and knocked Deadwood down before grabbing two spears and trying to attack Finnegrin. However, Finnegrin used a spell that painfully started freezing Rayla's blood, which caused her to fall to the ground. Finnegrin then tells them that this is how he keeps his crew in control, and that the chains he uses are "just for show".

Angered by this, Callum punches him in the nose, which makes Finnegrin order Deadwood to knock Callum unconscious. Back at Finnegrin's quarters, he locks Bait in a cage, and reveals he's going to use Bait to attract a sea leviathan that he would use to have Rayla eaten. Callum then desperately tried to stop him from doing so by telling him the ingredients of the dark magic spell that would make him capable of killing Domina Profundis.

Finnegrin, however, refused to change his mind and taunts Callum that the deal he made was no longer on the table. Before Rayla was eaten by the sea leviathan, however, Callum decided to use dark magic to free himself from his chains and rescue Rayla. Callum then tries to attack Finnegrin, but he is stopped by Finnegrin who tries to use Veinus Frigardis on Callum.

However, Callum is able to learn the Sea Arcanum, which made Finnegrin incapable of using his spell on Callum. Finnegrin then decides to have Deadwood choke Callum to death, but after Soren tries to convince Deadwood to not obey Finnegrin, the latter decided to order Deadwood to punch Soren. Soren, however, refused to give up in reasoning with Deadwood, and when he was about to be killed, Deadwood understood that he had enough of Finnegrin's abuse and stopped himself from killing Soren.

Finnegrin then asked why Deadwood stopped, with him responding Finnegrin that Deadwood was not his name. He then grabs Finnegrin and dangles Finnegrin above the sea leviathan. Finnegrin then tries to stab Deadwood's hand to no avail, with the latter saying that his name is Elmer before throwing Finnegrin to the sea leviathan's mouth, killing him.

Personality[]

Listen to yourself. You think you want freedom, but you're just trying to control the entire ocean.
~ Callum to Finnegrin about the latter's intentions.

Finnegrin is an arrogant and power-hungry pirate that seeks control in almost everything including the sea. He is ruthless when it comes to his ambitions and is willing to make bargains with people no matter if they are a king or peasant. Despite his liking for hermit crabs like Shelley, it is obvious that he cares for nothing but his control over everything while he sees himself above them. This is shown literally when his office is in a tower of Scumport and watches anything that is happening around the island. Finnegrin is incredibly arrogant since he wants Callum to create a spell to kill Domina Profundis even though she had every reason to hate him as he tries spread his control over the sea. And he would kill a person for simple things like wasting his time or challenging him.

When he is first introduce he comes off as friendly and affable until later it was revealed to be a facade to lower peoples guard. He even had the audacity to ask for Bait to be cut in half during his bargaining with Ezran even though Bait is his pet. Besides his arrogance, Finnegrin is shown many times to be abusive both towards his enemies and those who work for him, specifically Deadwood. He constantly belittles his bodyguard saying that he has full control over him and even mocked him when Soren tells him to give Deadwood some dignity. In the end, Callum calls him out on his arrogance and says that he is afraid of what he can't control. His arrogance and deluded belief of control is what lead him to his demise.

Trivia[]

  • The name, Finnegrin, means "fair' or "fair-haired" in Irish. This is ironic because Finnegrin is not a fair individual and is in fact the opposite.
  • The spell, Veinus Frigardis, is the ability to freeze someone's blood. It is a reference to bloodbending from the Avatar franchise.
