“ | Yes your Evilness, I'm loading the last Putties now. (...) And the beauty is, if they don’t, we can always make more. Now into the Monster-Matic they go. Ten seconds should do it. | „ |
~ Finster creating the first Putty Patrollers and explaining the Monster-Matic's function. |
Finster was the white Scottish terrier-like alien scientist serving the Evil Space Aliens who created most of Rita Repulsa and Lord Zedd's monsters and a major antagonist in Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, a supporting antagonist in both Power Rangers Zeo and Power Rangers In Space, and a supporting character in Power Rangers: Soul of the Dragon.
He was voiced by the late Robert Axelrod who also voiced Lokar. the Goo Fish, Lord Zedd and the Two-Headed Parrot in Mighty Morphin Power Rangers as well as Mutantrum in Power Rangers Lost Galaxy. Outside of Power Rangers, he was best known as Wizardmon in Digimon Frontier.
Biography[]
Past[]
Finster's past and even his birth planet are unknown but he first emerged as a major threat when he joined the Evil Space Aliens and in the process came into conflict with Zordon of Eltar. At some point, he was assigned as a minion of Rita Repulsa and sent to fight the Eltarian on Earth. Despite being a powerful witch, Rita's ability to create monsters was limited so she relied on Finster creating monsters from clay sculptures using his Monster-Matic. In spite being a powerful witch and having a monster army, Rita and her forces were eventually defeated and sealed away in a dumpster.
Mighty Morphin Power Rangers[]
After 10,000 years of imprisonment, Finster and the rest of the Evil Space Aliens are freed by a pair of astronauts who find her dumpster on the Moon in 1993. Now free to take control of Earth, Rita re-establishes herself and her minions on the forgotten Moon Palace where she begins sending down monsters to attack the planet. However, she finds herself confronted by Zordon's champions; five super-powered teens known as the Power Rangers. Finster is primarily responsible for creating the monsters and Putty Patrollers that battle the Rangers but his role becomes redundant after Lord Zedd replaces Rita and uses his own magic to create monsters. With nothing better to do, Finster spends months just experimenting in his lab until late 1994 when Rita returns. Although shocked to see his mistress, Finster returns her to normal size, creates some clay that makes her younger and creates a love potion to brainwash Zedd. From then on, the majority of monsters are created by Finster with a few exceptions but all of these plans fail.
Power Rangers Zeo[]
Whilst the Evil Space Aliens are celebrating the destruction of the Command Center, the Moon Palace is attacked by the Machine Empire's Quadrafighters. With no form of air defence, they are forced to abandon the gutted Moon Palace and flee in Serpentera to the M-51 Galaxy much to Zedd's misery.
Much later however, they return after the defeat of Somnibot as the Machine Empire have become an intergalactic laughing stock for failing to defeat the Zeo Rangers. Reclaiming Rito and Goldar and operating out of an RV, Rita and Zedd use a series of plots to prevent the robots from emerging the victors. At one point, Finster makes a new wand for Rita which is absurdly more powerful than the previous one as it creates a monster that is too strong even for the Zeo Ultrazord. Eventually, Zedd uses a bomb to blow up the Royal House of Gadgetry, leaving the Empire to crumble. With thier mission complete, the Evil Space Aliens go on holiday before returning to again menace the Earth. Despite this however, they are forced to retire from villainy before they can return after Rita gets pregnant.
In Space[]
After two years of retirement however, the Evil Space Aliens are later forced to rejoin the United Alliance of Evil although Finster is not present for the conference on the Cimmerian Planet.are later forced to attend the United Alliance of Evil's meeting on the Cimmerian Planet to celebrate Dark Specter's conquest of Eltar.
Later that year, Rita and Zedd lead their forces in a planet in the M-51 Galaxy and manage to defeat Trey of Triforia which includes Finster. When they learn of Dark Specter's death at the hands of Darkonda, Rita and Zedd decide to defect from the UAE but Zordon's Energy Wave washes over the planet. Although Finster is not shown when the Wave hits, he is later revealed to have been spared but retains his monster form instead of becoming human for unknown reasons.
Dino Thunder[]
Finster is featured in a chronicle of Power Ranger history compiled by Tommy Oliver shortly after he formed the Dino Rangers which is found by the nascent Ranger team in the Dino Lab.
Soul of the Dragon[]
By 2038, Finster has taken up residence in an apartment building in the alien friendly and futuristic Angel Grove whilst also befriending former Power Ranger Tommy Oliver. Tommy comes to him for advice after finding that the recent influx of Power Crystal-like crystals have been distributed on the black market by a woman known only as The Witch. Believing it to be his former mistress Rita, Finster warns them that this kind of power can only come from Lokar and gives them a box to absorb Rita's magic. However, The Witch turns out to be Scorpina who ambushes Finster in his home and murders him for helping Tommy although the former monster maker is able to deliver a final goodbye to Tommy using a sculpture.
Personality[]
Finster was a highly intelligent, wise, resourceful, and talented being as shown through his role as Rita and Zedd's good helper. He genuinely tried to help his superiors with their goals, preferring to do so in a nice and delicate way. Early in Season 3, he said that Vampirus was a nasty monster and not his cup of tea at all. However, he would later change his mind and create monsters just as tough, if not tougher than Rito's Vampirus.
Regardless, Finster takes his job in creating and designing monsters seriously. In Volume 2 of Hamilton's Mighty Morphin Power Rangers comic series, he was understandably wary with Baboo and Squatt's request to let them create a monster in his workshop to impress Lord Zedd both because of a similar scheme of theirs, failed prior and the two obviously lacked necessary skill and experience to do so unlike him. As expected, rather than an appropriately formidable creature like Finster's best works or Shellshock which Rita approved despite its eventual failure and being created without either her or Finster's approval back then, they instead created an erratic, dimwitted abomination which ridiculously flawed despite as resilient as hoped; it takes Billy tricking the creature to drink Bulk and Skull's poorly made milkshake to short-circuit itself to the death after their weapons failed to vanquish it unlike its predecessors.
In the alternative canon BOOM! Studios comics, however, Finster is more emotionally troubled than in main canon. Here, he found enjoyment in anguish brought by his creations, having unleashed first few of them upon his own village out of boredom over his quiet existence in his peaceful home village long ago. Such reprehensible deed unfortunately led to a tragedy where he unwittingly killed his beloved wife Plepra in a heated argument where she couldn't condone her husband's actions. In his remorse, he tried to revive her via. cloning with his special clay only to eventually destroy it when the clone pleaded him to stop like the original. It was through such issues Rita swayed him to join her cause.
