Biography[]
Background[]
The Fire That Stays is the last in a line of immortal Firelings skilled in Fire Angling. Seeing what he perceived to be the Firelings' decadence and their attachment to the Hallows that he believed to hold them back from achieving their true potential, he plotted to cleanse Mithra. After witnessing the Great Dim that nearly destroyed all of Mithra, he saw it as a cleansing force and sought to complete the destruction it brought. To this end, he crafted a weapon known as the Drowned Spear, and kidnapped many Fragors who he forced to bend to his will, creating an army.
Beneath the Dark Crystal[]
When Thurma and Nita are arguing over who should be the Ember Queen, they find the Fire That Stays and ask him to train them, which he agrees to. During the training, he instructs them to enter a waterfall which would be fatal if they didn't learn to master Mithra's elements to protect themselves, which they fail. He becomes stricter and pours water on them, delcaring that the Great Dim has awakened the Firelings from complacency.
Tired of their repeated failures, the Fire That Stays ends their training, but the two discover his enslavement of the Fragors and plan to destroy the Hallows. When he leads them to the Fireling capital, Thurma attempts to fight him with the Drowned Spear, only for him to take it from her and perforate the ground, causing a subterranean river to emerge. However, Nita releases a young Fragor, breaking the Fire's control over its parents. Angered, the Fire summons the tidal wave from the river to destroy the old Firefast's royal palace, but Thurma and the other Firelings combine their efforts and deflect it back to him, extinguishing his flame and killing him.
