Garfield Lynns, better known as Firefly, is a supporting antagonist in the Batman: Arkham franchise. He is a psychotic serial arsonist who seeks to engulf the entirety of Gotham City in flames.
Garfield Lynns was a pyrotechnic who worked as an FX Artist at Pannessa Studios. That career ended after the studios went bankrupt after a financial flop from making The Inferno. The owner of the studios, Tomaso Panessa, was forced to fire Lynns to save money (rather than be more frugal about his own living conditions), but was killed by Lynns immediately afterwards as Lynns spat nitroglycerine into Panessa's burning cigar. Afterwards, Lynns was employed by the military until he was dishonorably discharged due to his misconduct. He then became a petty criminal and arsonist until a fire at a chemical plant that he set went horrifically wrong and he ended up getting horrible burns over 90% of his body. Driven completely insane by his injuries, he began to believe that pain was glorious and fully embraced his identity as a psychotic pyromaniac by stealing military grade weaponry and a jetpack while taking on the alias of "Firefly". By that time, he already had multiple accounts of arson and robbery.

On Christmas Eve, Firefly is one of the eight assassins hired by Black Mask (later revealed to be the Joker) to kill Batman for $50 million. He is first seen in person at the assassins' meeting in the Royal Hotel along with Bane and the Electrocutioner, where the client is revealed to be the Clown Prince of Crime himself. Firefly has no apparent reaction to this whatsoever and leaves immediately after the Electrocutioner's death.
After the meeting, he flies off to the Gotham Pioneers Bridge where he sets up 4 bombs. Later, after Batman discovers that Bane knows his secret identity, he intercepts a broadcast from the GCPD about Firefly saying that he'll detonate the bombs if anyone but Batman approaches the bridge. When Captain Jim Gordon ignores this order and orders his officers onto the bridge anyway, Firefly overpowers them and takes SWAT Division leader Howard Branden hostage. According to one of Firefly's henchmen, Firefly packed the bridge with enough explosives to have the resulting explosion be heard throughout at least Gotham City, if not the entire eastern seaboard region of the United States. Whilst Batman handles his men, Firefly keeps himself busy by continuing to cause massive damage; destroying both a gas pipeline running under the bridge, a petrol tanker and eventually causing an explosion so large that part of the bridge completely collapses. Knowing that Firefly's bombs will put innocents in danger, Batman disables three of the bombs, one in the Boiler Room, one in the Train Station and one in the South Pillar. However, before he can disable the last bomb, he is confronted by Firefly where Batman informs Firefly that the Joker's been captured and thus he has no purpose to continue in pursuing the bounty. However, Firefly admits that he doesn't really care about the money and only wanted to pursue it to get the chance to cause arson-related destruction to anything he can get his hands on including Batman.
During their battle, Firefly finds the detonator when his flamethrower was knocked over one of the destroyed cars and proceeds to taunt Batman as "a bat that can't fly" but discovers that the final bomb does not go off, as the GCPD bomb squad managed to get to it before Batman. Enraged, Firefly chases Batman to the other side of the bridge as they continue to fight. As Firefly tries to retreat after unleashing a series of explosions near Batman, Batman latches on with his Batclaw, causing them to crash land on a support of the bridge where he destroys Firefly's jetpack and subdues him, leaving him hanging from the bridge's support for the GCPD to arrest him.
Arkham Shadow[]
Firefly was taken to Blackgate Prison and, after TYGER took over running it, convinced the guards to allow him to work the kitchen, though he was forbidden from going near the stove. These precautions proved insufficient as he shoved the cook's hand into the deep fat fryer, savoring the smell of the crackling flesh and the sound of the screams. This landed him in solitary confinement, where he later encountered Batman disguised as Irving "Matches" Malone. Firefly expressed approval of Malone's nickname and boasted about the incident in the kitchen, laughing maniacally. He declared his intention to burn down the entire prison once he escaped.
Arkham Asylum[]
Judging by his equipment's presence in Arkham Asylum, he was clearly transferred to the mental institution after it reopens following a renovation roughly five years after the Pioneer's Bridge incident. In a bathroom cabinet within the Island's Medical Facility in the Patient Observation Room, Batman can find a newspaper featuring Firefly next to his flame-throwing backpack and nozzle. Scanning this will unlock his character bio although Firefly himself isn't seen but he likely remains somewhere in the Asylum as his equipment is still present.
Batman: Arkham Unhinged[]
During the Joker's takeover of Arkham Asylum, the Asylum was destroyed so it was shutdown and abandoned in favor of a new prison named Arkham City. However, it is revealed that Firefly is secretly operating with Black Mask in his own newly-formed gang and assists him with his first (and successful) breakout attempt from Arkham City. However, during the escape, Firefly is left behind by the gang and disappears.

Nine months later, Firefly is part of Scarecrow's alliance of villains against Batman but he has become even more insane and obsessed with burning. However, his health has also apparently significantly deteriorated with time as almost every line he speaks is accompanied by a strained and painful sounding inhale so the damage to his lungs has clearly begun to catch up with him. Sometime before Scarecrow executes his master plan, Firefly strikes a deal with Station 17 fire chief Raymond Underhill to set fires so that the firefighters in his station won't be sacked due to government cutbacks. Firefly accepts since he is being paid to do what he loves but Underhill is unaware of just how treacherous the arsonist really is.
On Halloween night, he attacks Underhill and his firefighters and abandons them to be captured by rioters. Later, after Batman tracks the Arkham Knight and Oracle to Miagani Island, Firefly begins attacking the fire stations in the city beginning with the one in Bristol. After Batman witnesses the first fire-station going up in flames, he extinguishes it by using the Batmobile's power winch to reactivate the sprinkler systems. When Lynns breaks out of the building, he pursues Firefly who tries to stop him with napalm bombs but Batman eventually manages to tackle him when his jetpack runs low on power and beat him down. After a moment though, Firefly manages to break free and fly away only to be found by Batman at the remaining two fire stations in Gotham.
After his attack on the Otisburg fire station, Lynns tries to escape again but Batman holds on this time and manages to make him crash land onto the roof of the GCPD building where Firefly is taken into custody. In lock-up, Firefly sits on the floor depressed but promises to Batman that there is always a chance of escape no matter where he is kept. What happened to Firefly after this is unclear as he stays in the cell for the rest of the night but it's likely that, given how deep his psychosis is, he was sent to Arkham Asylum after it reopened.

Lynns has specialized knowledge of incendiary devices yet often gets burned by the fires he's creating. What little is in his medical records suggests he does not seek treatment for the pain - it seems to invoke a pleasure response in him. This is a dangerous combination. His obsession with fire is driving him to take ever larger risks and, if he is not stopped, he's going to destroy himself and potentially much of the city with him.

Firefly was first introduced as a mercenary driven by money; so much that he was prepared to destroy an entire bridge of innocent hostages as to force Batman out of hiding. Though pyromaniac, Firefly displayed more interest in money however he admits to Batman that he does "stare at flames for hours", normal obsessive personality traits of people who have pyromania. Firefly also has a habit of gloating and mocking his opponents, even during battles a trait which was shown upon Gotham's Pioneer Bridge.
10 years after their encounter, when Gotham City was abandoned because of Scarecrow's threat, Firefly had no incentive as to burn down the buildings he did, unlike in Arkham Origins where he nearly destroyed a bridge for 50,000,000 he simply did it because he enjoyed it. Firefly is also obsessively vengeful and admits to Batman that him attacking him was "payback for leaving [him] on that bridge". He has also shown to hate anything that may underwhelm, silence or destroy fire and was not coincidental that he had 30 firemen kidnapped and nearly killed. As a mercenary for hire, Firefly displays no one-sided loyalties as long as he gets paid. The only thing he shows genuine respect towards is fire. While in Arkham Origins he used pyrotechnics as a weapon, in Arkham Knight his obsession became more intense, he has described it as "man's one and only triumph", claiming it to be purifying.
As well as this, he states that pain is purifying, a possible reference to Firefly's own third-degree burns which he has presumably begun to see as a rite of some kind; making it entirely possible that he doesn't simply burn buildings and people for entertain to his own sadistic pyromania but to make everyone else "pure" through flames the same way Firefly was. He has also become more prophetic and unstable, almost seeing it as the nature of all things to burn and he was simply speeding things up by doing his line of work, once he even says while locked at GCPD that fire was nature's way of clearing the path, a further testament on how he's begun to see fire as cleansing. When being defeated he even screams "Gotham must burn" proving him to be the pathological and compulsive arsonist that he is.
Powers and Abilities[]
Endurance: Compared to normal thugs and even other enemies of Batman, Firefly is surprisingly resilient as he withstood being swing kicked in the head, repeatedly slammed into different parts of Pioneer's Bridge and dozens of punches to the face and torso from Batman.
Excellent Pyrotechnic: Firefly is an expert pyrotechnic, having worked both as a movie and army pyrotechnic and using these to expertly terrorize Gotham.
Arsenal[]
Flamethrower: Firefly's signature weapon is a large black flamethrower capable of spraying large swathes of orange flames from the nozzle. These were powerful enough to cripplingly damage Pioneer's Bridge.
Fire Bombs: Firefly used these extensively throughout his Batmobile chases in Arkham Knight during his attempts to escape.
Suit: Firefly wears a specialized gold and black suit that was flame resistant, capable of withstanding high G-forces and has a communicator built into the side of his helmet. It also appears to be what keeps him alive as he is never seen outside of it even in custody.
Jet-pack: Firefly's suit is also equipped with a powerful jetpack capable of granting him extremely rapid flight through the air.
