Firefly (previously designated AR-26710), better known as Sam and also known as the Molten Knight, is a major antagonist and playable character and boss fight in the 2023 science fantasy turn-based tactical role-playing video game Honkai: Star Rail.
Firefly was a servant of Elio and a Stellaron Hunter. Originally a member of the Iron Cavalry of Glamoth, she wore a suit of powerful mechanical armor known as "SAM" into battle. She desired to find a cure for Entropy Loss Syndrome, a terminal illness that threatened to cut her life short, as well as a way to live as a person rather than a weapon.
Firefly was voiced by Yuanyuan Song in Chinese, Analesa Fisher in English, Yu Hye-ji in Korean, and Tomori Kusunoki in Japanese (who also voiced Makima in Chainsaw Man). Sam was voiced by Ziqi Gan in Chinese, Adin Rudd in English (Rudd has also voiced Chatterbox in Goddess of Victory: Nikke), Jang Seo-hwa in Korean, and Jun Kasama in Japanese.
Appearance[]
Firefly is a beautiful young girl with long silvery blonde hair with a crystal teal ombre that reaches to her waist, fair skin, and eyes in a mix of deep ocean blue and sunset pink. She wears a brown blazer over a green and white dress with a yellow bow tied in the front. She wears white detachable sleeves that are about wrist-length and are held at the wrists with black ribbon-like bracelets — the right side having a white flower decorated with the ribbon-like bracelet, and the left side just plain. She wears a brown headband on top of her hair and two green feathers with a black bow on the left side of her head. At the bottom, she wears thigh-high stockings that fade from a dark color to a crystal teal from top to bottom. The tops of her stockings are lined with golden brass-like pieces. Her footwear consists of black heels with a base of white, with a pair of green gems in the center along with teal ruff-like collars that wrap around her ankles.
Personality[]
Firefly is a young woman who is burdened by a unique genetic condition known as Entropy Loss Syndrome, an irreversible chronic dissociation of a person's physical structure. This is due to the fact that she is a product of her heritage as an Iron Cavalry, a genetically engineered soldier created by the ancient country of Glamoth to fight as an implement against the annihilative Swarm. Born to battle, she was created for murder but is driven by an overwhelming need to live and possess a future beyond her somber destiny. Despite the melancholy inherent in her existence, she possesses an unbreakable spirit and a positive mindset. She is characterized by a stubborn determination to see the world in her own time, to seek out beauty and simply joys whenever possible, to cling to moments of peace, and to revel in the wilderness of nature and the fresh breezes, displays her yearning for an ordinary life, a stark contrast to the extraordinary and painful one she has.
Firefly belongs to, yet is set apart from, "SAM", the giant mechanized armor that she shares. SAM is both a formidable strategic attack mecha and literally the "cradle of her vitality", and yet Firefly goes out of her way to distance herself from it entirely, desiring to be known to the world as "Firefly", an individual with her own agenda and wants, not merely a weapon or an instrument, and this internal struggle between her programmed purpose and her developing individuality is the essence of her character. There is also a touch of sadness in Firefly, and this can be most readily observed in the fact that she never dreams, and she sleeps much less than other people. These quiet nights are spent observing the world, observing the lights and boats, as if trying to absorb every fleeting moment of life. Knowing she is spending her last days alive kindles a desperate hope to witness "the brightest light in the sky" before her wings get a chance to wither away. This vulnerability is typically concealed beneath her façade of courage and resolve, particularly in combat, where she battles with competence and a frenzied determination to battle on her own behalf.
Her journey to Penacony is a testament to her tenacious drive for a "dream". Knowing that accessing the Synesthesia Dreamscape would bring about great misery for her and potentially destroy her consciousness, she willingly places herself in harm's way. This act of her illustrates her deep longing to have a world where she is able to relish something taken for granted by others — a dream, a future, a life free of her genealogical issue. Her tears after finally reaching Penacony symbolize the overwhelming emotional relief of this desperately wanted experience, a moment of fragile hope in her bumpy journey. On her path with others, Firefly is observant and perceptive and has a knack for connecting, though sometimes keeping people at a distance. She finds the specifics in her friends, taking their trips and her own into account relative to them. Her desire to leave a lasting "mark" on the world in others' memories, particularly Black Swan, shows an aspiration toward a kind of immortality, a way of transcending her fleeting being.
Firefly is a character whose existence itself is an acute blend of vulnerability, toughness, and hope, shaped by one who has lived in the language of suffering and the quest for meaning. Underneath her exterior, she is tender, genuine, and extremely compassionate, with an instinctive empathy for others, certainly because she has also experienced harshness through way of rough upbringing and the bodily sufferings which she has had to undergo. Rather than being hardened by adversity, Firefly turns her tragedy into sympathy, attempting to understand other individuals and to comfort them with sometimes startling emotional maturity. Her demeanor is usually reserved and softly spoken, a product of a reflective temperament and an unwillingness to intrude. But beneath her reserve lies fierce resolve and passion—when duty demands, Firefly displays unwavering tenacity and the courage to face even the darkest of challenges with unflinching courage. Her stoicism does not mask coldness but is born of acceptance, a grit-born elegance attained through years of wrestling with fate and clashing with inner and outer oppositions.
Though weighed down with unimaginable physical and emotional pain from her affliction and history as a genetically created being, Firefly otherwise possesses childlike longing for enjoyment in life; freedom, friendship, and real experiences. She is all too cognizant of her mortality, yet rather than succumbing to despair, she longs for significance, hoping to defy a life that would merely reduce her to tool or machine. Her search for meaning provides her with a nearly poetic perspective on life: she sees loveliness in fleeting moments, sanctifies minute acts of kindness, and is perpetually searching for hope amidst the ruins.
Firefly's social interactions are defined by humility and openness. She is the kind who listens patiently and responds candidly, never manipulating nor posturing behind bluster. There is a melancholy about her, yet also warmth—she forms profound, true connections with others she has come to trust and inspires loyalty based on the sincerity of her vulnerabilities and the vulnerability of hers. When forced into crisis or combat, however, her tone changes: still rooted in compassion, she is fiercely determined to protect, daring and resourceful, capable of turning sadness into determination and terror into action. Her own identity is paradoxically one: both soft and firm, optimistic and perpetually haunted by the uncertainty of life, Firefly's own power lies in her ability to nurture light in the dark. She is marked by self-awareness and the humble acknowledgment of her own limitations, but she's also a rebellious soul who always strives to narrate her own tale, and never to fall prey to the tragedy others wish for.
Equipment[]
Firefly's Fyrefly Type-IV Strategic Assault Mech.
- Fyrefly Type-IV Strategic Assault Mech: As a member of the Iron Cavalry of Glamoth, Firefly was created and genetically modified to pilot a "Fyrefly Type-IV Strategic Assault Mech," commonly abbreviated as "S.A.M." or simply "SAM." SAM was a suit of advanced mechanical armor designed to aid its wearer in combating The Swarm, dangerous insectoids that followed the fallen Aeon Tayzzyronth. The suit was constructed out of a silvery alloy that was both incredibly sturdy and light. It was tethered to Firefly's consciousness and nervous system, allowing her to feel the same sensations as the suit and be in perfect synchronization with it. The armor also enhanced her senses and granted her greatly increased physical strength and endurance. The suit was so durable that it could remain undamaged in air pressure millions of times greater than normal. SAM also granted Firefly with protection from environmental effects such as radiation, heat, and the vacuum of space. The suit's true destructive potential stemmed from its ability to produce flames, which the wearer could project out of several exhausts in the armor. Exhausts in the upper back and heels of the armor acted as a propulsion system that granted the wearer with increased jumping capacity and even high-speed flight. The fire was so hot that it could incinerate anything it came into contact with, though Firefly could lower its intensity to the point that it was suitable for cooking meat. At their full capability, the flames produced by Firefly's armor could destroy a planet.

Trivia[]
- Ironically, both of Firefly's English (Analesa Fisher) and Japanese (Tomori Kusunoki) voice actresses suffer from chronic illnesses. In which, Firefly's Entropy Loss Syndrome has symptom eerily mirrors the former's Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome and Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis.
