"Fishy" Joseph Gillman, also known as Fishy Joe, is the secondary antagonist of the Futurama episode “The Problem with Popplers”. He is a greedy businessman who refuses to stop selling Popplers even after learning they are alive, which results in an invasion from Lrrr.
He is voiced by Maurice LaMarche, who also voiced Leonardo da Vinci, the Donbot, Francis X. Clampazzo, Walt, the Big Brain, Schlump and Fleb, and Lrrr in the same series, as well as Brain in Animaniacs and Pinky and the Brain, Mr. Big in Zootopia, Calendar Man and Mr. Freeze in the Batman: Arkham video game series, Mortimer Mouse in the Mickey Mouse franchise, Gart Default in Robot and Monster, Joseph Stalin in Histeria!, Koto in All Hail King Julien, Yosemite Sam in the Looney Tunes universe, Alec Baldwin in Team America: World Police, Dr. Nitrus Brio in the Crash Bandicoot franchise, and Father in Codename: Kids Next Door.
Biography[]
Fishy Joe is a successful businessman who has expanded his fast food company, Fishy Joe's, to every planet in the universe (Except McPluto). One day he spotted Fry and Bender selling Popplers as food on the street, and decided to include them in his business. He hired Planet Express to go around the universe delivering Popplers to the whole universe. A total of 198 Billion Popplers were eaten as a result of that.
Leela and others would later protest against the commercialization after finding out that Popplers are not only alive but also intelligent enough to talk. Fishy Joe, Leela and a vegetarian activist known as Free Waterfall Jr. were invited to discuss the Popplers situation on Linda’s TV program. Fishy Joe defended his rights to continue selling Popplers, first stating there is not enough evidence that they are intelligent and, after being proven wrong, saying it doesn’t matter to him.
Earth is then invaded by Lrrr and his army of Omicronians. He states that the Popplers they have been eating are baby Omicronians and that he is going to get revenge on the humans for eating them. Fishy Joe is later seen at the DOOP headquarters, where Lrrr announces he will devour Leela because she is the first person to eat Popplers.
He has made cameos in several other episodes since then.
Personality[]
Fishy Joe is a fast food entrepreneur whose main goal is making a profit. He doesn’t care about the lives of aliens or animals and is willing to sell them for food, even if they are intelligent. He is also spiteful enough to kill Popplers in front of Leela and Waterfall just to piss them off.
