~ Hernández before trying to kill the player. |
Flaco Hernández is a minor antagonist of the 2018 western action-adventure video game Red Dead Redemption II and major character in the 2019 spin-off multiplayer Red Dead Online. He is a former gunslinger tracked down by the player (either Arthur Morgan or John Marston depending on at what point the player accepts the mission) for information about Jim "Boy" Calloway.
Biography[]
Hernández is an outlaw who used to ride with a gang of 10 men. Known as "The Terror of the Grizzlies", he carried out robberies and murders in Valentine, Strawberry and Annesburg and is wanted in eight states. During this time he met Jim "Boy" Calloway, who was an incompetent, drunken coward despite his in-game heroic reputation. By 1899 he had joined the Del Lobo Gang.
Red Dead Online[]
The player can encounter Hernandez in his cabin next to Cairn Lake in Grizzlies West. When they enter, he will initially hold them at gunpoint until he recognises them as a prison escapee. He then asks if he can trust them and suddenly fires a series of shots past them, laughing at their reaction, and explains that he's heard good things about them. He enlists the player to deal with a rival gang based near Lake Isabella, offering to pay them for their assistance.
Afterwards Hernández can be found at Cairn Lodge again and will offer paid killings, coach robberies and horse/wagon theft missions to the player. Accepting his missions will decrease the player's honour.
Red Dead Redemption II[]
If the player accepts the mission "The Noblest of Men, and a Woman", they are given the names of four outlaws - Hernández, Billy Midnight, Emmet Granger and Black Belle - to track down and interview about Jim Calloway for his biography. Hernández can be found at his cabin near the frozen Cairn Lake surrounded by Del Lobos. The gang members order the player to leave and the player has the option to threaten them or try and defuse the situation. Threatening them will cause them to back off, but attempting to defuse the situation will cause the gang to attack the player before they can reach Hernández's cabin, forcing them to kill them all.
Whatever happens, the player knocks on Hernández's door and asks him for a quote about Calloway. Hernández emerges, spits and shouts "Here's your message!" before pulling out his gun and attempting to shoot the player, who must shoot him dead. Upon killing Hernández the player is to photograph his corpse to bring back to Calloway's biographer, who credits Calloway with killing Hernández.
Trivia[]
- If the player attempts to defeat Hernández non-lethally by shooting his gun out of his hand, he will produce a shotgun and the gunfight will continue as normal.
- Hernández is the only outlaw in the mission who may not die from a single hit if a low-powered weapon is used.
