Before you and I met, one of my embers told me about his work as Oscorp and this 'treatment' that they had... 'discovered'. A fancy suit that can make you 'big and strong' is just another case of the unworthy trying to cheat death and play god. That's when I thought too. But... when devils attacked the city, LIKE I PROPHESIED, and Oscorp sent out some of that treatment for 'safekeeping'. I knew... It was meant... for me.
~ The Flame revealing his true goal.
And when the Crimson Hour rolls over this Earth, it shall bring truth, judgement... and carnage.
~ The Flame after acquiring a sample of the symbiote; his famous quote.

The Flame is a minor antagonist in the 2023 superhero video game Marvel's Spider-Man 2, the third installment of Insomniac's Marvel's Spider-Man series. He is a serial killing cultist and the leader of his very own cult that believe themselves to be the chosen worthy for the prophesied event known as the "Crimson Hour".

His ongoing activities have managed to catch the attention of the Wraith to pursue him, as well as allow him to come in conflict with Spider-Man himself.

He was voiced by Chad Doreck.

Personality[]

My embers. I've heard some concern amongst you recently concerning our losses at the clinic. My concern is that you thought of them as losses at all. Those embers who fell revealed themselves to be unworthy, and though we miss them, we have only grown stronger without them. So. When little miss Yuri and the Fool's Beacon come to visit us, you show them how worthy we are. Trust the Flame. For everything burns.
~ The Flame persuading his followers.

The Flame is a deranged cultist that worships a prophecy he dubs as the "Crimson Hour"; a cataclysmic event that will purge the unworthy while he will be spared. His psychotic delusions have inspired those that share his interests, leading him to form a cult of his very own followers, believing it to be a form of "love". His obsession with the Crimson Hour has led him to become a pyromaniac, as evident on the burned scars across his arms and body.

He has no regard for the lives around him and takes great delight in putting his victims through danger. Due to this, he has a strong desire for causing destruction and he becomes obsessed with the Wraith when he witnesses it first hand at the destruction she causes in return.

When he learns of the symbiote and its ability to grant its host superhuman capabilities, the Flame becomes heavily obsessed with it, believing he is worthy for its power and thus becomes determined to have it in his possession at any costs. The reality behinds his actions are purely selfish and full of lies, as his prophecy was nothing more than a means of tricking his followers into helping him claim the symbiote for his own taking.

Biography[]

Past[]

The Flame was a notorious criminal that came in conflict with Yuri while she was still working for the NYPD. He had led many different cults that he would later kill each of its members off and assumed a different alias in each one, in order to get away with his crimes. This made it extremely difficult for Yuri to track him down, as she would spend months figuring out his current operations. Eventually, he would found a new cult and form the prophesied event called the "Crimson Hour", as a means of gaining new followers.

Marvel's Spider-Man 2[]

Following Sandman's rampage, the Flame had his followers raid a care center, stealing items they need as well as torturing and endangering those around them. Spider-Man eventually arrived to the scene where he put an end to their crimes. He also met with Yuri, who was now going by the alias Wraith, as she had been keeping tabs on the Flame and his activities.

Deciding to work together. Spider-Man and Wraith eventually met with the Flame himself through a video projection, in which he gave them his location at an old hospital north of Astoria. Wraith intended to go by herself, but Spider-Man warned her that it was an obvious trap and was able to convince her to plan out their strategy before heading out.

Despite this, the Wraith went ahead and took out many of the Flame's followers that were guarding the hospital, with the intent of killing him for good. Spider-Man managed to arrive on time to prevent her from killing the Flame, leading them to fight briefly. In doing so, the Flame was able to escape from their clutches.

The Flame later plotted to cause massive collateral damage by having a train ram into an oil tanker truck. Spider-Man managed to arrive on time to prevent the damage by stopping the train, but ended up getting trapped under the train. The Flame then revealed himself, with a few of his followers in which they proceeded to grab the train's cargo, containing a sample of the symbiote from Oscorp. As he dowsed Spider-Man in gasoline, the Flame revealed his true plan was to claim the symbiote for his own after learning about the power it could grant to its host, as the symbiote turned red in his hand. He then proceeds to lit the gasoline on fire and flee in a helicopter with his followers, but Wraith managed to save Spider-Man before he could burn to death.

Despite the Flame's escape and his going underground, Spider-Man and Wraith managed to deal a crushing blow to the cult leader's operations. Wraith vows that she would continue tracking him, looking into a list of his old aliases, but notes that it could take months or even years for her to find a lead. Regardless, Spider-Man assures her that he will be ready when she does discover something on the Flame.

Quotes[]

I extended my hand when nobody else would. I doubt you or the Fool's Beacon there would've done the same. But what would it take for you to love me?
~ The Flame wanting the Wraith's love.
The Fool's Beacon himself, as I prophesi---agh!
~ The Flame upon Spider-Man's arrival and being stabbed by Wraith.
Spider-Man: Congratulations. You get to spend the rest of your life behind bars.

The Flame: And I owe it all to you.

~ The Flame to Spider-Man as the latter attempts to take him into custody.

Trivia[]

  • The Flame is notable for being the first adaptation of Carnage to use the name "Cletus Kasady" as an alias, rather than it being his real name.
  • The Flame is depicted as a fanatical, murderous cult leader, much like how Carnage became a cult leader under the servitude of Knull in Donny Cate's comic book run, Venom.
