Flare Arlgrande Jioral, currently known as Freia, is the deuteragonist of the 2017 Japanese dark fantasy light novel series Redo of Healer as well as its manga and anime adaptations of the same name.
She is voiced by Ayano Shibuya in the anime adaptation.
Biography[]
Flare is the princess of Jioral and is the older sister of Norn Clatalissa Jioral. To the public, Flare presented herself as a kind and upright noble, but in truth was a cruel sadist that looked down on the lower class. She was in a party with the Sword Hero, Blade, and the Cannon Hero, Bullet. She welcomed into her party the series' main protagonist, Keyaru. But her attitude towards Keyaru swiftly changed due to him being a farmer and being part of the healer class, people Flare also looked down upon. Flare began to drug Keyaru and tortured him to no end, even going so far as to call him her pet and made him addicted to a healing drug for her and her party's personal gain. While many others, including Blade and Bullet and the knights guarding her castle had also partook in the torture, Flare was the one who orchestrated the entire thing. Keyaru grew a deep hatred towards Flare, whom he felt took everything from him, and swore vengeance on her and all others who relished in his torment.
Keyaru was able to rewind back in time four years back to when he was approached by Flare, who would become his first target. He made sure to prepare for his ordeal by slowly becoming immune to the drug that was being fed to him. When the immunity took effect, he broke free of his imprisonment and disguised himself as the knight captain Renard to avoid capture. When he was alone with Flare and her two maids, he killed the maids when caught her off guard with his disguise when the latter viciously disrobed her by shredding the front side of her dress as well drained her from her magic, making her defenseless and weak without her magic. He then revealed himself as the "dog" that she had been tormenting for so long, now wanting to repay the favor. She tried to convince him that the only reason she only placed him through agony and despair was for his sake. She pleaded with him, saying she can offer money, status, and even women to him but Keyaru simply laughed at her bargaining and began to torture and rape her ruthlessly. Keyaru starts off by breaking Flare's fingers, shredding the remaining of her dress and then proceeds to sexually harass and rape her instead of being impaled with heated rod. Keyaru viciously pinched Flare's butt, then pulling her hair and squeezed her left breast not before Flare painfully screamed that she doesn't want to get pregnant with a "low life". Barely alive, when she tries to crawl away only for Keyaru grabbing her at her hair and shown their reflection of Flare's mirror. After he was finished with her, Keyaru proclaimed that he will wipe out her memories and change her looks, stating that Princess Flare will no longer exist. She begged him to stop one last time to no avail as Keyaru used his "Heal" on her, with her screams filling the background.
Keyaru managed to fool the public by making it look like the princess had died by disguising one of the maids he had killed to look like her. The real Flare awoke the next morning to Keyaru with no memory about her past. Keyaru told her to call him Keyarga and that her name was Freia. From then on, Freia became devoted to and fell in love with Keyarga and was the first to join his party. Traces of her former personality would come back here and there but ultimately, Princess Flare was gone from the world forever. He used Freia and change back her to her former appearance as Flare to persuade Kureha and turn all villages against the Jioral Kingdom, revealing they were never the shield of humanity due to their atrocities and cruelties.
Personality[]
Princess Flare presented herself as an adoring noble figure, showing kindness and courage as the Mage Hero. But behind closed doors, the real Flare is the complete opposite, as she is very arrogant and selfish due to her exceptional magical abilities and her beautiful looks. She relishes in her status as the princess as she looks down upon the lower class. Flare also had a sadistic streak to her as she subjected Keyaru to merciless torture and abuse to fuel her own ego. It's clear that she got enjoyment out of it as she called the Hero of Recovery her "dog" in a twisted, affectionate manner and usually had an evil grin on her face when torturing him. She also is not as intelligent as she lets on, as her own sister Norn views Flare as a mere weapon with no other discernible value.
While it is known that Flare never tortured Bullet and Blade unlike Keyaru, given the fact that the two of them turned out to be more useful to her, Flare actually had no appreciation for them, this is shown when Flare apparently ended up hurt during the final confrontation before Keyaru went back in time, Bullet and Blade ended up dying, then when Keyaru defeated Eve Reese, Flare looked completely fine and no trace of being hurt, besides Flare didn't look at all distraught or upset that Blade and Bullet died, showing that Flare didn't care about anyone but herself. Despite her status as a "hero" after Keyaru drained her powers leaving her defenseless and weak, Flare is very cowardly as she quickly tried to justify her actions by saying it was for Keyaru's sake when it ends up going wrong for her. She went so far as to bargain with him when the Mage Hero was at his mercy by offering him money, status or women. In her final moments before her memory wipe, she proved to be vain to the very end when she belittled and insulted Keyaru for being a "commoner" even as she was being tormented by him claiming she doesn't want to get pregnant with a "lowlife" like Keyaru. In the past, Flare used to love her younger sister, Norn, very much until she became the "Mage Hero" and candidate for the throne, while Norn on the other hand, lost her candidacy and those who were her allies for her lack of combat abilities after their father abused them in having a sibling rivalry. Due to her successes and her sister's failures in combat abilities, Flare no longer cared about her sister and looked down on Norn by calling her a big failure.
As Freia, she truly became the persona she used to fool most of the Jioral kingdom, being a humble young woman who is kind to all. She would dedicate herself to Keyarga and became madly in love with him and holds a strong sense of justice, a contrast Keyarga takes note of and is amused by. She also gets jealous when she sees him having sex with other women. Despite this drastic change in character, she still retained her skill at manipulation and deceit and could imitate her former self without difficulty by revealing to the public of the Jioral Kingdom's true nature causing the entire villages to turn against them when they learned the kingdom were never the shield of humanity due to their cruelty and malice after they enslaved innocents (humans and demi-humans alike). Another remnant of her old behavior shown in Freia was the disregard she has of people dying because of Keyarga, saying it didn't matter because of how blindly loyal she is to him. She would even retain her clueless nature, although now it is greatly emphasized. During Keyarga's torments towards Norn, Freia proclaimed herself as a shameless and masochist pervert while cosplaying as a dog. Although, this was due to Keyarga brainwashing Freia to say this for his own enjoyment and for Norn's suffering.
