Flect Turn is a major antagonist in the anime series My Hero Academia, serving as the overarching antagonist of the anime exclusive episode “Long Time No See, Selkie” and the main antagonist of the 2021 film My Hero Academia: Worlds Heroes' Mission.
He is the leader of the terrorist cult group Humarise and Rody Soul's archenemy, who claims to want to prevent the Quirk Doomsday Theory, but actually seeks to kill off all the Pro Heroes and the majority of Quirk users in the world with bombs to collapse society.
He was voiced by Kazuya Nakai in the Japanese version and Robbie Daymond in the English dub, who also portrayed Eighth Brother in Star Wars Rebels, Superior Spider-Man in Spider-Man, and Toneri Ōtsutsuki in The Last: Naruto the Movie
Appearance[]
Flect Turn is a tall and slim man with luminescent light blue skin, a shaved head of dark blue hair, a goatee mustache and arrow-shaped earrings.
He wears a red robe, a golden belt, and two glove-like prostheses accompanied with fingertips, his pants are also grey and he wears combat boots. His clothes have small disks in which he contains the energy of his quirk, his villain costume is a long white cloak with dark red parts inside.
Personality[]
Flect is a charismatic, cold, and calculated man. He is focused on destroying Quirk society, similar to the previous villain Kai Chisaki. Similar to Chisaki, Flect believed Quirks needed to be purged from mankind and has not even a shred of remorse for his actions and views. Though Flect was willing to go even further than Chisaki to achieve his goals, going so far as to commit populicide and attempt genocide on Pro Heroes.
Flect is shown to be a hypocrite as, like the aforementioned Chisaki, he has a Quirk himself and is perfectly willing to use it in battle. Many members of his cult have Quirks as well and Flect is shown to be intending to allow them to survive the Quirk genocide (alongside himself) as well, further showing his hypocrisy.
In spite of his tragic backstory, it's shown during his fight with Izuku Midoriya that Flect is simply pushing his own misery onto others rather than genuinely trying to save humanity, and as pointed out by Izuku, he "gave up on humanity". This causes Flect to explode in rage and attempt to beat Izuku to death with his fists.
He's shown to be ruthless, kidnapping scientists like Eddie Soul and threatening to murder their families (children included) if they don't design the bombs for him. Eddie eventually lost his life trying to stop Humarise's efforts. He kills off an entire city with his bombs in his first scene and intends to kill all the Pro-heroes and Quirk users of the world in order to complete his goals. Although he initially seemed reasonable with Rody by trying to get him to hand over the key to deactivate the bombs while claiming he would spare his siblings, he quickly shot Rody with lasers and went back on the offensive when Rody tried to turn the bombs off.
In the end, Flect is a delusional madman who claimed to be saving humanity yet was really pushing his own personal problems onto them, using a theory with no actual proof of it ever coming true as an excuse for genocide. Flect went far beyond any tragedy he may have had, ultimately being a bigger threat to humanity than any other villain thus far.
History[]
Background[]
Born with a Quirk that reflected anything that touched him, Flect never was held by his parents and felt their love nor could he even have friends or a lover. Not even killing himself would work. Flect then decided due to his problems, all humans suffered because of their Quirks. He created a cult group of terrorists called Humarise and decided to wipe out Pro-heroes and many Quirks users in the world with Trigger bombs. Flect used the Quirk Doomsday Theory as an excuse for his actions even though he was really acting due to his personal issues.
Many Quirks users joined Humarise, further showing Flect's delusions. Flect would kidnap scientists such as Eddie Soul and force them to make the Trigger bombs, threatening to murder their families otherwise. Eddie would eventually make a key to deactivate the bombs, but his treachery was discovered and he was killed by Humarise.
After a group of heroes led by Ryukyu managed to stop the delivery of cargo drugs sent to Humarise, Flect stated it was fine since they had enough already to start their plan and then decided to begin "humanity's salvation."
My Hero Academia: Worlds Heroes' Mission[]
After Flect unleashes his first trigger bomb in a city, which drives all the Quirks users Quirks out of control and brutally kills them all, he then begins announcing Humarise to the public. After another scientist stole a briefcase with Humarise information, Flect had Beros hunt down and critically injured him. However, thanks to Midoryia and Rody Soul, the suitcase was switched with a suitcase full of jewels. Flect then had the leader of the police in Otheon frame Midoriya a mass murderer of twelve people.
Flect found an image of Rody and recognized him. Eventually, he made a message to the public, stating in two hours the bombs would go off and kill all Quirk users around the world. However, it's revealed in a video the heroes find his true goal is to lure the heroes to the bombs and kill them, thus collapsing society in the process. After Midoriya, Rody, Katsuki Bakugo, and Shoto Todorki arrived at the Humarise headquarters, Midoriya confronted Flect. The two engaged in battle, during which they argued over Flect's motives. Flect claimed that due to the Quirk Doomsday Theory he had to eliminate Quirks.
However, Midoriya pointed out it was a mere theory and there was nothing to suggest it would actually come true. After Flect revealed his backstory, Midoriya called out that he gave up on connecting with others and there's no excuse to push his personal problems on others.
Rody appears and has the key to deactivate the bombs. He feigns handing it over but tries to get past Flect while Midoryia attacks him. However, Flect later injures Rody with a laser. Due to his Quirk reflecting the hero's attacks, Flect overpowers Midoriya and as Rody collapses, smirks about how both father and son died in vain. However, Midoriya gets back up and refuses to stop fighting.
Midoriya goes all out and uses One For All: Full Cowl - 100% to destroy Reflect's energy manifestation and knock out Flect, causing her to get reverted back into his true form. However, as he goes off to help Rody, Flect states to himself he is too late to stop the bombs. However, thanks to Pino (Rody's Quirk; a bird that expresses his true feelings), the heroes barely manage to put the key in and deactivate the bombs in time. Then Flect and the remaining Humarise members are all arrested by the Otheon police.
Powers and Abilities[]
Quirk[]
- Reflect: Flect Turn's Quirk allows him to reflect any attack and its effect back at it's user. He can also store the attack to use later, rather than just reflecting it immediately. This Quirk isn't well suited for enduring several powerful attacks and will wear out in prolonged battles. A more powerful attack cannot be reflected by the Quirk, showcased when he couldn't reflect Izuku's United States of World Smash in the climax of their battle.
Trivia[]
- He is similar to Kai Chisaki, both are delusional and hypocritical, believing Quirks should be purged from the world yet they have and are willing to use their own Quirks themselves. While Chisaki only intends to eradicate the Quirks themselves from the world, Flect is willing to kill all Quirk users worldwide, save for himself and his cult of followers.
- To add to Flect’s hypocrisy, his method of genocide on the Quirk population through the use of Trigger Bombs brought what was prophesied by the Quirk Doomsday Theory to reality: that the power of Quirks would fall out of control and bring ruination to people’s lives. The Trigger Bombs did exactly that by forcing people’s Quirks to go out of control to the point where they would die from the accelerated drawbacks to their bodies.
- He was the only My Hero Academia movie villain to not have any connection to All For One, or the League of Villains. Whereas the two previous movie villains, Wolfram was an affiliate of All For One and received his Muscle Augmentation Quirk from him, while Nine was a test subject of Daruma Ujiko and received a weaker version of All For One’s Quirk.
