~ Delphineus describes Flesh-Eater. |
Icarus, better known as Flesh-Eater, is the main antagonist in the 1991 Sierra game Ecoquest: The Search for Cetus. He is a manta ray who has been mutated by toxic waste, and is terrorizing the kingdom of Eluria.
Biography[]
Flesh-Eater was originally a harmless manta named Icarus, who was a loyal friend to King Cetus, and stated to be a strict vegetarian by the game's manual. However, his curiosity led him to explore more remote areas of Eluria, and he swam into toxic waste. The poison mutated his brain and also caused him to grow in size. In the early stages of his mutation, he became power-hungry, and used his cunning to lead Cetus into a trap, resulting in the whale being harpooned. However, as his mental state deteriorated further, he lost his capacity for rational thought, becoming a monster that only acts on base instincts such as fear and rage. This led him to go on a maddened rampage throughout the kingdom, eating any Elurians who crossed his path. He has also become addicted to the toxic waste, living in a lair close to it so he can feed off the poison.
In the game, Adam and Delphineus first see him swooping over the kingdom and have to hide from him. As they get closer to finding Cetus, Flesh-Eater comes out of his lair and chases them. Delphineus runs into a net and is captured. Flesh-Eater takes him to his lair and waits for him to suffocate, but is called away by Cetus, who challenges him to fight. Adam manages to free Delphineus and stuns Flesh-Eater with a lionfish spine. It is stated that Flesh-Eater is not dead, and that since Adam has cleared up the toxic waste, he may recover and return to being the friendly manta that he once was.
