~ Flip about to starting his fight in This is England 86.

Flip is a minor antagonist turning supporting character in the This is England series. He is the brutish leader of the local moped gang. And is the former main antagonist to Shaun Fields.

He is portrayed by Perry Fritzpatrick who also played Jake McKenzie/Paul in Peak Practice and Ray in Anita and Me.

Personality[]

Originally, Flip was a hypocritical, dodgey, short-tempered, cocky, arrogant and brutal man who didn't see himself as a bully and instead as a hero. He was shown to be so obsessed with Jemma that he wanted her to be engaged with him and in addition wanted to have sex with her and gain blow jobs. For unknown reasons, Flip originally had a hatred towards Shaun, despite still having some good terms with him of starting to like him, albeit using him as a tool to help him make Jemma go out with him via insulting her. He is best friends with Higgy.

In later episodes, Flip's above personality seems to have died down. While he still had a hatred towards Shaun when he reunited with him, it is revealed they both made amends with eachother at the Hippie Rave as they are seen happily hugging eachother, likely meaning they became friends ever since (It's also presumed he got over his obsession towards Jemma, hence he no longer spoke of her). He now turns out to be now more calmer, relaxed, friendlier and supportive to others.

Flip speaks in a thick English accent.

History[]

Flip's backround and early life is unknown, however he is first seen in This is England 86 with his gang, alongside his sidekick Higgy. They are riding mopeds and wearing football casual clothing such as Sergio Tacchini, Ellesse and Fila tracksuits. They soon encounter Shaun at the bus stop eating chips and calls him ''Ginge'' while greeting him. Flip then asks Shaun to call a girl named Jemma a "Fat Dog" whom he has a crush on and promises he wouldn't do anything to Shaun after the insult other than either slightly shouting at him or tripping him over to make Jemma think he is a hero, Shaun however questions why he could not try being nice to her with Flip answering him that she thinks he is a bully and begs Shaun to co operate and Shaun bitterly comes along. After arriving at Jemma's house, the boys are kindly served drinks by Jemma and when she comes into the living room to have a talk. Shaun soon awkwardly calls her a "Fat Dog" and Flip gets up from the sofa, grabs Shaun and bashes him and falls on the lava lamp owned by the father of Jemma and ends up hurt afterwards with then complaining to Flip breaking his promise to him over not assaulting him which leads Jemma to realise that Flip has set this all up to make Shaun call her a "Fat Dog" and Jemma to scowls at Flip for his behavior and slaps him in the face and hits him. Jemma declines the engagement with Flip and claims that she would rather be with Shaun as she considered the latter a nice person unlike Flip. Shaun then runs out of Jemma's house and Flip shouts that he will be after him.

Later on, an irritated Flip and his gang shows up to Shaun and his group playing football and Flip angrily searches for Shaun to punch him in the jaw for foiling his above plan. Flip claims that he will let the ones save for Shaun live if they stay out of the fight. Flip counts from 13 but Harvey punches Flip in the face but leaves him unaffacted and sadistically headbutts Harvey and everyone brawls. When the Police arrive in the scene, Flip and his gang flee. He is not seen afterwards.

In 1990, Flip and Higgy make a return in the series and have notable differences in appearance, such as wearing sunglasses, velvet waistcoats and have grown moustaches and appear to be styling themselves on Duran Duran and Bros. They now act as the comic relief duo for the series, even buying a £1's worth of cannabis, in order to allow a woman to smell it to become intoxicated. They are shown to be clueless and feeble with now having a greater and friendlier relationship towards Harvey and the gang. On the roadtrip to a party overnight, Harvey and the gang Flip coincidently encounter Flip and Higgie much to the pleasure of everyone. Flip reveals he and Higgie are stranded due to their car's engine failure and when everyone comes out of Harvey's car for a talk, Flip discovers that Shaun is with them and still appears to have a hatred towards Shaun but the hatred cools down as seconds move on. Flip and Higgie join Harvey and the rest in their car due to theirs being broken to get them all to the party and end up in the middle of nowhere until they soon hear music and unexpectedly end up in a Hippie Rave. Everyone has a good time and it's revealed that Flip and Shaun have made amends as they are seen soon jumping and hugging each other while on Ecstasy.

Flip and Higgy are much later seen at Woody and Lol's wedding.

Appearance[]

In This is England 86, Flip has short dark brown hair and wears a sky blue and white tracksuit and white and black sneakers and wears a yellow helmet while riding his moped.

In his return of This is England 90, Flip's appearance has heavily changed; he now has blonde mixed black hair and a short dark moustache. He also wears dark cop-like sunglasses, detailed sand coloured and white jackets with a black shirt depicting a lion holding guns and typical blue jeans with a brown belt and brown shoes.

Trivia[]

  • It's possible Flip went to the same school as Shaun went to.
  • While it's unknown what Flip's age is, he appears to have been in his debut, somewhere in his 20s.
