Villain Overview

And then... I understood. The only one who can lay waste to the Titans is a devil. And if I can bring back that devil, that should be my mission in life! That has to be why I survived like a coward when everyone else died! So don't you dare get in the way!
~ Floch trying to persuade Mikasa and Eren in support for reviving Erwin Smith.
If Eren dies, Paradis will sink under a sea of blood! The entire world will take vengeance on us! Your parents, your siblings, your children; they'll all be slaughtered! Devote your hearts!
~ Floch rallies the Yeagerists in the battle at the harbor.
Look there. He's telling us something, that we have to fight. We can't just cower behind our walls, waiting for death to come. We need to fight like he does, like devils.
~ Floch to Jean during the Raid on Liberio.

Floch Forster is a major antagonist in the anime/manga series Attack on Titan. Originally a member of the Garrison who transferred into the Survey Corps, and one of the nine survivors of the Battle of Shiganshina District, Floch eventually dived into extremist views after the existence of billions of human beings and numerous nations in the entire world is revealed to the isolated population of the Walls in Paradis Island. Believing that only Eren Yeager can lead Eldia to victory against the entire world, Floch joins Eren in his plan of killing every living being outside of Paradis Island so that the inhabitants of his homeland can finally know peace, becoming the de facto leader of the Yeagerist faction. He is the archenemy of Hange Zoë.

He is voiced by Kensho Ono (who also voiced Yuri Briar from the Spy × Family series) in Japanese and Matt Shipman in English.

Appearance[]

Floch is a man of average height and build with thick and dense ginger hair and hazel eyes. As a young recruit and fresh member of the Scout Regiment, he often has an uneasy and timid look in his eyes and his hair forms a big tuft with bangs growing onto his forehead on either side. After transferring from the Garrison, he is dressed in the orange uniform of the Survey Corps with its two-winged emblem and, during the Battle of Shiganshina District, he also wears the green cape of the Scouts.

As an older, more experienced member of the Survey Corps, his hair is smoother and denser, with many short bangs swept to the right and entirely covering his forehead. His gaze is also sterner, displaying new confidence and giving him an angrier look. In most fights, he wears the new black Scout battle uniform armed with Thunder Spears and metal protections.

Personality[]

Before the Battle of Shiganshina District, Floch starts off as a young, hopeful new recruit of the Survey Corps. In the midst of the battle, while Commander Erwin and his troops, including Floch, are trapped by the Beast Titan and being approached from behind by Bertolt's Colossal Titan, he displays his lack of confidence and his cowardice, even questioning Erwin’s will to go on a suicide charge against the Beast.

Traumatized by the battle and by the charge which he is the sole survivor from, Floch begins to believe in necessary evil and develops the idea that humanity needs a devil to guide them, someone who is able to do whatever it costs and to sacrifice everything to achieve their goals. This gives him much more confidence and, for this reason, he believes that Erwin should have been saved over Armin. Later on, he chooses to follow Eren as his designated devil and begins to show his fascination for him. Floch also displays several times how marked he was by the battle, reminding Jean of how they survived “that” four years ago and how nothing worse could possibly happen.

After Erwin’s death and Armin’s revival as the wielder of the Colossal Titan's power, Floch becomes resentful toward Armin as well as Levi, blaming the latter for following his feelings rather than the interests of humanity within the Walls.

As the years go by, Floch turns increasingly radical as well as violent, displaying vindictive and psychopathic tendencies, brushing aside the numerous civilian casualties caused in Marley as he believed all of the nation's people to be enemies responsible for his and his people's suffering. He becomes ready to do anything for the sake of his nation, conspiring with and backing up Eren’s plan of committing global genocide for what he believed would achieve Paradis Island's long-term survival. Floch does not hesitate to brutally kill or attempt to kill those who oppose him be his enemies, former comrades, or allies, and takes a sadistic pleasure in revealing to Hange that he knew all along about the plan to serve Zeke’s spinal fluid to the Eldian military's high-ranking officers, as well as gleefully taunting Kiyomi Azumabito and the Anti-Marleyan Volunteers on their soon to be destroyed countries via the Rumbling. His nationalistic views and pride in Eldia’s supremacy lead him to extreme measures; such as holding public executions for any Volunteers that don't submit to the "New Eldian Empire", being complicit in Darius Zackly's murder as means of preventing Eren from being fed to a military approved Titan and even forcing 109th Training Corps cadets to beat their instructor Shadis until he can no longer stand or face imprisonment.

Ever since his experience in the Battle for Shiganshina District, Floch adopted a philosophy of "freedom under controlled submission" if it means staying staying alive, going as far as to tell the Anti-Marleyan Volunteers (after killing one in front of them) that it would be better to live by submit to Eldia rather than die with pride. However, he is willing to sacrifice his own life for Eldia and Eren by extension if necessary, believing in the event that Eren dies all of Paradis would be annihilated from the world's retaliation. During the battle against the alliance between Marley and the Survey Corps, where he fights on the frontlines along with his Yeagerist comrades, he risks his life to try to take down the Azumabito boat carrying the flying boat even going so far as to cling to the boat with his ODM gear for two days just for the chance to shoot holes in the flying boat's tank at Odiha in Marley. Before he passed on from his injuries he spent his last moments begging his enemies to not kill Eren due to him being their only hope for Eldia's survival,

Abilities[]

  • Indomitable Will: Floch is an extremely determined individual who always gives his best to fulfill his objectives. Despite his terror, he agrees to take part in Commander Erwin’s charge against the Beast Titan during the Battle of Shiganshina District. In the aftermath of the battle, he tries to prevent Eren and Mikasa from giving the Titan serum to Armin even though he is unarmed against a much more skilled Mikasa. He doesn’t hesitate to resort to insubordination if it means being loyal to Eren and to his own nationalistic views. During the battle in Shiganshina between the Eldians and the Marleyans seeking revenge for Liberio and to seize the Founder, Floch takes on the Cart Titan, General Magath, Koslow, and two other soldiers by himself with only two small teams of comrades and comes back alive, even though he almost dies from the Walls crumbling when the Rumbling is about to begin. In the climax of the battle against the coalition between the Scouts and the Marley soldiers, and while the Yeagerists have suffered many losses, Floch evades every attack and still attempts to aim for the Azumabito's boat to prevent Eren from being killed. Even though he fails because of Gabi shooting him in the shoulder down into the sea, he clings to the boat all the way to Odiha and tries one last time to shoot down either the airplane or Hizuru's technicians, eventually dying in the process.
  • Keen Intellect: Despite his brutality, Floch is able to develop strategies and trick many characters along the way. Following Eren’s plan, he keeps to himself what the latter told him and pretends to serve Zeke and Yelena’s interests instead of Eldia’s. He leaks the fact that Eren was imprisoned after the Raid on Liberio, prompting the people of Eldia to riot in support of Eren. He devises a plot to assassinate Premier Zachary and he subsequently gathers and leads the Yeagerists, enabling him to arrest the rest of the Survey Corps with no resistance from Commander Pixis and giving him de facto control over the Walls of Paradis, due to almost the entire military brass having been marked by wine tainted with Zeke's spinal fluid, that was previously distributed by Yelena and served by Marleyan captives, as well as Floch's comrades and coerced allies within the military holding Pixis and the other leaders at gunpoint. He is also a good observer and deducer, as he understands pretty quickly that Armin and Connie are lying and betraying Eldia when they claim to have been chasing the Cart Titan and the Armored Titan on horseback instead of using the railroad.
  • Charisma and Public Speaking: Using his experience and notoriety as one of the few survivors of the Battle of Shiganshina District, Floch starts rallying followers of Eren during 853, and quickly establishes himself as their leader. By 854, the dissatisfied group desert the Eldian military and become labeled as the Yeagerists. With his group, Floch organizes Dhalis Zachary’s assassination, to show the military their resolve. He manages to talk some Training Corps cadets into beating Commandant Keith Shadis to a pulp (even though they were encouraged by Shadis himself so that they are considered loyal by the rest of the Yeagerists). After Eren starts the Rumbling, he then stirs up his soldiers’ nationalism with another speech on the "rebirth of the New Eldian Empire", solidifying his position as the leader of the Yeagerists, and he obtains full support in executing Yelena and Onyankopon for their so-called treason. During the battle between the Yeagerists and the coalition between Marley and the Survey Corps renegades wanting to stop Eren and the Rumbling, Floch delivers a final speech in order to exhort his men to fight for the survival of Eldia.
  • 3D Maneuvering Skills: His years of experience within the Survey Corps enabled Floch to develop his skills with the ODM gear. When he is held down onto the floor by Kiyomi Azumabito, Floch manages to break free by propelling himself through a window. During the ensuing battle, he successfully evades Falco Grice’s Jaw Titan, Hange Zoë and Pieck Finger’s Cart Titan and, aiming for Hizuru's boat, he thrusts himself into the air above it, though he fails to sink it due to Gabi Braun’s intervention.

Victims[]

Killed[]

  • Several Marleyan soldiers
  • One Anti-Marleyan Volunteer
  • At least three Azumabito guards (presumably also one female Hizuru ambassador)

Trivia[]

  • The name "Floch" comes from the Breton which means "young boy".
  • Hajime Isayama has claimed that he did not initially plan for Floch to become a prominent character or for any character to fill a role such as his. However, he came to feel that Floch was necessary to act as a voice of opposition against the main characters.
