The story of Floch Forster from Attack on Titan.
Past[]
Floch joined the military within the Walls during the year 847 and was part of the 104th Training Corps. He is only briefly seen once during one of Reiner Braun's flashbacks of the training days; as Reiner tries to stop Eren Yeager and Jean Kirstein from fighting, the annoyed Floch shouts at the two to quit it, as he wants to eat his breakfast in peace. After graduating in 850, he presumably was part of the Battle of Trost District. After the battle, he joined the Garrison where he served for four months.
Joining the Survey Corps[]
After or between two months after the uprising within the Walls, several members of the Garrison, including Floch, joined the Survey Corps as urgent recruits due to the Corps' lack of numbers. When the Survey Corps prepare their journey to Shiganshina District in order to retake Wall Maria, Floch speaks to his old classmates, who became the "veterans" of the Survey Corps, who along with Floch were part of the 104th Training Corps as well. Given that they fought several battles with Titans in the meanwhile and suffered many losses, Floch is shocked to see how much these people changed. During the Scouts red meat dinner, Floch briefly stopped by Eren's table to chat with his comrade Marlowe.
Battle of Shiganshina District[]
When the Survey Corps reaches Shiganshina, Floch and other new recruits are put in charge of taking care of the horses, causing them to remain in the destroyed village outside of Shiganshina on the inside of Wall Maria. However, suddenly the Beast Titan appears with several smaller Titans, cutting off the way back to Wall Rose. While most of the Survey Corps is dealing with the Armored Titan and the Colossus Titan inside Shiganshina, the Beast Titan starts hurling stones and boulders at Levis Team, wiping them out and causing Levi to retreat back to Floch and the others, who are panicking. In his fear, Floch lets go of the horses, having realized that they are trapped and that there is no way of escaping and that they will all die a pointless death.
Eventually, Commander Erwin and Levi come up with a plan to kill the Beast Titan - while Erwin and the rest of the new recruits will ride a suicide attack by riding at the Beast Titan frontally, Levi will sneak up to him from the side and use the Titan's focus on Erwin's group to deal the killing blow. Floch is horrified to hear this and asks if Erwin expects them to fight if they are all going to die anyways. Erwin confirms this and tells them, that it is their duty to fight for humanity and to give meaning to the deaths of all other soldiers, who came before them. Accordingly, the suicide charge is formed and Erwin leads his recruits into battle by frontally storming at the Beast Titan, who kills most of them with the first barrage of projectile he is throwing at them. While Erwin is the first to fall, all other recruits are killed by the Beast Titan's projectiles as well.
After Levi has attacked the Beast Titan and has defeated him successfully, Floch rises from the field, being the only survivor of the suicide charge. Horrified, he walks through the bodies of his fallen comrades and desperately searches for other survivors, eventually finding the mortally wounded but still breathing Erwin. He grabs the commander and carries him back to the Wall, where he finds Levi, Eren and Mikasa standing over the mortally wounded Armin, who has been hurt during the fight against the Colossus Titan. Levi is about to inject Armin with the serum syringe so that he can eat Bertolt and become an Intelligent Titan, but Floch informs Levi that Erwin has survived and should be the one to receive the saving injection. As Eren and Mikasa are unwilling to let their friend Armin die, a heated dispute erupts during which Floch claims that only a man like Erwin can lead humanity to victory against the Titans. As Levi is about to make his choice, Floch forcibly restrains Eren and moves him to another rooftop whilst Hange takes Mikasa.
From the rooftop, the group watches as Levi injects Armin with the infusion, choosing his life over Erwin's. After the group has gone to the Yeager basement and has found the truth about the world, the sole nine survivors of the Survey Corps return to Shiganshina, where there is to be a ceremony in their honor. Moments before the ceremony starts, Floch bitterly reveals to Hitch Dreyse that in his final moments, Marlowe remained brave and calm but that he must have regretted his final actions anyway. When the angry Jean demands to know why Floch would say that, Floch responds that someone must speak the truth about what happened. He also angrily states that every sane person would have chosen Erwin over Armin; stating that Eren, Mikasa, and Levi let their personal feelings overwhelm them and that saving Erwin would have been the rational choice. He commends Mikasa for surrendering to the logical choice in the end while calling Eren childish and irrational.
One year later in 851, Floch and his Scout comrades discover Marley's infamous wharf on Paradis Island's southern borders and witness the ocean for the first time.
Alliance with Zeke and Yelena[]
Through the same year and the following two years, Paradis Island - now also known as the nation of Eldia - takes less than 4,600 prisoners by sinking ships from Marley's scouting fleet, also capturing a single cruiser. The first ship from 851 was filled with soldiers who surprisingly deserted the Marleyan military and claimed that, by the orders of Zeke Yeager, they want to free the people of Eldia. The deserters, known as the Anti-Marleyan Volunteers, help the island to develop its technology, build its sole naval port, build trains and railroads, bring modern standard Marleyan guns and better technology to improve the design of a new anti-personnel 3DMG gear, from which Floch will benefit in the following years. In 852, Zeke also arranges a meeting between envoys of the Azumabito family and Queen Historia and Mikasa in order to strike an alliance between the nations of Eldia and Hizuru.
In 853, prior an imminent Survey Corps infiltration mission to Marley and during a banquet ceremony of the rail system at Trost District, Floch is tasked with guarding the Volunteer leader Yelena, who somehow convinces him to arrange a meeting with Eren Yeager and herself. During the meeting, Yelena reveals some groundbreaking information to Eren, causing a radical personality change in him. Floch hears Yelena revealing that Zeke plans to sterilize all the Subjects of Ymir in the world in order to save humanity. Later Eren tells Floch that both of them will pretend to support Zeke's plan, as they do not stand any chance against the world without him and his Volunteers. Eren confides to Floch his secret plan; he is going to use the power of the Founding Titan to start a full-scale Rumbling that will destroy the entire world and mankind outside Paradis Island, much to Floch's shock. Eren allies himself with his half-brother Zeke, Yelena, and Floch. On Eren's wishes, Floch starts to rally support for him from other members of the military dissatisfied with their administration to join Eren's side - becoming the first group who will form the splinter group that will be known as Yeagerists one year later.
Floch and Eren learn from Yelena about Zeke's plan to push Marley to declare war on Paradis Island as soon as the Marley Mid-East War will end, instead of letting them postpone the invasion in future years. Zeke, who is currently still fighting in the Mid-East of the continent, hopes that Marley will propose to all the world's nations, especially the major ones, to form an alliance together so that they can gather their navies to assault Paradis. Zeke wants Eren to prove Marley's point about the threat of Paradis to the other countries, which is by initiating an assault in Zeke's own hometown Liberio, which is located in an area with high military activity and hosts the Marley Navy's primary military ports. After their raid on Liberio, Eren and Zeke will give the world one month to organize their retaliation in order to gather their fleets at Marley's second main north-eastern military ports at Karifa. Eren and Zeke will make contact then, sterilize all the Subjects of Ymir, and finally initiate a small-scale Rumbling with the Wall Titans of Shiganshina District to crush the nations' fleet to show the world the might of the Rumbling and make the major nations face financial collapse in order to leave Paradis alone for at least 50 years, whilst the Founding and Beast Titans will be passed on until all the Eldians will go extinct by natural causes after a century. Floch hears Yelena admitting that she is personally worried about Marley's development of flying boats and airplanes, however, which might be able to destroy the Rumbling.
Ten months later, Floch is among the soldiers dispatched in Marley by Commander Hange Zoe to retrieve Eren Yeager in the Liberio internment zone before he can cause chaos during Willy Tybur's theater production and speech for global peace and stability. Hange and the rest of the Survey Corps are unaware that both Floch and Yelena are working with Zeke and Eren and supporting their intentions, although Yelena is a suspect. Eren initiates an attack on the Liberio internment zone and when the Survey Corps come to save them, Floch uses explosives initially intended for abandoned buildings occupied by enemy soldiers to destroy buildings that might have been full of civilians, as what he sees as payback for the countless deaths Marley's Titans caused to Paradis' Walls. When he is confronted by Jean for this action, he is unrepentant and instead claims that Eren is the only one who understands that they have to fight their enemies. As Zeke and Eren wanted, Armin uses the Colossal Titan to destroy Marley's primary military ports, also destroying most of Marley's primary naval fleet that was dispatched to join the fight and close the ports. Zeke uses the raid to join the Survey Corps during the retreat back to Paradis.
After the attack is over and the Survey Corps flees on a Marleyan airship stolen by the Volunteer Onyankopon, Floch and other supporters of Eren celebrate the first victory of the "New Eldian Empire". In their celebration, they do not realize that two child soldiers of the Marley Warrior Program, Gabi and Falco, have boarded the airship. Gabi is able to shoot Sasha Blouse and kills her, before Floch and his comrades swarm the children and grab them. Floch finds out that they also killed his comrade Lobov and used his 3DMG gear to board the airship. He plans to throw them out of the airship mid-air, but Jean forbids it, claiming that it would have no purpose to kill the children.
Yeagerists[]
After the airship returns to Paradis Island, Captain Levi and 30 loyal Survey Corps take custody of Zeke to escort him on a secret location known only by them and Commander Hange, while Commander Dot Pixis puts all the Volunteers on house arrest to use them, as well as Gabi and Falco, as hostages for Zeke's good behavior. However, Eren is also not allowed to be free and is imprisoned at Trost District's military headquarters for his attack on Liberio. This causes Floch and other supporters of Eren in the military - Holger, Wim and Louise - to leak the news about Eren's imprisonment to the public, causing massive protests at Trost. After Hange discovers what Floch and the others have done, she demands an explanation but Floch calmly claims that Eren has nothing wrong and that his actions saved the people of Paradis. He claims that the "New Eldian Empire" is safe as long as the Founding Titan remains with Eren and wants Hange to allow Eren and Zeke Yeager to make contact and start what is supposed to be the planned small-scale Rumbling to crush the naval forces of the Global Alliance assembling at Marley. Hange refuses to carry on with the plan for the time being and then orders Floch, Holger, Wim and Louise to be arrested, as they await for their trial at the court-martial. Meanwhile, the envoy Kiyomi Azumabito returns to Paradis from Marley with a small group of engineers sent by Hizuru's government to bring their new flying boat fueled with iceburst stone, which is to be used to witness Zeke and Eren's small Rumbling.
However, a month since the Raid on Liberio, a group of Eren's supporters murder their own leader of state and military, Premier Darius Zackly, by placing a bomb in his office, also killing three officers of the Military Police Brigade. This is done as a precaution to prevent the military from feeding Eren to a new Titan loyal to the military. Floch and his allies were informed by spies hiding within the Military Police and the Garrison that Zackly and the other government leaders, including Commanders Dot Pixis and Nile Dok, decided to have Eren fed to a new Titan with the serum from Marley that they received from the Volunteers, all without informing the Survey Corps, who are too close to Eren. This provoked Floch's group, who immediately decided to desert the military and kill Zackly as a show of their resolve to the military government.
After the bomb attack at the headquarters, the military leaders are busy investigating the Premier's murder and if the Volunteers are involved. Meanwhile, jail guards of the MP and Garrison free Floch, Holger, Wim and Louise from their cells at Trost and escape together, whilst Eren escapes on his own with the power of the War Hammer Titan. Floch and some of his followers desert the military and rendezvous with Eren somewhere outside the city, where Floch informs him that they took precautions to prevent the military from feeding him to a new Titan by assassinating Premier Zackly. Floch also tells Eren that they have more allies hiding within all the three branches, including those who killed the Premier and declares that Eren is the only person who can save Eldia from the rest of humanity.
Floch and Eren's group of insurgents is named 'the Yeagerists' by the military. Their intentions are clear; they want to reform the entire obsolete military system into a new united Eldian army and place Eren on top as the leader of Eldia, because they think that his Titan power is the only way of saving the nation, which is by waging war on Marley and any other nations who wish to destroy their island. They now plan to discover Zeke's location in order to have him and Eren make contact to obtain the full power of the Founder. Dot Pixis hastily becomes Zackly's successor and takes the leadership of the nation and government administration; he plans to use Zeke's secret location to negotiate an alliance with the Yeagerists. With the island's people being divided and the government facing possible collapse, Kiyomi quickly leaves the Walls to retreat back to Paradis' harbor with the rest of her entourage from Hizuru, where their boat and flying boat are anchored.
Pixis' offer reaches Eren, who tells Floch and the other Yeagerists to sent a refusal as a reply; they will not negotiate with the military, because Pixis will never entrust the fate of the island to them. Furthermore, the Yeagerists hiding within the Garrison reveal to Floch and Eren that Pixis is actually planning to have Eren killed by surprise to steal the Founder, although they do not know the details of such plan (Pixis wants Levi to ambush Eren and feed him to another Titan, while he is on his way to meet Zeke). The Yeagerists are tipped off to Hange's team by the Marleyan POW Griez, who is working as a spy for Yelena. This leads Floch, Eren, and their accomplices to Griez and Niccolo's restaurant where they forcefully apprehend Hange, Armin, Mikasa, Jean, Connie, the Blouse Family as well as Gabi and Falco. Onyankopon is also found and held at gunpoint, but acknowledged as an ally shortly afterwards. Except for Mikasa, Armin and Gabi who join later, Floch takes them all prisoner, but Hange warns him that they discovered that Zeke might have spiked with his own spinal fluid the Marleyan wine that has been served to Paradis' military by the Marleyan captives from the scouting ships - giving Zeke the power to turn everyone who drank it; mostly high-ranking military personnel; into Titans. Floch, however implies that he knew about this all along and that he just went along with Zeke and Yelena's plan, meaning the Yeagerists are now working with them. He smugly tells Hange to be quiet and then has all of them arrested and taken to Shiganshina District.
In Shiganshina, Floch has most of Eren's prisoners put in cells, whilst Eren takes Gabi with him separately. However, he takes Hange along when he and his followers storm the training grounds where Keith Shadis is currently training the 109th Training Corps. Floch shouts that the unit is now under his command and holds a passionate speech in which he tells the trainees that they have to take their future into their own hands and that they need to fight for the survival of Eldia rather than clinging to the past and old traditions, like Shadis does. When the trainees agree to join him, Floch demands that they brutally beat up Shadis until he can no longer stand. After the violent initiation is done, Floch admits all of them to the Yeagerist faction before ordering Hange to take him to the place where Zeke Yeager is currently being held prisoner.
When they reach the outskirts of the forest, they find the remains of an explosion next to a lifeless Titan. Searching the surrounding area, Hange finds the severely wounded Levi, who has been hit by the explosion. Floch is content, as Levi was a severe threat to them and wants to make sure Levi is indeed dead. Before he can do so, however, Zeke Yeager suddenly emerges from the lifeless Titan, having been reborn. Hanji uses the distraction to her advantage, grabs Levi and jumps into the river with him in order to escape the Yeagerists. While some of the Yeagerists ride after them, Floch approaches Zeke and asks him what happened. Zeke replies that he is not sure himself, but makes clear that everybody who stood in their way is gone and that the time to advance has come.
While Floch is gone, all the Anti-Marleyan Volunteers are released from their house arrest and take over Shiganshina, under Yelena's rule on Zeke and Eren's behalf, while the Yeagerists control the military. Commander Pixis is forced to comply to their demands and orders all the main military forces of the island to surrender.
Eren's True Plan[]
Floch and the other Yeagerists return to Shiganshina with Zeke just in time to find the district in pure chaos - Marley has invaded Paradis once more and its Warriors are mid-battle with Eren in his Titan form, whilst the Marley Army and Marley Air Force fight the Yeagerists and the Eldian military. While Zeke heads toward the wall to defend his brother, Floch and his group gear up to attack and kill the Cart Titan and her unit of soldiers, who are directly led by the head of the Marleyan military General Magath. While their attack succeeds in driving off the Titan, the Yeagerists are tricked by Pieck after they split up in order to attack the Cart Titan from both sides. As Pieck fakes her death and the Yeagerists remain wondering who of them dealt the killing blow, Marleyan soldiers emerge from the steam of the Titan's carcass and open fire on Floch's group. As the only survivor of his group, Floch is later joined by Armin and Mikasa in fighting the Cart Titan and all of them are completely shocked when the wall underneath them breaks apart, revealing the Colossal Titans buried inside.
Later, Floch reappears and restrains Yelena and the other Volunteers, offering them a place among the people of Paradis while also casually revealing that all of their homelands will be destroyed during the Rumbling. When one of the Volunteers spitefully screams that they will not surrender to him, Floch mercilessly executes him while commending the man for staying true to his beliefs to the very end. To the confused Jean and the rest of the soldiers, Floch then reveals that this - including the capture of the Volunteers - has been the true goal of Eren all along and that while he is bringing peace to the earth, Floch is the one to bring peace to Paradis, even if it includes eliminating all think differently. Smiling, Floch kneels down next to Jean and happily tells him that Jean can relax, since he is a war hero and due to Floch, Paradis is finally at peace.
Jean apparently submits and Floch now intends to execute both Yelena and Onyankopon. However, while he attempts to do so, the Cart Titan suddenly barges in and hurls itself towards Floch. Jean pushes him out of the way, causing Jean, Yelena and Onyankopon to be eaten. In truth, the Cart Titan did not swallow them and merely intends to take them away to the rest of their comrades so they can make preparations to stop Eren and the Rumbling. Sensing that something is wrong, Floch mobilizes the Yeagerists and uses the railway system to take over the harbor of Paradis Island where the Azumabito flying boat – the only way of reaching Eren in time – is stored. After his arrival, Floch apprehends Kiyomi Azumabito and her engineers to prevent them from preparing the flying boat. About a day later, Floch is surprised when Armin and Connie ride into the area, loudly screaming that they immediately need to ready the flying boat to hunt down the Armored and Cart Titans, who are apparently swimming back to Marley. Floch is sceptical and while he cannot see any immediate lies, he decides to execute Kiyomi and her engineers as a precaution.
Before he can do so, though, Kiyomi suddenly jumps up and disarms Floch. At the same moment, Mikasa barges into the room and kills the remaining Yeagerists present, causing Floch to use his 3D Manoeuver Gear to hurl himself out of the window and furiously announce to his Yeagerists that they have been betrayed and that all intruders – including Armin, Connie and Mikasa – are to be killed immediately. A brutal battle breaks out in which Reiner and Annie transform into their Titan forms and attack the Yeagerists. Desperately, the Yeagerists attempt to find a way to kill Kiyomi and the engineers since killing them would prevent the enemies from catching up to Eren. However, they fail and suddenly, Floch realizes that the group does not intend to use the flying boat immediately; instead they want to flee to the continent via boat and prepare the flying boat there in peace. In a final attempt, Floch blasts into the air to fire his last Thunderspear at the boat's hull, but is shot in the shoulder by Gabi Braun, which causes him to miss his shot and fall into the water.
Death[]
Thought to have been killed by Gabi's bullet, Floch appears again chapter 132. He not only survived Gabi's sniping shot, but with determination managed to cling onto the ship that the Marleyans, the Survey Corps' rebels, and their Hizuru allies sailed with for several days in spite of his wound. Just after the allies finished servicing the flying boat at a hangar owned by the Azumabito in the Marleyan city of Odiha, and were about to fly their airplane, Floch shoots several shots into the airplane's fuel tank, damaging it and rendering the airplane inoperable. Mikasa, upon seeing Floch, immediately shoots wire harpoon from her 3D maneuver gear into Floch's throat, piercing and mortally wounding him. Even as dying, Floch expresses his firm belief that Eren is Paradis' only hope and futilely begs rebels to stop their attempt to undermine Eren.
Soon after Floch breathed his last, Rumbling was heard and Wall Titans came to Odiha, approaching the hangar and giving the rebels, the Marleyans and the Hizuru crew practically no time to repair the airplane. But Hange Zoe volunteers on a suicide mission in a bid to slow down advancing Titans and buy the allies the time they needed to repair the airplanes. And thanks to Hange's sacrifice, the allies are able to repair the airplane and escape the oncoming Titans, allowing them to eventually reach Eren at the Marleyan military base of Fort Salta - making Floch's final costly assault in vain.
As extreme and amoral as Floch was, he in the end cherished his home country so much so that he gave his all to protect it. That drive to protect his home would pay off, as the Yeagerists would later successfully rebuild their military strength and, with some exceptions, unite all the people of Paradis against the remains of the outside world, believing they would eventually retaliate against them for the Rumbling, so although Floch did not live to see it, his vision for a stronger Paradis ended up coming true. Unfortunately, generations later, Paradis was destroyed in another conflict, leaving only one known survivor and Eren and Floch's actions truly in vain.
