~ Epps during the standoff

Floyd Epps is the main antagonist of the 1989 film Night Game. Epps is a disgraced baseball pitcher and a serial killer of women as a revenge campaign against his rival, Silvio Baretto, the pitcher who replaced him.

He's portrayed by Rex Linn.

Biography[]

Epps was born in Marshall, Texas, and a star pitcher for the Houston Astros, until Sil was meant to take his place and Epps was to be transferred to another team. On the bus he took during his trip to his new team, he lost his left hand when the bus crashed into a semi-truck. Wearing a hook hand from then on, Epps' career was over, and he blamed Sil for everything. As Sil grew more successful and popular with his tenure on the team, Epps swore revenge to take Sil's publicity away from him. Every night Sil scored a successful pitch, Epps killed a woman by slashing her throat with his sharpened hook hand, hoping the women's murders would get more public attention. As Sil's wife Cindy was blond, each woman Epps killed was also blond to add to his harassment campaign through the murders.

After killing Denise Dickson and Kimmy Martinez, Epps slashed the throat of Loretta Akers, a sex worker, leaving "Best of Luck" in a note on her garter belt. When Epps sees Lieutenant Mike Seaver, who retired from the Minor League, on the case, Epps sees him as a rival as well. Epps kills Lorraine Beasley and Beverly Wakely at a seaside carnival, writing "Best of Luck" on a funhouse mirror in their blood. It's revealed to be a threat to Seaver, as his fiance Roxy works there. he then kills Beverly Jo Hansen at the beach. Seaver attends an Astora game, where he hears about Epps' history and realizes he's the killer, as his left hand was his dominant one he had his hook on, but he wrote with his right hand.

While Seavers rushes back to Galveston, where Roxy's working, Epps sit next to her for drinks. When she sees his fury from Sil winning another game, then leers at her in a preparation to kill her, Roxy leaves the bar. Epps corners her and takes her hostage, but Seaver arrives to stop him from killing Roxy. Roxy breaks out of Epps' grasp, and he and Seaver fight, which culminates in Seaver shooting Epps dead. Epps plummets off the pier they're on into the ocean.
