“ | Boss Salmonid: Flyfish
This glorified mosquito flies through the air in an ink-powered aircraft, launching missile barrages. Toss a bomb into both of its missile launchers to take it down from the inside out. |

~ Mr. Grizz describing a Flyfish |
The Flyfishes are supporting antagonists in the Splatoon series, being major antagonists in Splatoon 2 and Splatoon 3's Salmon Run and Salmon Run: Next Wave game modes. They are Smallfries who, for their intelligence and skill, have been selected to become pilots of specialised hovercrafts, being promoted to Boss Salmonids.
Appearance[]
Flyfishes are regular Smallfries piloting white hovercrafts with dark grey windshields. The missile launchers they wield appear similar to blue and red-lidded drink coolers/trash cans, except with high-tech wiring inside. The missiles they shoot also appear to be metal soda bottles similar to the Tenta Missile special they mimic.
Gameplay[]
Behaviour[]
Like all Boss Salmonids, Flyfish spawn randomly at any Boss Salmonid appearance during almost all circumstances, sans certain special occurrences. They fly about using an ink jetpack which splats all underneath, and when they are about to attack they fly lower to the ground, releasing 4 missiles per launcher that home in on players, one-shotting any who are hit. They are completely invulnerable to any non-piercing ink attacks, with the only normal way to damage them being throwing bombs into their launchers before they fire.
Strategy[]
With their nigh-invulnerability, high range and damage, and admittedly annoying way of defeating them, Flyfish are priority targets in any wave of a game, with it being recommended that at least 2 players go over to deal with one whenever they appear. When tackling a Flyfish, play close attention to the launcher your ally is throwing a bomb in or at least throw your bomb into the launcher you're standing in front of, as if you miss, you won't get a chance to hit again until the Flyfish fires off its next round of missiles. Should you somehow get splatted and fall in a launcher, stay in the launcher as your lifesaver will catch your teammate's bombs when they fire, ensuring the Flyfish are hit and reviving you. Finally, the Crab Tank, Explosher and Ink Cannons fire "bomb type" projectiles which will similarly destroy the Flyfish's launchers, while any piercing supers/weapons will also deal with its launchers.
Touching a Flyfish and its ink jet will deal massive amounts of damage, so it's advised for one to find high ground when dealing with one and for those with levitating/mobile specials to be mindful of where they execute it. Flyfish missiles also deal splash damage and as such, one being targeted by them should avoid going into areas where eggs are being delivered. As the number of Boss Salmonids on the stage dictates how often more spawn, a viable strategy is to only bomb one of the Flyfish's launchers, crippling it and reducing the spawn rate. Once crippled, Flyfishes can only shoot 4 missiles and target the nearest player, making them less of a hassle to deal with.
Trivia[]
- The Flyfish's launchers target players differently, with the red one targeting the closest player and the blue one selecting a random player.
- In Splatoon 2, Flyfishes were the only Boss Salmonid that didn't emerge from the water, instead fading into view. This was changed in Splatoon 3 where they use their hovercraft to rise out of the water.
- Along with the Maws, the Flyfish is the only Boss Salmonid to be addressed with a gender as Mr. Grizz calls it "him".
- The hovercrafts the Flyfishes pilot are apparently made of Octarian technology, presumably purchased from their trade deals like the Slammin' Lid's UFO. It's said only elite Smallfry are selected and trained to pilot these hovercrafts.
