| ~ Fomortiis in Fire Emblem Heroes whilst possessing Lyon. |
Fomortiis, also named Fodeth in Japanese, is a major antagonist in the Fire Emblem franchise. He is the main antagonist of Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones and minor antagonist in both Fire Emblem Heroes and Fire Emblem Engage. He is Eirika and Ephraim's archenemy.
He is voiced by Yuichi Nakamura in Japanese and by Mark P. Whitten in English, both of whom also voiced Lyon.
Biography[]
Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones[]
Fomortiis is an ancient Demon King in the continent of Magvel, who was sealed by the Five Heroes in Year 3, using the Sacred Stones. Among them, the stone of Grado held the spirit of Fomortiis.
Eight-hundred years later in year 803, Vigarde, the Emperor of Grado, died. In despair, his son Lyon then tried to bring Vigard back to life using the power of the Sacred Stones. Lyon succeeds, but in the process got him influenced by the demon.
The degree of influence depends on the route chose by players:
- In Eirika's route, Fomortiis would possess Lyon's body directly and mind control the prince against his will.
- In Ephraim's route, Fomortiis would manipulate Lyon's darkest feelings and emotions to corrupt and negatively influence him.
Using Lyon as his pawn, Fomortiis had Lyon resurrect Emperor Vigarde as his undead servant. He then began using Lyon to control the resurrected Vigarde, both as his pawns to invade neighboring nations beginning with Renais, in order to destroy the Sacred Stones of the other countries that have sealed the rest of his body away.
After Lyon's death, Formortiis managed to resurrect himself and directly fought Ephraim, Eirika and their allies, but was eventually slain by their combined effort. After Fomortiis' defeat, the two sealed his soul in Sacred Stone of Rausten before they destroyed his body, ensuring that he will never ever return again.
Fire Emblem Engage[]
Formortiis makes a cameo during the final battle against Lord Sombron as a Dark Emblem. If Eirika fights him, she realizes that he is the Demon King due to sensing his miasma of evil. She'd determined to defeat Formortiis before he beguiles anyone or causes a tragedy, referencing what he did to Lyon.
Formortiis is also subtly referenced in Eirika's paralogue, The Azure Twin. It was based on the final battle against him in the Black Temple.

Trivia[]
- Fomortiis is the first and, so far, only main antagonist and final boss of a Fire Emblem series game that is a demon.
- While he's referred to with male pronouns in the game and called "Demon King", his Fire Emblem Cipher card doesn't list his gender, which implies he's genderless.
