The Forever Train Engineer is a minor antagonist in Star Fox series. He serves as a boss in Star Fox 64 on the planet Macbeth, where he transports important supplies to the supply depot where they would then be taken to Venom, using the Forever Train as his source of transportation. He is a lieutenant who serves alongside Andross' forces.
Personality[]
The Forever Train is known for being arrogant and condescending towards his foes, referring to them as "hyenas" and noting when they don't seem to take him seriously. He is quite a determinator and will stop at nothing to get as much of his cargo to his destination as possible, as seen when he reluctantly detaches a rear vehicle when it becomes immobile.
His ignorance led to him not only underestimating Star Fox, but also became his ultimate downfall, as he ended up accelerating his train to dangerously high speeds to stay ahead of Fox's landmaster, not thinking of the possibility that the team would actually change the train tracks, leading to an important outpost. It appears that he has some sort of command over the weapons factory as it was believed that he had given orders to close the bars to slow the Landmaster's progress.
He also appears to not be driving the train himself and instead commands a crew, as he barks orders to detach vehicles, speed the train up and hit the brakes.
Biography[]
Fox McCloud and his squadron arrive on Macbeth with the mission of taking out an important enemy base there, which would significantly cripple the Venom war industry in their favor. The Star Fox leader would then use the Landmaster to get closer to the railroad. The Engineer notices them, drops the boulders in Fox's way to slow him down and then speeds up to avoid him. Fox takes out aerial forces that back up the engineer while taking out the Forever Train's freight cars. Halfway through the level, the frustrated engineer detaches the rear vehicle since the train stopped during connection.
Falco Lombardi eventually notifies Fox about the fuel bunker on the right side, while Peppy Hare advises Fox to shoot the eight switches to change the rail points. With all the freight cars destroyed, the Forever Train Engineer's only option left is to use Mechbeth against Fox. As the fight goes on, the engineer calls for the train to go faster in order to prevent Fox from hiding from Mechbeth in front of the train.
If Fox misses one of the eight switches or the switcher itself, the battle continues like normal, and he must deal with Mechbeth and deplete its health, causing it to loose altitude and crash onto the train, blowing it up and killing the engineer. However, this would force the team to head to Bolse at the end.
If Fox is successful in activating the eight switches, the rails ahead of the train are rerouted to the fuel bunker. Realizing what has happened, the engineer slams on the brakes, but is unable to stop the train due to the sheer speed he'd built up from constantly accelerating throughout the fight. Panicking, the engineer crashes through the buffers and drives full-speed into the fuel bunker, destroying the train and outpost and killing him; this course of action allows Star Fox access to Area 6. Regardless of how the player chooses to defeat him, it always ends with the train's destruction and its engineer meeting a violent end.
Trivia[]
- The Forever Train Engineer's voice tone when saying "You're very lucky!" is different between the original game and its 3DS remake. While the tone in the original sounds low and intimidating, in the remake, it sounds more like the engineer is smugly taunting Fox.
