Foxy the Pirate is a major antagonist of the 2023 supernatural horror film Five Nights at Freddy's, the film adaptation of the popular video game franchise of the same name.
He is a tattered animatronic pirate-themed red fox who is the pirate entertainer of Freddy Fazbear's Pizza. One of the pizzeria's four main attractions, it is revealed that he and his friends come to life by the spirits of ghost children at nighttime and kill anybody that comes after hours, including night guards that may be working.
He was portrayed through puppetry by Russ Walko and voiced by Kellen Goff as an animatronic, who also played Funtime/Molten Freddy, Fredbear and Glamrock Freddy in the same franchise, Kai Chisaki in My Hero Academia, Fiddlesticks in League of Legends, Hans in Konosuba, Diavolo in JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Golden Wind, Rekka Hoshimiya in Fire Force, Zagred in Black Clover, Father Spider Demon in Demon Slayer, and Techno Pirate in Miraculous: Tales of Ladybug & Cat Noir. As a ghost child, he was portrayed by Asher Colton Spence.
Appearance[]
Just like his video game incarnation, Foxy is a tall, anthropomorphic, slender, tattered animatronic pirate-themed red fox with an eye patch over his right eye and a sharp hook for his right hand, though there are minor differences. His shorts are real rather than just brown-colored suit parts while his eyepatch is duct taped to the back of his head. Like his video game counterpart, he is shown to have a damaged appearance unlike the other animatronics as parts of his machinery are exposed. Both his legs and left hand are completely bare which exposes the metal endoskeleton underneath while his chest is ripped in various places which shows his endoskeleton beneath and even both his arms and stomach are torn apart. When acting in a hostile manner, his eyes glow orange while under the influence of William Afton. However, his eyes glow red when he and the other animatronics are disposing of William.
As a ghost child, he has white skin, with short red hair and gray eyes. He also wears a plain long sleeved orange shirt, along with dark blue jeans, black shoes and a cardboard hook.
Personality[]
Like his video game counterpart, Foxy is an animatronic who kills any security guard working the night shift. He is said to be the most dangerous of the group as he had the highest kill count in the film, capturing the previous night guard Bob, killing Jeff and nearly coming the closest to killing Mike. He is considered to easily be the only animatronic with the most screen-time, the most active threat among them and the first to confront William Afton once Abby frees him and the other animatronics from his control. He even sings to himself much like his video game counterpart does from the first game. Foxy is also shown to be a spy, shown when he oversees Mike in the office and later observes Abby fleeing to the arcade before following her.
However, Foxy, like his bandmates, isn't a bad person and instead a very tragic individual. Like his friends, he was once an innocent child who had his life cut short by William who abducted him, killed him and stuffed his corpse inside the Foxy animatronic suit alongside his friends. It's also mentioned by Vanessa that he and his bandmates don't want to hurt anyone, as they are influenced by William into committing all of their murders for him.
Despite this, Foxy, like his bandmates, is shown to be kind and playful towards children as, like the other animatronics, he still has the mind of a child, as demonstrated through his relationship with Abby. Despite being manipulated by Afton into attempting to stuff her into an animatronic suit and kill her brother, Mike, he does genuinely care about the girl, giving her a friendly smile while participating in building a fort with her and the others and even dancing with Abby along with Chica while Freddy and Bonnie are performing "Wild One" by Iggy Pop.
Powers and Abilities[]
- Enhanced Speed: Foxy is able to run at an exceptional speed, shown when he traps people in a hallway, he sprints at them so quickly that it sometimes looks like he is teleporting.
- Sharp Hook: Like his video game counterpart, Foxy has a razor-sharp hook which he could use for slashing and tearing.
- Enhanced Durability: Foxy is incredibly durable, shown to have almost no weaknesses. When he's electrocuted by Vanessa, he briefly shuts down, before he reactivates himself, seeming absolutely fine.
Biography[]
Background[]
The Foxy animatronic was created under William Afton, an associate of Fazbear Entertainment, being the pirate entertainer of Freddy Fazbear's Pizza in order to entertain kids. However, Afton abducted a child with a toy pirate hook, murdering him, along with other four children. The child's soul returns to the living world and possesses Foxy, residing in him.
After Freddy Fazbear's pizza place was closed down, William, under the alias of Steve Raglan, for who knows how long, went under the job as a career counselor, tricked people into getting a job at the abandoned pizza place, just so they could get killed by Foxy and the others. And by proxy, in his Spring Bonnie disguise, tricked his victims into killing the night guards or anyone who came into the building, such as himself, and his daughter Vanessa Shelly.
One night, a security guard named Bob, whom William had hired to work at the pizzeria so that he would get killed by the animatronics, was first shown being chased by Foxy while trying to escape from the pizzeria during his night shift, but the exit fails to open, leaving him helpless as Foxy ran towards him and successfully knocks him unconscious. Foxy then places him in the torture device, which Bob fails to escape, resulting in his death.
Five Nights at Freddy's[]
During Mike's first shift at Freddy's years later, after falling asleep and entering his first dream sequence, Foxy's spirit appeared in his dream along with the other ghost children. When he was asked by Mike concerning the disappearance of his younger brother, Foxy's spirit and the other ghost children instead ran away. During Mike's dream sequence on his second shift, when the ghost children ran away from him, Mike began chasing after Foxy's spirit. However, when Mike managed to catch him, it resulted in the child slashing his hook across Mike's left arm, leaving a slash wound behind that would appear in the real world, causing Mike to wake up in shock. Some minutes later, Foxy was introduced to Mike by Vanessa Shelly alongside the other animatronics because she wanted him to properly meet them.
After Mike's second shift, Foxy, Bonnie and the other animatronics were activated after a group of criminals broke in and began hunting them down. Foxy encountered Jeff after he successfully fended off Mr. Cupcake, who, just like Bob, failed to open the exit and couldn't escape as Foxy ran towards him, slashing him to death off-screen. During Mike's third shift, Foxy and the fellow animatronics attempted to kidnap Abby, but were interrupted by Mike, who was attempting to rescue her. He returned back to Pirate's Cove after Mike and Abby left the place. During Mike's fourth shift, Foxy and the fellow animatronics built a makeshift fort along with Mike, Vanessa and Abby.
In the final dream sequence, when Mike ultimately refused to surrender Abby to the ghost children, they began to retaliate and attack Mike, nearly killing him. During Mike's fifth and final shift, whilst Mike was fighting off Mr. Cupcake, who was biting his leg, Foxy began hunting down Abby. She ran to hide in the arcade, to which Foxy followed her and heard her when she accidentally powered on a pinball machine, and began searching for her. However, when he looked in Abby's hiding spot, she wasn't there, as she'd run and hidden inside the ball pit. Foxy approached the ball pit, only to be tased by Vanessa, causing him to deactivate.
After William Afton tells the animatronics to wake up because they have someone to play with, Foxy reactivated and joined the other animatronics under William's control and tried to take Abby, but after Abby draws a picture of William murdering him and his friends for the animatronics to show what he truly was, the memories of their deaths returned to the animatronics. Foxy and the others ultimately turned against Afton after they discovered the truth about him. During the springlock failure, Foxy and the other animatronics watched him as he suffered and writhed in pain. With Freddy Fazbear's Pizza Place internally collapsing before them, Foxy grabs him with his hook, dragging him into the engineering room so they can leave him to die as the rest of the animatronics followed behind.
It is uncertain at this time as to what might have happened to Foxy along with the rest of the animatronics after Freddy Fazbear Pizza's Place internally collapsed.
Trivia[]
- During the film's production, Foxy's arm malfunctioned and ignited on set.
- Foxy's "Diddledum" song is performed by Kellen Goff, who also voices Funtime Freddy, Molten Freddy and Glamrock Freddy.[1]
- The security guard Foxy murders at the beginning of the film was originally intended to be played by famous YouTuber, Markiplier, who claims he couldn't make the part due to scheduling conflicts with the film Iron Lung. This was most likely meant to be a reference to the fact that Foxy was infamously the first animatronic to kill Markiplier in his playthrough of the original game.
- Foxy has the highest kill count in the film, ranging up to 2 whereas his bandmates only have 1 at best.
- Out of his bandmates, he also came the closest to killing Mike.
- When Foxy attacks Jeff, the original jumpscare scream from the first game can be heard.
- In the original trailer as well as a few others follow, Foxy and the other animatronics' eyes would become red. This was met with mixed reaction from the community, some finding it funny and others hating it. Once the movie released, however, the red eyes had been completely scrubbed, with several scenes featuring the eyes not being in the theatrical release.
- Unlike the other animatronics, Foxy is the only animatronic who isn't portrayed by an actor because of his body structure and tears. Instead, he is controlled by a puppeteer rig.
- It is unknown how a child could fit inside Foxy's body as it is not big or wide enough for anything to fit inside. It should also be noted that his Ghost child's corpse should at least be noticeable because of the tears and body structure to his body.
