~ Stanton rationalizing abusing Andrew Hingham. |
Dr. Fran Stanton is the main antagonist of the Law & Order: Special Victims Unit episode "Conned". She is a psychiatrist who falsely diagnoses her teenage patient Andrew Hingham with schizophrenia so she can drug and manipulate him into giving in to her sexual demands.
She was portrayed by Ally Walker, who also portrayed June Stahl in Sons of Anarchy.
Biography[]
Early life[]
Stanton is a psychiatrist specializing in the treatment of children. She began treating Andrew Hingham when he was 12 for depression stemming from his dysfunctional home life. She quickly became obsessed with him; Stanton, who had been through several failed relationships with emotionally abusive men, wanted Andrew as a lover so she could be the one in control for once. She initiated the relationship by kissing him and having sex with him when he was 13, and so thoroughly manipulated him into believing they were in love that she began to believe it herself. She falsely diagnosed him with schizophrenia so she could control him with antipsychotic medication to keep him under her thumb.
When Andrew was 16, he got Stanton pregnant, and she gave birth to a boy. By then, Andrew wanted out of the relationship, but Stanton pressured him into staying with her by saying that if he left, he would be no different than his father, who abandoned him when he was a baby. Andrew nevertheless started dating a girl his own age named Mallory Sidwell, whom he met in summer school.
Filled with jealous rage, Stanton retaliated by telling Mallory's parents that Andrew had confessed to her that he had raped their daughter, prompting the Sidwells to file charges against him. Stanton then manipulated the system to have him committed.
"Conned"[]
The NYPD's Special Victims Unit arrests Andrew for rape, but Mallory reveals that he is her boyfriend and that she consented to have sex with him. He is put in jail anyway, however, and Stanton bails him out. SVU Detective Fin Tutuola and forensic psychiatrist George Huang go looking for him, eventually going to Stanton's house to ask her if he had contacted her. Fin and Huang search her house when they hear a baby crying and realize that the child is Stanton's. They report their discovery to the colleagues, who all believe that Andrew is the father.
Fin and Huang bring Stanton and Andrew to the SVU station house for questioning and then separate them, with Fin and Huang interrogating Stanton and Detective Olivia Benson interrogating Andrew. Stanton denies having sexually abused Andrew, claiming that he is delusional and presents a threat to her, Mallory, and society in general. Andrew, meanwhile, admits to Benson that he and Stanton have a sexual relationship, but Benson eventually helps him understand that what Stanton did to him was rape, not love. Faced with Andrew's admission and DNA evidence proving that he is her child's father, Stanton confesses to having sex with Andrew, but is adamant that he is a man and that they are in love.
Stanton is ultimately found guilty of statutory rape, and sentenced to 20 years in prison, while Andrew is exonerated and decides to raise their child with help from his mother. At her sentencing hearing, Stanton tells Andrew that she did not mean to hurt him, but she makes no admission that she did anything wrong. As she is led away to start serving her sentence, she cries out to Andrew that she will wait for him.
