Biography[]
Francesco Maria Barracu was a senior Fascist official and loyal supporter of Benito Mussolini during the final days of the Italian Social Republic in April 1945. In the film Mussolini: The Last Act, Barracu appears as a bald man with an eye patch, a result of a past war injury sustained during the Ethiopian campaign. He remains fiercely loyal to the regime and to Mussolini, even as the collapse of the Fascist government becomes inevitable. When Mussolini attempts to flee to Switzerland with his lover Claretta Petacci and a convoy of German soldiers, Barracu joins the escape effort, along with other high-ranking Fascist leaders. Despite the growing danger and the obvious disintegration of power, Barracu stays by Mussolini’s side, refusing to abandon the cause. As the convoy is stopped by Italian partisans in Dongo, the Fascist leaders are identified and handed over, while the Germans are allowed to continue under the terms of surrender negotiated with the CLN.
Captured with the rest of the group, Barracu is imprisoned in makeshift locations while awaiting his fate. He remains defiant and unrepentant. On April 28, 1945, Barracu, like many others arrested in Dongo, is executed by partisans in the purge that marks the end of the Fascist era in Italy. His unwavering loyalty and tragic end reflect the downfall of a regime and the fates of those who refused to abandon it.
