Francis Fratelli is one of the two secondary antagonists (alongside his brother Jake Fratelli) of the 1985 film The Goonies. He is a member of the Fratelli Family, and is Mama Fratelli’s favorite son.
He was portrayed by Joe Pantoliano, who also played Caesar in Bound, Cypher Reagan in The Matrix, Ralph Cifaretto in The Sopranos, Gabe Ugliano in Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief, Luigi Goterelli in Grand Theft Auto III, Albert Arlington in Call of Duty: Black Ops II, Mogan in The Adventures of Pluto Nash, and Stickyfins Whiting in SpongeBob SquarePants.
Biography[]
Francis is first seen breaking his brother Jake out of Clatsop County Jail, aided by his mother. Francis pours a trail of gasoline near the jail and lights it up to detonate it with a gunshot. Francis and his family then go to their hideout, the Lighthouse Lounge, an abandoned seaside restaurant. Later that day, two FBI agents come in there that night but are shot and killed by Francis and Jake.
Francis helps unload the first body to take it to their base. When he returns home he has a little argument with his brother only to find out that someone has been in their hiding place.
As they return to bring a second body to the club they find Chunk and they take him for questioning. Francis discovers a doubloon in Chunk's pocket, and believes that there is a cave system hidden under the Lighthouse Lounge, after which he locks him in the room with his brother Sloth so that he and his family can reach the Goonies to take all of the treasure.
On the way Francis joins the children on a tree that acts as a bridge, but being wet he slips and falls painfully between the legs on the tree, Jake also slips and gets hurt and is immobilized too, and soon a strong current arrives that overwhelms the two, but they still manage to cling to the rocks of the shore. When they get to Francis, he gets a punch from Data's boxing glove and they are forced to redo the lap.
As they stand up, Francis falls and then points the gun at Andy and Brand, but they escape just in time. The brothers follow him, and Francis must drag Jake, who is too afraid to climb over a large gap in the floor.
Once at the lagoon, they capture the Goonies. Data tries to confront them with his inventions, but fails. They take the Goonies to the deck to force them to give them everything they have in their pockets and throw them overboard, when Sloth and Chunk, after escaping from the room, arrive to rescue them.
Francis and Jake try to subdue Sloth, but the latter ties them up and dangles him from the mast of the ship as he confronts his mother before abandoning ship.
Later they are brought down by Mama Fratelli and the three plunder the ship, but they trigger a One-Eyed Willy trap and the ship begins to crumble. Sloth brings the Goonies to safety out of the cave and stays behind to rescue Francis and the other kindred. Fortunately, Sloth gets out together with Francis, Jack and Mama safe and sound at Cauldron Point, where Sloth is reunited with the Goonies. Francis, Jack and Mama were arrested by the police.
