~ Frank laying claim to his house |
Frank is the overarching antagonist of the 2022 comedy horror film Barbarian.
He is a serial rapist and killer who abducted and assaulted multiple women in the underground corridors beneath his house and committed subsequent acts of child molestation. The consequences of his disturbing behavior led to the birth of the Mother, a deformed and barbaric byproduct of years of incest.
He was portrayed by Richard Brake, who also played Joe Chill in Batman Begins, Enrikas Dortlich in Hannibal Rising, the Night King in Game of Thrones, Valin Hess in The Mandalorian and Otis Clairborne in R.I.P.D. 2: Rise of the Damned.
Personality[]
Frank is an extremely perverted, misogyinistic, and abusive man, as he abducts many women that interest him, doing so by posing as a maintenance man in order to unlock windows in their houses in order to break in and abduct them later. When he leaves the house, he puts on a facade of politness around others, though usually speaks in a very monotone voice. After abducting them, he rapes them, and then rapes their children, leading to severely deformed offspring such as The Mother. He also proceeds to record these deviant acts, and put them on VHS tapes to view, and presumably sexually pleasure himself to, later.
While left ambiguous, much of what he does to his victims can be inferred from the visuals and from other characters. He had built an extensive labyrinth-like tunnel system below his own house, which can only be accessed through a secret passageway in the basement. Said tunnel system is lined with dozens of metal cages, implying that he had locked up all of the women that he had kidnapped, and only let them out when he wanted to unleash his sexual urges on them.
One of the VHS tapes that he's made, which AJ proceeds to watch, has one of his victims screaming in pain as she is violently assaulted by Frank. Though the exact details of this tape are left ambiguous, it nonetheless disgusted him enough to call the police, indicating that Frank performs espescailly depraved acts on his victims, and also takes sadistic pleasure in inflicting pain on them. He also appeared to have killed many of his victims during recording as well, as evidenced by the lack of any other figures besides him and The Mother being present in the dungeon, and the blood stains found in the room where he did the recording.
He is also heavily implied to be negligent to both his victims and their offspring, as seen with the Mother, who has considerably poor hygiene, is unable to speak proper sentences, and was seemingly never taught to wear clothes. She was also seemingly left in a separate room in the dungeon for most of her life, with the only source of stimuli being a television set playing a VHS tape instructing mothers on nurturing their babies.
Biography[]
In the 1980s, Frank owned a house on Barbary street during a period in which the neighborhood was falling apart. During his time in that house, Frank posed as a maintenance man to enter women's houses and unlock their windows to sneak into and kidnap them later. He also built tunnels underground in which he kept the women he kidnapped and raped. He held the women captive for months or years each, long enough for some of them to give birth to his children in captivity. He kept the resulting children captive in the tunnels with him, and raped the girls when they grew old enough. He also had a room where he recorded his rapes and labeled the recordings of his actions. Over time due to decades of rape and incest a child named The Mother became born which had supernatural strength.
Frank eventually lost ownership of the house but he continued to live in the tunnels, presumably being aided by The Mother who feared him. Over time, being kept in a small room in the tunnels, Frank grew old and bedridden, having become a horrific monster. One day the house's new owner AJ Gilbride found him in the tunnels and tried to help him. He moved a desk with a water bottle on it to give to him, however, AJ was not aware of the gun that was on the desk. AJ discovered the recordings of his misdeeds and disgustedly turned around to see Frank holding a gun. AJ, who thought he was going to shoot him pleaded with him but Frank pointed to his head and shot himself, having grown tired of living.
Trivia[]
- Andre states that he had multiple children that he had sex with. Frank presumably only sexually abused the daughters, as there are no males in the tunnels. This could possibly mean that he killed the male babies, only keeping the female ones.
- Since none of the women Frank abducted are seen in the tunnels and no one ever reported him to authorities, it can be assumed that Frank eventually murdered all of the women he kidnapped, making him a serial killer as well as a serial rapist. The blood stains found in some parts of the dungeon also points to this.
