Biography[]
Frank is the Victory Project's enigmatic founder and leader. One day, Everyone (including Alice and Jack) goes to Frank and Shelley’s home as they host a party. However one woman, Margaret, stands up and says that the women are not supposed to be there. Her husband Ted pulls her away before she begins to create a scene. Other women talk about Margaret being disturbed as she walked her son out into the desert, and he vanished, with Margaret claiming that he was taken from her before she was able to recover. Alice goes back into the house, where Jack starts to have sex with her. Frank watches them having sex, Alice sees him. but Jack doesn't notice. The next morning. while bringing the shopping trolley across town, Alice witnesses a red Biplane crash towards the desert. Alice disembarks and rushes into the desert to help, accidentally stumbling on Victory Headquarters - a small building covered in mirror-like windows. When she touches it, she sees disturbing visuals of drops of blood and women dancing in synchronization, along with hearing Frank’s voice. Alice wakes up back in her bedroom, with Jack saying she was home when he returned and was there for hours, though Alice has no memory of making it back home.
Alice later breaks into Dr. Collins' briefcase and finds a heavily-redacted medical file for Margaret, which she then burns in frustration. Alice becomes increasingly paranoid and confused, feeling as if Frank is watching her every move. During a special Victory event in which Frank gives Jack a special promotion, Alice has a breakdown in the bathroom and is comforted by Bunny. Alice attempts to explain everything to Bunny, but Bunny reacts angrily, accusing Alice of being selfish and attempting to ruin everything for everyone, pointing out she sounds "just like Margaret." Alice and Jack go to a major event hosted by Frank, with all the other couples in attendance.
Frank invites Jack onto the stage, where he announces to the crowd that he is promoting Jack to work with the senior advisory board. Everyone cheers while Frank starts a chant of “Whose world is this? OURS!” Alice steps out and is found by Bunny. Alice tries to explain that something is not right, but Bunny tells her to stop making assumptions. Alice and Jack later host a dinner, inviting everyone (including Frank and Shelley). During the dinner, Alice brings up several things she’s noticed, such as the women all having the same story about how they met their husbands, and that most some of the women come from Philadelphia, Chicago, or Baltimore. Alice then openly accuses Frank of being behind something sinister, which Shelley chastises her for, but Frank tells Alice privately that he was hoping for someone like her to challenge him.
Alice later remembers the whole truth: that Victory is a simulated world created by Frank, and that Jack has kidnapped her and forced her into the simulation in the hope they can lead a perfect life together. When Jack realizes she knows the truth, he claims he did this for her as she was miserable in her real life, but Alice is enraged that Jack took away her autonomy. Jack hugs Alice, begging her to forgive him, but begins to crush her, and Alice kills him with a glass tumbler in self-defense,apparently, killing Jack in the real world as well. Frank is alerted to Jack's death and sends his men to capture her. Alice is found with Jack's body by Bunny, who explains that she has known all along that Victory is a simulation but chooses to stay so she can be with her children, who are dead in real life.
Bunny tells Alice to flee to Victory Headquarters, which is an exit portal from the simulation, and holds off Bill when he attempts to attack Alice for killing Jack. The other wives gradually begin to realize the truth as their husbands start to panic. Alice steals Jack's car and drives out towards Victory Headquarters, chased by Dr. Collins and Frank's men. She tricks Dr. Collins into killing himself and several others in a car crash. At their house, Shelley, apparently, stabs Frank to death for his failure, claiming it is now "her turn". Alice makes it to Victory Headquarters, where she encounters a vision of Jack asking her to stay. Alice ignores the vision and rushes to the window just before Frank's men reach her. Over a black screen, the sound of Alice gasping for air is heard, implying she escaped.
Since we don't see him dying, it's not known if Frank died or not. It is possible that Frank could have played it safe and written down the exclusion code so as not to die in reality if he was killed in a simulation.
If that was the case, then he could thus reinsure Jack.
Trivia[]
- The hilltop headquarters of the Victory Corporation is the iconic "volcano house" in the Mojave Desert community of Newberry Springs, California. The house was owned by PBS television personality Huell Howser, who donated the house to Chapman University in 2012 shortly before his death. The house was also included in the famous 1970 photograph Poolside Gossip, and its models' poses and outfits are directly referenced in the film during the party scene.
- In an interview, director Olivia Wilde stated that Chris Pine was originally going to play Jack, Alice's husband, instead of Harry Styles. He was asked to audition for the part of Frank as well after Wilde decided to have a younger couple be the center of the film.
- Frank's appearance, personality, and style of speech were inspired by Dr. Jordan Peterson, a controversial Canadian psychologist, author, and podcast host.
- It is never revealed why Frank designed a reality that kills people to the point where they ultimately die in the real world.
