Frank (surname unknown) is the protagonistic villain of the 1971 giallo film The Double. Frank is a failing architect wnd an impotent misogynist with an obsession with raping his wife and mother-and-law, as well as getting rid of his rival, Eddie Cannon.
He's portrayed by French actor Jean Sorel.
History[]
Frank was a trust fund kid under his father's brick manufacturing conglomerate. Frank's brother ran the factory after their father retired, but Frank was criticized for not participating in the business and instead living off the money. Once the worker's unionized, Frank's brother tried to make Frank assist in saving the factory, but Frank always avoided the problem.
Frank married a diplomat's daughter, Lucia Rosatti, and as the family traveled the world for Mr. Rosatti's job, Frank chose Morocco as the place for a honeymoon in the spirit of Lucia's globetrotting. Theyre joined by Frank's friend Roger and his wife Marie. The group meets a hippie named Eddie Cannon, and while they all find him a lot of fun, Frank finds him competition for Lucia's affections. He fantasizes about Eddie dying repeatedly, from drowning to Frank shooting him, either in the crotch with a harpoon or with a rifle once Eddie os to ride back to the airport. Frank consequentially becomes more abusive at Lucia, raping her as he wants and destroying her birth control once he catches her using it.
Lucia's mother Nora visits her during the honeymoon, and Frank becomes obsessed with her. It peaks when he chokes and rapes Nora at the place where she's staying one night. She never tells anyone, but she distances himself from Frank from then on, in spite of him following her around and harassing her. Frank and Lucia get jealous of each other, Frank fearing Lucia, along with Nora, will be allured by Eddie, or Lucia leaving with Roger when simply left to be alone; and Lucia noticing Marie was making passes at Frank, which Frank rejected. Even back in Rome, they insult each other, Frank about Lucia's social life and spending, Lucia about Frank's struggling career and miserly attitude. Frank becomes much more impotent, so Lucia takes the opportunity to stop his rapes more often.
Frank finds out Nora is back in Rome, ao he calls her apartment and hits her door. He sees a man at the building watching him, but puts it out of his mind. Frank finds out Eddie is there as well, so he tries to hear from Nora through him. Yet there's a concerning hangup when it seems Nora may answer, so Frank rushes over, where he finds Eddie shot dead. Fearing Nora killed him, Frank burns Eddie's remains in the factory incinerator. He finds out form an inspector who questions him Nora was in Paris during the murder, which shocks and exasperates Frank. Frank is shown the mystery man, a physics professor, who Frank lies he doesn't know. Frank rushes to the airport when Lucia picks up a returning Nkra, and Nora reveals Eddie was gay, the professor being his partner he fled. Frank returns to fantasizing about Lucia and Nora together once Noea stays with Frank and Lucia, but he never gets to act on him.
The professor repeatedly shoots Frank in a parking garage, demanding the remains of Eddie. He killed Eddie for rejecting him, but as Frank stopped him from claiming Eddie's remains, the professor shot him in revenge. Frank says nothing and dies from the gunshots, the professor fleeing once people respond to the noise.
