Frank Gallagher is the overarching protagonist of the UK-US TV series Shameless.

He is the patriarch of the Gallagher family, whom he screws over multiple times in the series. Although he does love his children to some extent and cares about them, he has done many villainous deeds with malicious intent, and is generally shown to be an extremely selfish person. Frank's relationship with his family seems to deteriorate with every season that passes to the point of his family making him homeless. He is the father of Fiona, Lip, Debbie, Carl, and Liam, and is the adoptive father of Ian. He is also the former lover of Monica Gallagher.

He was portrayed by David Threlfall in the original UK series and by William H. Macy in the US adaptation.

Personality[]

Frank is a hopeless alcoholic and drug addict that is often very selfish and manipulative, and at times even sadistic. He is the definition of a loose cannon and this often lands him in trouble, usually because his schemes backfire on him. Frank could care less about his family's well-being and doesn't provide any financial support for them, preferring to be out getting drunk, finding somewhere else to stay, and/or attempting to con people. Because of this he has been described by a lot of people as a "total fucking asshole."

When things don't go his way he often blames other people for his problems, even when it's his own fault. While most of the time he is easygoing he has had multiple angry outbursts throughout the series, and despite his incompetence at times, he is shown to be really smart, often planning intricate schemes that would work if Frank was a little more competent.

Despite all his faults there are times when he tries to be a better father and person, though these attempts often go nowhere. However, it does show that Frank has some good in his heart.

Appearance[]

Frank has long blond hair and a stubble beard. He often wears dirty clothes, which makes him look homeless most of the time and shows just how little he cares about his appearance. He also has multiple scars on his body from injuries and surgeries.

Biography[]

Early Life[]

Frank was born to Peggy Gallagher and an unknown father. He has three brothers Jerry (his twin), Clayton, and Wyatt. Frank was apparently the least favorite in his family as his parents would abuse him even if he did nothing wrong. It seems he has a bad relationship with his brothers too, since Jerry threatened to shoot Lip and Ian when he found out Frank was their father and Clayton was annoyed that Frank and Monica came to visit him. It is unknown how Wyatt feels about Frank but it's assumed they aren't close. Despite Clayton's annoyance with Frank, they seemed to get along when they were younger since they were ushers together.

Villainous Deeds[]

  • In the second episode of the first season Frank was shown to be a child abuser when he head-buts his step-son/nephew (believed to be his son at the time), Ian giving him a nose bleed. While this appears to shock all in attendance, including Fiona's then boyfriend Jimmy it's implied that instances like this have happened before.
  • When Ian and Mickey are comparing their terrible parents Ian reveals that Frank locked him a basement by himself at some point in his childhood.
  • After Frank's wife Monica separates from him and abandons their family completely, Frank knowingly withheld information of her location and whereabouts to his children. When Frank does seek Monica out, it's only to get her to sign insurance forms for a settlement and he tricks her into meeting with him by using his then-girlfriend to make her believe she won a prize from a grocery store. After trying to back out of meeting her upon seeing her new girlfriend Roberta (revealing that Monica is bisexual), he is spotted and his deception is revealed. After being followed by Monica their children walk in and Roberta reveals their intention to take the infant Liam to raise themselves, when Monica is actually arguably worse than Frank since his life went downhill upon meeting her. In spite of this Frank agrees to give Liam over if Monica signs the settlement. Despite putting his children through intense emotional and mental stress he only thinks of the settlement money. Thankfully Monica left without Liam when she realized how much pain she would continue to cause her family if she stayed or took Liam.
  • Frank bets money he doesn't have to a local thug and when he can't pay up Frank chooses to give Liam to him as collateral as opposed to losing his fingers. While the thug actually turns out to be a reasonable person that wishes Liam no harm, Frank's children are forced to give what little they have saved up and enlist the help of their neighbors who conveniently have an excess in cannabis crops that the Gallagher children are able to exchange with the thug to settle Frank's debt.
