I'll have my revenge! On the humanity that made me suffer... CURSED, CURSED CREATOR!
~ The Monster, vowing to get his revenge on Victor Frankenstein for creating him

Frankenstein's Monster is the main antagonist of horror mangaka Junji Ito's Frankenstein, an adaptation of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein. He is an alternate version of Frankenstein's Monster, with a story and appearance which is largely the same as the original.

Appearance[]

This version of Frankenstein's Monster is based on the original description of him by Mary Shelley. He is a gigantic artificial man, at least twice, if not three times as tall as Victor and the other humans in the story. Owing to him being made from dead bodies, he has an undead appearance, with his skin constantly damp and covered in bandages from which blood regularly seeps through, and his eyes are milky and cloudy, making his pupils and irises difficult to make out. For much of his time after his creation, the Monster wears a long, dark cloak.

Biography[]

Much of this version of the Monster's story is identical to the original; however, it diverges at a few key points.

During Victor's creation of the second monster, the Monster appears and supplies Victor with the head of the recently-executed Justine Moritz. Though Henry Clerval claims there is no way he could have known it was hers, Victor assumes that the monster had chosen Justine to be the second monster's head specifically to torment him. Nevertheless, the duo finish building her, and bring her to life. However, upon seeing the Monster, who had arrived to witness her resurrection, Justine screamed in terror, and attempted to attack him, forcing the Monster to destroy her.

Furious, the Monster vowed to destroy Victor's life by returning to his home in Switzerland and killing his family. Henry attempted to give chase, but was killed shortly afterwards, and Victor returned home too late to save his father, Alphonse, and his fiance, Elizabeth. Thus, the chase began, which eventually led Victor to be found and rescued by Robert Walton.

After Victor died, a strange noise could be heard. As Walton and his ship's crew watched from the deck, the Monster appeared, howling in sorrow, lamenting that he was now truly alone, and that his suffering would soon end. As a snowstorm blew in, his cries gradually grew fainter, before being drowned out by the wind and snow.

Personality[]

As with the original version of Frankenstein's Monster, the Monster in Junji Ito's adaptation starts off as an innocent man in spite of his incredible strength, whose one desire is to find human companionship, be it among ordinary humans, or another of his kind. However, his fearsome appearance terrifies everyone around him, and he is inevitably driven off. During his time spent in the wood shed of the de Lacey Family's cottage, he grows particularly attached to them, developing a platonic, familial sense of love towards them, which he explains to the blind elder de Lacey when he has a chance to talk to him in person.

After being rejected by humanity, the Monster swears revenge on Victor, and gains his cruel streak, again in common with Mary Shelley's original story. He selects Justine's head as the head of the second monster, but is horrified when she attacks him, and is forced to break her body into pieces. After that point, he becomes even more vengeful, and slaughters Henry, Alphonse and Elizabeth without any mercy. However, when Victor dies aboard Walton's boat, the Monster is last seen in despair, having realised that he is now truly alone, and that his last chance at finding any friendship, even if it is from the person he hates the most, is truly gone.

Quotes[]

What exactly am I...? What am I? I'm unlike the humans. God made human beings... So then who made me? Victor... Frankenstein... MY MAKER! Why did he make me?! I'm ugly and alone!
~ Frankenstein's Monster wondering about how he came to exist.
