“ | The guy you're looking for, I think I've met him. A long time ago, he sat down next to me at the bar, and he had some wild stories about how he tricked girls into his car for nothing, five bucks, some loose cigarettes. He gave me those pictures you found. Hmm? Sick. ... He was big. Kinda guy, you'd just walk right by him. Said he killed 100 girls. Must be some kind of record. | „ |
~ Franklin Barnes talking about his own murders in the abstract |
Franklin Barnes is the main antagonist of the Chicago P.D. episode "Don't Read the News". He is a necrophiliac serial killer.
He was portrayed by Chris McKinney.
Biography[]
Overview[]
Not much is known about his past, only that he hails from Chicago and works as an engineer. He is a pillar of his community, seen as a loving father to his grown son, Ricky, and husband to his wife, Jeannette.
However, Barnes was actually a serial killer and rapist who preyed on Black prostitutes or young women in the city. His M.O. was to invite his victims into his car and drive them to a remote place, where he would then shoot them dead, rape their corpses and then take photographs of their dead bodies so he could relive the experience.
During one hunt, he raped a teenage prostitute named Sienna Brody, shooting her twice in the heart before raping her. She survived by playing dead until Barnes finally left her in an alley. She went to the hospital but did not reveal what had happened to her out of fear that no one would believe her. The traumatizing experience left her unable to have children and caused her to give up prostitution.
By the time of the episode, he had been inactive for a few years, one of his longer cooling-off periods.
"Don't Read the News"[]
When Ricky's girlfriend Grace Johnson came to speak with Ricky, Franklin's urges resurface, and he attacks her. After a struggle, he ends up raping and murdering Grace, before dumping her body in a football field. He later taunts the police by making an anonymous phone call directing them to the crime scene and refusing to identify himself. His action caused CPD Intelligence unit to investigate with relatives of his earlier victims informing Officer Kim Burgess that Johnson's murder was connected with those of 10 other women committed over a span of several years. Intelligence locates DNA under Grace's fingernails but are unable to find a match in the system, and they realize that the killer has never been arrested. They then widen the search to find a family member.
Detectives Jay Halstead and Erin Lindsay of the Chicago Police Department's Intelligence Unit decided to look into the men in Johnson's life, leading to Ricky. Franklin is introduced when the detectives question him and his wife about Ricky's whereabouts, since he had a connection to the victim. When they ask to search Ricky's room, he initially refuses, but then eventually agrees. When they investigate Ricky's room, Barnes took the time to cover his tracks by secretly planting the gun in his son's car and the detectives locate it.
Soon Ricky is found and arrested, with his mother being outraged that the cops lied about not charging him. Sergeant Hank Voight and Det. Alvin Olinsky interrogate Ricky, who denies killing Grace. ASA Steve Kot arrives with the Commander and two officer, revealing Ricky's that DNA is a partial match to a sample found at all the crime scenes, leading to him being locked up in the county jail. However, the detectives do not believe that he is responsible for all of the murders, as he would have been a teenager at the time he supposedly committed the earliest murders and they knew he wouldn't have the mindset to evade the cops for so long.
Officers Kevin Atwater and Kenny Rixton track and spoke to Sienna Brody, the only one of the killer's victims who survived, and she says that Ricky did not attack her. However, she identifies Franklin Barnes as the man who tried to kill her after seeing a picture of him. Sienna told Voight her experience and how she along with other prostitutes were aware someone was picking them off. Barnes, meanwhile, goes into hiding, realizing that it is only a matter of time before the police begin to suspect him.
The Intelligence Unit gets a search warrant for his house and learn from his wife, that he leaves for days. They take cans of his favorite drink for a positive DNA sample; they also find a bloody rag and photographs of his victims in a hidden room. Intelligence realized that wherever he is, he is making sure to destroy evidence to cover his tracks.
Halstead and Lindsay visit Ricky in jail and tell him that his father killed Johnson and framed him for the crime. Angry and horrified, Ricky makes it clear that he didn't know but tells them that they will likely find his father at a family friend's warehouse. Sure enough, they find Franklin there, trying to get rid of evidence by burning it and taking one last look to admire his handiwork, and call out to him. Voight orders him to surrender and when he does, he has Kenny arrest him. After looking at a picture in a disgusted manner, Voight has him escorted away.
At the precinct, Voight and Olinsky interrogates Franklin, who tries to deny everything, including the accusation he called in Grace's body. They condemn him for being willing to let his son take the blame for the crimes, only for Franklin to arrogantly dismiss the accusation, saying that Ricky would "get over it". He soon brags about his crimes in a deniable way, saying he once met a man who claimed to have committed the murders. Voight sees through him, however, and tells him that once the DNA on his victims is matched, he's going to prison for the rest of his life; he also promises to personally make sure that he suffers for what he did. He says nothing in response and smirks.
Franklin is ultimately connected to many other murders, while Ricky is exonerated and released with Sgt. Platt helping him and his mother avoid scrutiny from the media. Meanwhile, Burgess visits the victims' family to tell them they have arrested the murderer.
