wThe Freakers, also known as Freaks, are the secondary antagonists of the 2019 video game Days Gone, developed by SIE Bend Studio. They are mammals that have been infected with the Freaker Virus, transforming them into vicious and aggressive beasts. The infected populations quickly overwhelmed society leading to the downfall of civilization. Freakers are not just limited to humans as the virus has also infected large populations of dogs, bears and ravens resulting in many variants and mutants.

In the post-apocalypse, the Freakers are a source of great danger representing an ongoing threat to the survivors of the apocalypse seeking to rebuild. They are also extensively studied by the National Emergency Response Organization which seeks to better understand the Freaker Virus as well as their behavioral patterns.

Appearance[]

Freakers have an appearance of having decayed flesh bodies, similar to undead beings, such as zombies. All Freakers appear to have their skin covered in bloody sores, and many infected humans seem to have gone hairless.

Personality[]

Freakers are seemingly mindless, aggressive, and hostile to any uninfected beings, as well as other kinds of infected. Freakers are actually still living beings, and act as such, though it is reported by NERO scientists that they have lost higher brain function rendering them anatomically braindead. They also seem to retain base primal instincts, such as hunting. When unprovoked or unaware of the presence of non-infected human or fauna, Freakers will merely wander around in search of them. When they find one they will chase them down in a furious frenzy, usually alerting other freakers with their increased movement and vocals, creating a horde that will run down any prey. While the Freakers are known to travel in packs and work together, this behavior is only found among the same mutations, as the infected will attack each other if they come within the vicinity of other types. Freakers will behave differently depending on the weather. Rain can dull their senses of sight and sound and snow will grant them a strength boost, but decreased visibility.

The vast majority of Freakers migrate across the post-apocalyptic world in large packs known as Hordes, reportedly moving back and forth along highway and interstate networks. Offshoot hordes generally break off from the main pack and settle in regional areas establishing nests in caves, tunnels and even abandoned structures close to mass graves and bodies of water. An example of this phenomenon can be seen across the US West Coast where massive hordes originating from California and the Bay Area migrate up and down the Coast using the I-5 Interstate and Santiam Highway, enabling large packs to settle in rural areas such as the countryside of Oregon. This makes clearing local hordes a fruitless endeavor as they are eventually replaced by fresh packs. Hordes typically hibernate in the day and come out at night to feed and drink, moving and reacting to threats as one pack.

Since the outbreak, the National Emergency Response Organization has undertaken further research and study of Freaker behavior such as setting up sensors and beacons at areas prone to high Freaker activity. An initial theory (and hope) was that the global Freaker populations would eventually die off due to starvation. However research into their feces revealed that they not only sustained themselves on flesh but also cave plants, grass, plants and leaves. Further study also revealed that some individuals have retained limited forms of awareness towards objects, such as wearing and looking after jewelry such as watches. This minimal cognizance is believed to be the underlying reason why many Freaker groups form nests in built up areas, buildings and vehicles and that they may retain some sense of familiarity and comfort with formerly inhabited areas. Their tendency to form packs and hordes also suggests a potential need for social interaction amongst their kind, an element of humanity that the virus couldn't erase.

History[]

Origin[]

An organization called Cloverdale Corporation were secretly developing a bio-weapons program disguised as a bio-botany project. Two of the scientists who worked for the organization were Sarah Whitaker and David Gourman. Cloverdale developed the virus in secret, taking away their personnel's clearance and using the lab for the classified project.

David had become suspicious of Cloverdale's research and correctly deduced their intent. David tried to convince Sarah that their employer was up to something, but she did not believe him and tried to convince him that he was being paranoid. David then broke into the lab and stole a sample of the virus. He brought the virus sample to an environmental convention in Portland in an effort to publicly expose Cloverdale's unethical research. However, Gorman unwittingly infected himself with the stolen sample and further exposed the convention attendees, whom in turn returned to their homes all over the world and spread the virus even more.

Within two weeks, the virus had spread throughout the world, killing half of the human population and turning millions of people and animals into Freakers. As a result, civilization fell, and cities were abandoned in favor of smaller settlements in the wilderness, while the world is left at the mercy of the Freakers.

Days Gone[]

The infected have completely taken over Oregon, forming nests and growing in size as mankind attempts to survive the outbreak. NERO soon starts to travel across the region to study the Freakers, discovering that the virus is evolving, creating new types such as the bleacher, screamer and breaker.

Types[]

Humans:[]

  • Newts: Adolescent children infected by the virus, Newts prefer to observe and stalk their target with packs, often being found on rooftops and occasionally in caves. Described as opportunist, they will attack the player when low on health, but will not come into conflict with other Freakers or animals.
  • Swarmers: Adults infected by the virus, Swarmers can found across each region, either alone or in packs when hunting for food.
  • Bleachers: Swarmers with albino-like skin, Bleachers have slightly more health than Swarmers.
  • Screamers: Female infected Freakers, they will scream when encountering a survivor, alerting the infected to the player's position.
  • Breakers: Heavily mutated Frakers, they are giant and hostile infected who will rush their target.
  • Reachers: The newly discovered evolved infected, Reachers have greater speed and strength than the average Freaker. Due to developing greater intelligence, Reacher utilize stealth when preparing to attack their target.
  • Intelligent: Humans who have become infected with the Freaker virus, but maintain their intelligence and conscious.

Animals:[]

  • Runners: Infected wolves who can run at high speeds towards their target.
  • Ragers: Infected bears with enhanced strength and unrelenting aggression.
  • Criers: Infected ravens, they will swarm their target and can be found around tree nests.
  • Infected Bats: Mentioned only, a NERO researcher explains the infected bats killed each other.

Trivia[]

  • The Freakers were voiced by Cattle Decapitation's lead singer Travis Ryan.
