The Freaks are the overarching antagonists of the Death Wish novel and film series, appearing as minor antagonists in the original 1974 film.
They are portrayed by Gregory Rozakis, Christopher Logan and Jeff Goldblum.
Biography[]
The three Punks are first seen causing mayhem in the grocery store where Paul Kersey's wife and daughter are shopping. During the visit to the store the punks purchase spraypaint and beer. They take notice of Paul's wife and daughter and get access to their delivery address.
They head to the apartment complex where they live. One of the punks poses as a delivery boy and manages to gain access to the house, and they threaten the mother and daughter. They demand money from them but seeing there isn't enough the gang get angry and begin to rape the daughter, and another of the group beats the mother when she tries to defend herself. Another of the punks sprays the house and sprays the daughter. They eventually leave, and the wife later dies in the hospital and the daughter left catatonic.
Despite the police's attempts to find them, the gang are never caught and brought to justice for their actions. The event causes a once ordinary Paul Kersey to begin a life of vigilantism.
Trivia[]
- They are the only villains in the Death Wish film series to wrong Paul Kersey but not meet their comeuppance at his hands.
- Despite being minor villains in the original film, their actions are what cause Paul Kersey to become a vigilante, something he would carry for over the course of 20 years in five movies.
- In the original 1972 novel, they were mentioned briefly. However, their role was expanded in the 1974 adaptation to likely give the plot more weight.
