In the movie, Freddie and other KKK members capture Ellen Roark, Brigance's love interest, and viciously attack her by stripping her to nothing but her underwear but don't rape her and leave her tied to a post, in the middle of the woods so she'll die of exposure. When Brigance convinces the jury that sparing the life of a white man for murder of the same nature should be equally the same as sparing the life of a black man, Carl Lee is then acquitted and dismissed of the charge and death penalty. Freddie and the other KKK members become very dangerious once again, which the net result is is that Sheriff Wells arrests Freddie Lee and the crooked deputy, who was on Freddie Lee's side.
