Ed has never seen this before. So what else could it be than a horrible alien, huh?
~ Ed talking about the Fridge Monster

The unnamed Fridge Monster, also referred to as the Mysterious Space Creature is the main antagonist of the Cowboy Bebop episode "Toys in the Attic". It is a mutated life form that was born out of a decomposing Ganymede Rock Lobster that Spike bought and stored in a fridge on the Bebop. The creature eventually escapes from inside the fridge and attacks the Bebop crew by infecting them with its toxins, incapacitating them one by one. Members of the same species also appear in the Space Dandy episode "The Lonely Pooch Planet, Baby".

History[]

Background[]

At some point in 2070, Spike bought a Ganymede Rock Lobster and stored it in a fridge on the Bebop's attic, so his fellow crewmates wouldn't eat it. He forgot about it and left it there for a year, causing it to decompose and give birth to all kinds of fungus and mold. The Fridge Monster was born admist these mutations and stayed there for a year.

Cowboy Bebop[]

On August 6th, 2071, the Monster escapes from the fridge and starts living in the vents of the ship. It is first seen crawling around the pipes before attacking a rat that was on the vents. When Jet Black goes to the attic to get a blanket to cover himself after a failed game of strip gambling with Faye, he gets attacked by the creature, who bites him on the neck.

After the attack, Jet activates the emergency alarm to alert Spike and Faye. After arriving there, Jet tells them that something bit him. Ein starts growling and they all notice a rat running in the room. Jet exclaims that it wasn't the rat that bit him and that there was a strange mark on his neck. The crew, however, is dismissive of him and walk away. When Jet asks Spike about the fridge, he claims that he didn't remember having one on the attic.

After Jet's conditions worsen, Spike starts researching the Bebop's database to find any matches to the infection in Jet's neck, but to no avail. Ed starts saying that it's possibly an alien organism, to which Spike agrees. After a while, Faye decides to take a bath to calm her mind, during which she's visited by the creature on the bathroom, which bites her on her leg.

Spike and Ed both prepare themselves to search for the creature using thermal vision goggles. Spike sees the creature zooming in front of him, but initially thinks it's just a glitch in the equipment. Suddenly, Faye appears before Spike, desperate, asking him what exactly happens after one is bitten by the mysterious creature, which Spike responds saying that they'll only find out after capturing it. Faye starts sulking, saying that she doesn't want to die before collapsing on the ground. Spike comes closer to her body and notices the same mark Jet had on his neck forming in her leg. While Ed is out searching for the creature, Ein goes out on his own inside the vents, where he gets attacked by the Fridge Monster. Spike hears his barks and comes out to rescue him. There, he gets face to face with the creature, before running away.

After tucking all the sick members into safety, Spike decides to confront the creature on his own, arming himself with a steel spit and a flamethrower. After a brief search, Spike encounters the creature on the vents and tries to capture it with a net, but it ends up dodging it. He then throws smoke bombs at the monster and locks himself out of the room. Upon realizing he had forgotten his lighter and cigarettes there, Spike returns to the room and starts being chased by the monster. After another brief confrontation, Spike successfully shoots the monster and then burns it using the flamethrower, temporarily stunning the creature. Thinking it had died, Spike gets hungry and decides to go get some food, until he suddenly remembers about the fridge in the attic and the Ganymede Rock Lobster he left there. He goes to the attic to check on it only to be greeted by a full colony of funguses growing inside the frige. Desperately, Spike deactivates the artificial gravity and starts carrying the fridge towards the airlock in order to throw it into space. While he tries to open the door outside, the creature escapes and sneaks up on Spike, successfuly biting his arm. Spike however, doesn't budge and opens the hatch, successfuly jettisoning the fridge out of the ship, but hits his head on the closing hatch, passing out right after.

Eventually, the creature escapes once again and finds Ed, who was taking a nap on one of the ship's corridors. Mistaking it for a pudding (a bean roll in the original japanese dub), she grabs the monster and eats it, finally killing it once in for all.

Space Dandy[]

Although the original Fridge Monster died, other members of its species, likely created out of the same mutation kept being born in the fridge, even after it was in was left to wander in space. The fridge eventually landed on the far away alien planet of Machinia, being found by Space Dandy's crew. After Meow opened it, several of similar Fridge Monsters, now in much greater quantity escape from it and start attacking him.

Trivia[]

  • The Fridge Monster is the only Cowboy Bebop antagonist from the original series to not be a human, as well as the only villain to have successfully taken down every member of the Bebop crew.
  • It's unknown how the crew managed to find a cure for the Fridge Monster's infection, as they all appear completely fine in the next episode. Given that Spike had set the Bebop's autopilot in direction to Mars, it's possible Ed got help for them after landing there.
    • In the next episode preview, narrated by Ed herself, she jokingly suggests that they have all died and that was the final episode, stating that the next episode was going to be focused on the adventures of "Cowgirl Ed", before Spike cuts her off.
  • In episode 4, "The Gateway Shuffle", Spike is seen ordering a lobster while dining with Jet in Ganymede. It's possible that could have been the same lobster that spawned the Fridge Monster, though given the vague timeline of the series, that's rather unlikely.
