Frost is a member of the Lin Kuei clan that turned on Sub-Zero and a supporting antagonist in the Mortal Kombat series of fighting games.
She first appeared as a supporting antagonist in Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance, a minor antagonist in Mortal Kombat: Deception, Mortal Kombat: Armageddon and Mortal Kombat X a minor character in the Mortal Kombat X comic series, a supporting antagonist in Mortal Kombat 11 and a minor antagonist in its story mode DLC, Mortal Kombat 11: Aftermath.
She is voiced by Chrissie Rios from Deadly Alliance to Armageddon, Kelly Hu in Mortal Kombat X, and Sara Cravens (who also voices Arete in Fire Emblem Fates: Heros) in Mortal Kombat 11.
Biography[]
Original Timeline[]
After Sub-Zero became the Grand Master of the Lin Kuei clan, he organized a tournament to recruit powerful warriors. The winner was Frost, showing exceptional skills; Frost then becomes the apprentice of Sub-Zero. After a time of hard and arduous training, Frost increases her combat ability, while her arrogance also increased.
During the events of Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance, when Raiden asked Sub-Zero for help to defeat the Deadly Alliance, she went with Sub-Zero to Outworld, during which Sonya is mentioned to dislike her. During this time Frost decided to make her move and froze Sub-Zero, leaving him motionless for a few seconds so she could steal the Dragon Medallion that he carried on his chest. Without possessing the strength and discipline necessary to control the power of the medallion, her own freezing power ended up burying her in an ice coffin. Sub-Zero felt very sorry for her because she had taken a lot of appreciation and affection, but he knew that he should give her a dignified burial, so he took her to some ancient ruins where he discovered that they both were descendants of the Cryomancers, a warrior culture able to master the ice.
As seen in Mortal Kombat: Deception/Unchained, Frost had not been died, and eventually reawoke in the ruins. Believing Sub-Zero had abandoned her, an increasingly delusional Frost made her way from Outworld to the Lin Kuei Temple. She began killing her fellow Lin Kuei under the delusion of them being Sub-Zero. However, Frost is arrested again by Sub-Zero, who freezes and contains her in the temple until she regains her sanity.
In Mortal Kombat: Armageddon, Frost is unwittingly reawoken by Taven, during his search for his mother's gift. Still in a delirious state, Frost saw him as Sub-Zero and fought him, although after the demi-god won the fight, she managed to regain her awareness, and fled. During the Battle of Armageddon, Frost joined the Forces of Darkness, and was seen fighting Sonya. In her non canon ending, Frost defeated Blaze and used her new powers to defeat Sub-Zero and take the Dragon Medallion. She subsequently used it to move the souls of her Cyromancer ancestors into the Lin Kuei, creating an army loyal to her to conquer the Realms. In the canon version of events, Frost was killed along the the majority of the combatants.
Second Timeline[]
Frost appears in the Mortal Kombat X prequel comic, as a fighter in a fight club with death fights, holding a record of 21 fights won, undefeated, with 19 perfect victories and having killed all her opponents. When she has to face Cassie Cage, at first Frost takes the lead by brutally beating Cassie, but she reacts using unpredictable movements inherited from her father, leaving Frost unconscious. The stadium manager forces Cassie to kill Frost, but at that time two members of the Black Dragon clan, Jarek and Tasia, break in. Cassie and Jacqui Briggs, who had accompanied her to the place, rescue Frost and flee. Both notice the heaviness and low temperature of Frost without knowing that she was a cryomancer, and she is removed on a stretcher by paramedics. Some time later, Frost and several others were sent by Raiden to the Lin Kuei Temple in Arctika to compete in a tournament to join the clan.
In Mortal Kombat X, Frost appears in the Lin Kuei temple along with Sub-Zero, who helps the Special Forces in their training, at the request of Johnny Cage. Frost is impatient and arrogant, refuses to help the Special Forces and hates that Sub-Zero helps them. She later attempts to kill Scorpion when Sub-Zero invites him to the Lin Kuei temple, leading the already suspicious Scorpion to believe that Sub-Zero plotted to kill him, until Sub-Zero froze Frost when she attempted to kill Scorpion from behind.
Later on, during the events of Mortal Kombat 11, Frost would later align with Kronika and her forces, believing the Titan will give her the power to control the Lin Kuei, and would sell her clan out to the Cyber Initiative, revealing to Sektor that the Lin Kuei and the Shirai Ryu were now allies. She is also mentioned as having frozen Fujin, believing that she killed him. She is seen in a hood along Kronika's forces when she makes a deal with Shao Kahn and his allies to join her. When Sub-Zero and Scorpion elect to deal with the Cyber Lin Kuei at their factory, Frost and Cyrax discuss "additional candidates" for cyberization, with Frost impatiently asking how long before they are ready before being frozen by Sub-Zero, who initially does not recognise her. After breaking out of the ice, Frost reveals that she has become a cyborg, much to the disgust of Sub-Zero. Frost is defeated by Sub-Zero and Scorpion, and left at the factory, unconscious.
After Sektor's destruction, Frost was put in command of the remaining Cyber Lin Kuei. She then reappears in Kharon's ship, which transports the Earth Warriors to the fortress of Kronika's time to face her and her armies. Frost tackles the ship along with an army of cyber ninjas, and confronts Raiden directly, blaming him for ignoring her throughout her life. However, during the subsequent duel, Frost is defeated by the thunder god, who is forced to burn out her circuits and kill her so that the army of cyber ninjas will shut down, since they were all connected to Frost through a network. In her arcade ending, Frost believes that even Kronika dismisses her, and proceeds to turn on her and gain the Hourglass. She uses it to create a history where everyone respects her. To prevent free will detract from her rule, she uses the Lin Kuei as time warriors who stamp down any resistance.
Aftermath[]
In the altered timeline of Aftermath, Frost and Geras are informed of Shang Tsung, Nightwolf and Fujin's escape from the Void. Frost brings along a squad of Cyber Lin Kuei, and confront the time displaced escapees in the Shaolin dungeon. During the battle, Nightwolf attempts to persuade her to leave Kronika's side fall of deaf ears, and Frost is beaten by the Shaman.
New Era[]
While Frost does not appear in the story mode of Mortal Kombat 1, she does appear in the gameplay as a Kameo fighter. In a arcade dialogue between Sub-Zero and General Shao, he comments on meeting his initiate, inferring that she plots to supplant him, implying that said apprentice is Frost.
Personality[]
Original Timeline[]
In the original timeline, Frost was initially loyal to Sub-Zero and the Lin-Kuei. Sadly, she possessed mental instability and was arrogant about her potential. Between these two factors, she was led to eventually try and oust Sub-Zero as grandmaster, only for her scheme to fail and her to be banished.
After her banishment, her mental state deteriorated, especially once she discovered Sub-Zero had made peace with the Lin Kuei's mortal enemy Scorpion.
After being resurrected by accident by Taven, Frost's insanity reached new heights, seeing everyone around her as her former grandmaster, though this could have been a side effect of being resurrected, as after Taven defeated her, she realized he was not Sub-Zero.
Second Timeline[]
Frost is a strong fighter with potential but lacks judgement: she cannot see the wisdom of peace. She is stubborn, confident, power hungry and feisty. Her dedication to fighting and learning is overshadowed by her arrogance and hostility towards anyone she perceives to be greater than her. Headstrong and driven, her abilities are eclipsed only by her overconfidence.
Sub-Zero lets her stay in the clan and at his side hoping that one day she will attain perspective and enlightenment through the experience of battle. Frost is fearless, bold, independent. What made Frost so tough was her hard life as an orphan in a slum where she had to fend for herself and to utilize brute force to get she desires (or to take back what is taken from her).
While Frost is strong, she has too much pride. If Frost chose to give up when she was in living the slums, and if it wasn't for her determination and persistence, she would have never been able to get to where she is now. While her drive helped her to become a skilled fighter, Sub-Zero knows that Frost could become greater if she wasn't so quick to rage. This proves that while Frost is a skilled warrior, she hinders her abilities because of her selfish nature.
Despite her pride, she betrayed her grandmaster and forsook her clan by allying with Kronika; she even sacrificed her honour, as she allowed her colleagues to be unwilling converted into cyborgs, as well as becoming a unique cyborg herself. She attempted to justify the sacrifices as necessary to defeat the Shirai-Ryu, displaying how hatred had shaped her decisions, rather than righteousness or protecting the clan. Thus, showing even with her strong ideals, what she craved most was power, thereby betrayed everything she claimed to stand for just to obtain the greatest possible power.
