The Frowning Friends are the titular main antagonists of the Smiling Friends episode "Frowing Friends". The organization consists of two members, Grim and Gnarly, who are evil counterparts of the show's main protagonists, Pim and Charlie. Unlike the latter two, members of Smiling Friends Inc., whose mission is to spread happiness, the Frowning Friends are determined to make people depressed and miserable.
Grim is voiced by series' co-creator Michael Cusack, who also voices Bosnian Homer, James, Rex, Mr. Frog, Ketchup, Witch Hand, Plump Demon, Jeremy, and the Skeleton Pirate Captain in the same series. Gnarly is voiced by series' co-creator Zach Hadel, who also voices DJ Spit, Satan, Mip, Jason, Mr. Peanut, and Mr. Landlord in the same series.
Biography[]
The Frowning Friends were formed at an unknown point after the Smiling Friends. Pim suggests that now they have competition, he and Charlie should take the initiative to make people smile instead of sitting around waiting for assignments. However, upon approaching several different people, they find that the Frowning Friends have already gotten to them. This includes telling aspiring rapper DJ Spit that his music is no good and that he should give up, as well as making Mr. Man feel bad about the shape of his head. On both occasions, Pim and Charlie are accused of being Grim and Gnarly and threatened with a gun.
They then encounter a depressed three-dimensional creature named 3D Squelton, whom they momentarily cheer up by convincing him to pursue his interest in balloons. However, Grim and Gnarly show up and discourage Squelton from following this aspiration out of fear of failure, even using the global helium crisis to convince him that the idea won’t work.
Later, Grim is seen giving a speech to a crowd about how it is easier to embrace nihilism instead of trying to improve their lives because they could fail. He also expresses a desire to kill all the Puerto Ricans on the planet, though he backtracks when the crowd is unreceptive to this idea (except for Mr. Man, who supports it), though they quickly brush past it. Pim attempts to counter his argument, but Grim orders Allan and Glep, who defected from Smiling Friends for the better 401(k) offered by Frowning Friends, to seize him.
Mr. Boss, who has been suffering from mental instability due to jealousy of the Frowning Friends' idea, finally snaps and storms the building with an assault rifle. Grim immediately breaks down and begs for his life, causing the crowd to realize that his "nothing matters" philosophy is a sham, and they leave. Mr. Boss cheers up Grim and Gnarly by telling them that their idea was so good it drove him insane with jealousy, and they realize that they actually enjoy being happy. However, they are quickly killed by the Renaissance Men firing arrows at them.
Members[]
Grim[]
Grim is Pim's counterpart and the more vocal of the two main members. It is unknown whether he is the founder of the Frowning Friends or if there is an unseen counterpart to Mr. Boss who outranks him. Nevertheless, he seems to be the shot-caller between himself and Gnarly. He is also a racist, wishing to eradicate Puerto Ricans from the planet. While he talks a big game and acts as if he embraces a nihilistic philosophy, it does not take much to expose this as a sham. The sight of Mr. Boss with a gun immediately makes him beg for his life and wet his pants in fear, revealing that he is nothing but a cowardly hypocrite. As Pim's counterpart, the two greatly resemble each other, with the main differences being that Grim's skin is purple rather than pink, he has three hairs on the top of his head, and he wears a black coat over his white shirt.
Gnarly[]
Gnarly is Charlie's counterpart and seems to be more of a follower for the most part. He does not speak as much as Grim, and it is unknown whether he shares the same racist attitude toward Puerto Ricans. He also appears to be braver than Grim, as he does not break down in fear when threatened by Mr. Boss and even declares Grim's cowering to be "kinda cringe." He resembles Charlie but is thinner, has a light beard, a smaller nose, and squinty eyes instead of Charlie's beady ones.
Allan and Glep[]
Allan and Glep briefly join the Frowning Friends as enforcers after learning that the rival company offers a better 401(k) plan than Smiling Friends. While Allan seems to be doing his job and apologizes to Pim and Charlie for detaining them, Glep is much more enthusiastic about it, giving Charlie a painful kick in the shin with no provocation. After the Frowning Friends go out of business, Allan and Glep rejoin Smiling Friends.
