~ Frye in her intro in "Return of the Mammalians" |
Frye Onaga is a major antagonist in Splatoon 3's story mode, Return of the Mammalians. By day, she is a member of the famed band and idol trio Deep Cut, who host the Anarchy Splatcast in the Splatlands. When not on stage, however, she and her bandmates illegally loot scraps and artifacts from the ruins of human structures in the nearby desert, which they sell to financially support their hometown.
This puts her at odds with the player, the new Agent 3 who accidentally intrudes on their territory while trying to find Cap'n Cuttlefish, as well as receiving radio signals from pieces of old machinery which were mistaken for help signals. In the final stage of the game, the Squid Sisters decide to give the pieces of old machinery to Deep Cut to placate them, who then assist Agent 3 and Smallfry with defeating Mr. Grizz. She and her bandmates are currently under the employment of Callie and Marie and are working on musical collaborations together.
She is voiced by Laura Yokozawa.
Appearance[]
Frye is an Inkling with a dark skin tone. Her eye markings extend into sharp points beyond her face. She also has long ears, with her right one being pierced with eel tooth piercings. She also has triangular eyebrows, a large forehead and has shoulder length yellow hair, with one tentacle being tinted purple at the tips and swept to the side. She also has a blue tongue and golden irises like Pearl, Callie and Marie.
She wears a yellow crop top and a transparent yellow shawl, as well as off white pants with several holes outlined in blue, as well as a golden charm around her waist. She does not wear shoes, instead having her feet wrapped in cloth exposing her toes which like her fingers, are tinted indigo. When she was still a student, Frye wore her hair in a ponytail, using a red scrunchie. She wore her school uniform and white shoes.
For the Grand Festival, Frye changes her hairstyle to having two horn-shaped buns on the top of her head wrapped in chrome wire. She wears a white bolero, a separate silver tube top and shorts with straps, white lace-less calf-high boots and a silver band on her left ear.
Personality[]
Frye is a loud-mouthed and enthusiastic person, often hyping up the Anarchy Splatcasts when they begin and acting dramatically when she is surprised by something such as Splatfest results, often stumbling during her excitable dances during Splatfests. She is also prone to bursts of anger as shown in her boss fight when she yells at the eels for attacking her. Despite this, she is in fact quite a good friend to her bandmates and is shown to be tolerant of Shiver's teasing. She also seems somewhat pragmatic, offering Agent 3 to join her side and share the spoils instead of battling against her for the scrap.
Biography[]
Background[]
Frye descends from the Onaga clan, a clan of Inklings with a powerful connection to moray eels. She is stated to have two younger sisters who are twins and a younger brother. Growing up, Frye was raised by her grandparents due to her parents always being busy. She also became acquaintances with her future bandmates Shiver and Big Man thanks to their clans always getting together, but she only became closer to them after the three of them decided to form the band Deep Cut in middle school, with Shiver and Frye being the vocalists and Big Man helping with instrumentals.
A few years back before the events of the game, Deep Cut, famed for their chaotic and rowdy nature, were selected to host the Anarchy Splatcast, triggering their rise to fame. Eager to give back to the community, Frye and her bandmates begin looting the ruins of human civilization located around the Splatlands to raise money for the poor, though they do keep some profits for themselves.
Splatoon 3[]
Frye and the rest of Deep Cut are initially seen announcing the disappearance of the Great Zapfish on TV. While she does not appear for the entire Crater section of the Story Mode, she is seen with Shiver and Big Man wearing their masks eyeing Agent 3 suspiciously after the DJ Octavio post-fight cutscene.
She and Deep Cut appear at the end of the first site of Alterna Future Utopia Island wearing their masks, throwing them away before warning Squidbeak Splatoon to back off, stating that Alterna is theirs to loot and they're not allowed to trespass.
Frye appears as the final boss of Site 2: Cozy & Safe Factory. She initially offers Agent 3 to join her side and share in the spoils, but after she is refused, she hops onto an Octostomp husk and summons her eels from within. During her first phase, she attacks by sending out eels which shoot globs of ink at them, and shooting eels like missiles. They are required to splat the eels wearing masks, which return to her and knock the husk out of balance, stunning Frye and allowing Agent 3 to climb the husk and splat her.
Frye respawns and comments on their skill before engaging in the fight once more, this time with a new attack that sends eels out in a tornado-like fashion around her. Once again, Agent 3 must splat the masked eels, disorientating her and leaving her vulnerable to attacks.
In her final phase, Frye has an additional attack which involves the eels assuming a fish-like formation and hounding down Agent 3 while she spins around the arena, leaving trails of ink. Once the Agent 3 splats all the masked eels and Frye, she notes their strength and tells them that this isn't the last they'll see of Deep Cut, before forcibly exploding the husk, sending her and the eels flying away.
Frye and the rest of Deep Cut appear again after Agent 3, Callie, Marie and the Captain all assist in using the scrap Deep Cut were guarding to build a lawnmower-like device, which the Captain uses to trim away all the Fuzzy Ooze surrounding the space shuttle launch station where Cap'n Cuttlefish is being held, collapsing from injury or exhaustion afterwards. They demand that the device is handed over to them, to which Marie obliges as they have finished using it. Frye and her bandmates are shocked but pleased, thanking the Squidbeak Splatoon and explaining their motives, leading the Squid Sisters to gain a respect for them. Afterwards, they join Agent 3's party and follow them up the launch platform where they encounter Mr. Grizz and a seemingly dead and dehydrated Cuttlefish. As he explains his motives, Mr. Grizz blasts off into space on the rocket so Deep Cut all assist in allowing Agent 3 to give chase, with Frye summoning her eels to form an ink whirlpool going all the way up to space, Shiver providing Master Mega for them to ride and pursue the bear and Big Man lending a space helmet to Agent 3. Cuttlefish is also fortunately revived after the Captain sheds a small tear and rehydrates him.
Together with Shiver, Big Man, Callie and Marie, and DJ Octavio, Frye performs the Calamari Inktation 3MIX during the final phase of Mr. Grizz's boss fight, empowering Smallfry with marine life energy and transforming it into Hugefry, allowing it to hold him off while Agent 3, riding on DJ Octavio's mech, vacuums up the Fuzzy Ooze before launching it all back, blowing up the rocket and sending the Ursine Anomaly into orbit and to his defeat.
Afterwards, Frye and Deep Cut can be found back at Splatsville announcing the Great Zapfish's return, albeit with a slightly different appearance. They are currently under the Squid Sisters' employment, making music together and if Agent 3 zooms in on them with the camera function in their studio, Frye, Shiver and Big Man will smile and wave at them.
Trivia[]
- Based on some dialogue during Salmon Run stage announcements, Frye enjoys taking shifts at Grizzco to destress, but constantly ends up getting mobbed by smallfries and needs Shiver to save her.
- The size of Frye's forehead has sparked debate over her design, with some claiming that her large forehead is a reference to how some cultures in South Asia see large foreheads as a sign of beauty, while some make fun of this design feature, doing things such as using editing tools to play tic-tac-toe on pictures of her forehead.
- One of Frye's soundbites during the Anarchy Splacasts sounds somewhat like an exasperated expression of dropping an F-bomb, causing her further popularity in the Splatoon fanbase's meme community.
- Frye acts as Deep Cut's choreographer and in the recording studio, she and Shiver are the main singers while Big Man provides background vocals, as well as mixing and composing the background tracks.
- Like the other idols, Frye is implied to have a favorite weapon, with hers being the Splatana as she mentions liking them.
- Despite Frye's singing having a Middle Eastern or Indian style, her voice actress Laura Yokozawa is a jazz singer.
- Frye summons her moray eels using an Indian pungi, which is the flute most snake charmers use to charm snakes.
- In the Japanese version, Frye speaks in a pattern similar to the Chūgoku dialect of Hiroshima which, while mostly associated with old men, is also considered "jolly', exemplifying her carefree nature.
- If one listens closely to Deep Cut's introduction, they can hear that when Frye throws her mask away, it actually hits Smallfry on accident as one can hear the Salmonid's yelp.
- It's revealed in Frye's dialogue in Anarchy Splatcasts that she uses her eels as transportation, even parking them inside parking lots when she goes to work.
- Like her bandmates, Frye represents one of the three poisons of the mind in Buddhist teaching, with hers being the Snake poison, symbolizing aversion and anger. This can be inferred from how her remix of Anarchy Poisons is the Snake Mix.
- Thanks to her blue tinted tentacles and fingers, longer ears and eye markings, it’s likely that Frye is based off vampire squids in appearance.
- As seen from the reveal picture of the idols’ Grand Festival outfits, Frye stands as tall as Shiver even when slightly bent over, making it likely that she’s as tall or taller than Marina.
