~ Fukubei's most famous quote.

Hattori, better known by his childhood nickname Fukubei[1], is one of the two main antagonists (alongside Katsumata) of the Naoki Urasawa manga series 20th Century Boys.

He is Kenji Endo's arch-rival in school, who had more attention than him. As Friend, he is a mysterious and elusive man who leads the Friendship Party, deceiving people that he was a supernatural being while plotting to rule the world.

Biography[]

Fukubei was a boy who grew up with no friends, ignored by his classmates, with their attention focused on Kenji. Because of that, Fukubei grew jealous of his popular status and wanted attention for himself as well. One day, Fukubei snuck into a base where Kenji and his friends were creating their prophecy book, and he met Kiyoshi Sada, better known as SadaKiyo, a masked boy who also snuck in. SadaKiyo asked Fukubei to be his friend, and Fukubei agreed, but he never revealed his real name, only referring to himself as "Friend".

Fukubei creates his own group of friends, consisting of SadaKiyo, Yamane and Katsumata. After reading the prophecy book created by Kenji and his friends, they decided to create their own version of the book. As an adult, Fukubei developed his "Friend" persona into being a cult leader and took advantage of people when they believed him to be a savior. He used magic tricks to make others believe that he was a supernatural being who will bring salvation to the world. In the 90s, Fukubei seduced Kiriko Endo, who was Kenji's older sister, into making a virus that would destroy humanity and a vaccine for it.

Eventually, Kiriko gave birth to Fukubei's daughter, Kanna Endo, who lived with Kenji in her early years. Katsumata and Fukubei would go on experimenting on Kanna in the womb, instilling her special powers. Upon unleashing the virus, Fukubei framed Kenji and his group for his crimes and succeeds in ruling the remains of the world.

However, Fukubei was later assassinated and killed in the science room of his school by Yamane. Shortly after his death, Katsumata took his place as the second Friend and continue Fukubei's work to the world.

Trivia[]

  • In the "perfect edition" of the manga it's revealed that Fukubei died during spring break as a child, and Katsumata was the only Friend, impersonating Fukubei and carrying out all of his actions as well. Some believe this to be the true, intended reveal of Friend's identity, but it's heavily debated and most still go with Fukubei being the first Friend.
