Fulgrim the Illuminator, also known as the Phoenician, the Palatine Phoenix, and the Daemon Primarch of Slaanesh, is a major antagonist in the expanded lore of the miniature wargame Warhammer 40,000. He is the Primarch of the IIIrd Legion, The Emperor's Children.

One of the twenty Primarchs created by the Emperor of Mankind to lead the Space Marine armies of the Imperium of Man, Fulgrim was snatched away by the four Chaos Gods as a baby and flung across the galaxy. The Primarch landed on the isolated mining planet Chemos, where he was found and adopted by a policeman. Fulgrim, like all his brother Primarchs, was a prodigy who single-handedly revitalized the economy of Chemos and ushered the planet into a new age of art and culture.

Fulgrim was reunited with his father when the Emperor came to Chemos. The Emperor of Mankind had launched a Great Crusade across the galaxy to unite the territories of mankind and search for his missing Primarchs in the process. Fulgrim pledged his loyalty to his father and as such was given command of the Emperor's Children, a Space Marine Legion created using Fulgrim's genetic template. With his Space Marine sons by his side, Fulgrim waged war against the enemies of the Emperor during the Great Crusade.

At one point, the Emperor's Children defeated a corrupted Xenos race known as the Laer who had worshipped the Chaos God of Pleasure Slaanesh. In a temple dedicated to Slaanesh, Fulgrim discovered a potent blade that housed the soul of a Greater Daemon of Slaanesh. Fulgrim, not understanding the nature of Chaos, took the Blade of the Laer for his own. The Daemon within the blade whispered to Fulgrim, slowly corrupting him into the service of Chaos.

Warmaster Horus, a Primarch who had also been corrupted by Chaos, convinced Fulgrim to pledge fealty to the Chaos Gods and denounce the Emperor of Mankind and the Imperium. The Phoenician found a patron deity in Slaanesh, who offered him and his corrupted Legion the perfection they so greatly desired. Horus then tasked Fulgrim with corrupting Ferrus Manus, the Primarch whom Fulgrim was closest with. Fulgrim was unable to convince his loyalist brother, and their strong bond fell apart.

Overtime a full half of the Space Marine Legions rallied under Horus and a galaxy-wide civil war erupted between the forces of Chaos and the loyalists. Loyalist still in traitor Legions were purged in the Istvaan III Atrocity, and during the Drop Site Massacre on Istvaan V against other Loyalist Legions, Fulgrim beheaded his beloved brother Ferrus at the height of the brutal fighting. Slaanesh later awarded Fulgrim for his devotion by transforming him into an immortal monster known as a Daemon Prince.

Ultimately, the civil war known later as the Horus Heresy failed. Horus was slain and the Emperor was mortally wounded. A majority of the Traitor Legions retreated into the Immaterium that the forces of Chaos called home. Over the following millennia, the Emperor's Children lost most of its unity and broke into many disjointed Warbands of Chaos Space Marines. Fulgrim himself rarely participated in attacks on the Imperium, instead retreating into obscurity for many years. However, thousands of years after the Horus Heresy, Fulgrim was summoned to the long-dead world of Istvaan III by a signal sent from deep under the surface. Arriving at an abandoned hangar bay deep underground, Fulgrim was confronted by none other than Rylanor, a Loyalist Dreadnought of the Emperor's Children who survived the Istvaan III Atrocity on sheer desire for vengeance against the traitorous Primarch. Rylanor detonated a still-intact Virus Bomb on Fulgrim, dying in the blast, but Fulgrim survived. However, before detonating, Rylanor had rejected Fulgrim's offers to be remade by Slaanesh, and defied Fulgrim's imagined magnificence, deeply wounding Fulgrim's pride.

It perpetually emitted the same potent flame that it was created in. The weapon was tirelessly forged over several months and was meant to prove that Manus was a superior craftsman to Fulgrim, who in turn forged the hammer Forgebreaker to prove his own skill. Upon seeing what the other created, Fulgrim and Ferrus declared each other the victor and exchanged weapons. Although he initially used it as his preferred weapon, Fulgrim later began wielding the Blade of the Laer. However the Phoenician did later use Fireblade in his first confrontation with Ferrus Manus upon turning traitor, during which the sword was shattered. The shattered blade was later reforged by Manus, who wielded it in tandem with Forgebreaker against Fulgrim during the Drop Site Massacre of Istvaan V.

Trivia[]

  • Fulgrim was named after an ancient deity who was worshipped by the people of his homeworld.
  • Fulgrim bears more than a few similarities with Griffith from Berserk, due to both of them being fallen heroes who turned to evil thanks to an artifact of doom, betrayed their best friends, sacrificed their own comrades, and became demon lords serving a greater force of evil(that was, coincidently enough, formed by the emotions and behaviour of mortals).
