Villain Overview

Dojyaaa~~n!
~ Funny Valentine's catchphrase, best translated as "Ta-daaa!".
My heart and actions are utterly unclouded! They are all those of "justice".
~ Funny Valentine
That is all because in the reality of this human world, it is impossible for every person to be happy. In the shadow of happiness there is cruelty. There is always a balance between the positives and negatives. That's what the Holy Corpse is!! For argument's sake, think of what'd happen were it handed over to some rule-flaunting low-life bastard of the other side of the world. He would only think of using it for things he wants, low-life things. One can only imagine what deplorable events would then be store for the future of this country.... That is one scenario which I must prevent. As president, it is my sworn duty...! In this world to guarantee the safety of the people of my country. That is what it all comes down to!
~ Funny Valentine

Funny Valentine is the main antagonist of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Steel Ball Run and a supporting character in the story mode for JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Eyes of Heaven. He is a veteran of the American Civil War and would later become the twenty-third President of the United States. Funny Valentine wields the Stand known as Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap, or D4C for short.

In reality, he is the mastermind of the Steel Ball Run horse race, as he watches the competition from behind the scenes and hopes to collect all of the Corpse Parts to use the holy relic to further the United States's interests in the world.

He was voiced by Yasuyuki Kase in Japanese in JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: All-Star Battle, Eyes of Heaven and All-Star Battle R.

Biography[]

Childhood[]

Funny Valentine scars

Funny Valentine's scars.

Not much is known in great detail about Funny Valentine's childhood, except that he was born on September 20, 1847 and held a high respect for justice at an early age and also held high respect for his father who fought for the United States Army.

One day, however, Funny and his mother were confronted by a soldier named Captain Valentine; a friend of his father, who informed them that their father and husband was captured by the enemy and tortured to death, as he refused to betray his country no matter how much he was tortured. The soldier also gave Funny a handkerchief that belonged to their father and husband that had the date and birth of Funny on it , revealing that his father kept it with him during all the torture he endured and kept it placed in his eye to avoid it being taken. From that point on, Funny kept the handkerchief with him at all times as a symbol of his (and his father's) undying loyalty to their country.

At a later point in time, Funny's mother would remarry to Captain Valentine, making him Funny's stepfather and granting Funny the "Valentine" surname.

American Civil War[]

At some point in his service, Funny Valentine was captured by the enemy. During that time, his captors' main form of torture consisted of brutally whipping his back, the scars he received because of this resemble that of the American flag.

Although it was never fully revealed if Valentine fought for the Union or Confederacy in the Civil War (albeit it is implied he fought for the Union) , his unit, the 26th Calvary Unit, went missing in the Arizona desert while training. With the exception of Valentine, the whole unit died out due to either exhaustion or dehydration. Just as Valentine collapsed, he passed out on the Holy Corpse's Heart and was shortly after rescued. He attributed his rescue onto the Corpse's Heart and set out to find the remaining pieces.

JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Steel Ball Run[]

Funny Valentine set up the Steel Ball Run race, with promoter Steven Steel, as a ploy so he could locate and obtain the remaining eight parts of the Holy Corpse. Due to his status as president of the United States, Valentine remained in his train cart for majority of the race and would merely send out his hand picked subordinates to retrieve the parts and ensure they didn't fall into anyone else's hands. Once all nine of the Corpse parts were brought together, Valentine planned to use its powers to deflect all misfortunes that would befall his country to other foreign countries, in order to ensure that the United States was the greatest country on Earth.

Once the arc's protagonists, Gyro Zeppeli and Johnny Joestar, come into possession of the left arm of the Holy Corpse, Valentine begins to crackdown on the duo and sends more elite subordinates, who are mostly stand users as well, after them.

When the race reaches Philadelphia, Valentine, who has used his stand to replace his original stout body with a much more muscular and fit version of himself, uncovers Lucy Steel's attempt of stealing the Corpse parts. The parts he collected wind up inside Lucy and Valentine intends to keep them in her until the time comes to utilize their abilities. It is also at this point that Valentine decides it is time to personally deal with those who conspired against him. With the help of D-I-S-C-O, Valentine attempts to assassinate Johnny, Gyro, Diego Brando and Wekapipo in one fell swoop, which ultimately ends with Wekapipo being killed and with Johnny, Diego and D-I-S-C-O injured. This was also the first time Funny Valentine's powers are fully explained as he switches his body with another Funny Valentine to survive a wound inflicted by Johnny.

With all of the Corpse parts in his possession, and using Lucy as a catalyst, Valentine brings her aboard a train with him to awaken the true powers of his stand, as well as to escape an incoming Diego and Hot Pants. When the two finally do catch up to Valentine's train, they are confronted by a series of Valentine clones, as well as the man himself. After a lengthy fight with Diego, Valentine is almost run over by the train but manages to slip between the tracks into another dimension, thus saving himself and coming back as an unwounded version of himself. Diego on the other hand, isn't quite as lucky and is cut in half by the train's wheels.

Once back in the train, Lucy's stand takes form and awakens the true power of Valentine's Stand, the ability to deflect misfortune. With his newfound ability, Hot Pants is quickly killed by the president and he begins his preparations for the oncoming fight against Gyro and Johnny.

The heroes eventually do make it to Valentine's location, and begin their final battle outside the train and Atlantic Ocean. Valentine showcases his newly found powers by having each of Johnny's bullets deflected to someone else somewhere else in the world, killing them instead of the president. Gyro then prepares to utilize the power of the Super Spin but is stopped momentarily when Valentine inflicts a small non-fatal wound upon him, which slowly travels to Gyro's heart. However, the wound doesn't move quite fast enough to stop Gyro's attack, and it ends up smashing through Valentine's reflective barrier, causing half of his body to age rapidly. Gyro goes for a second attack at Valentine, seemingly killing him, but only causes the other half of his body to age. Valentine then returns once more with a new body and finishes off Gyro once and for all.

Funny Valentine's demise.

With Gyro's death, Johnny desperately tries to shoot Valentine, but with no success. Valentine then shoots Johnny's horse, Slow Dancer, as to not allow his opponent to activate the Super Spin himself. Despite this, Johnny then uses Gyro's steel ball to heal Slow Dancer and gets kicked in air, unlocking the Super Spin technique for himself. With the Super Spin, Johnny shoots a Super Spin embedded shot through Valentine's reflective barrier causing the president to spin infinitely no matter how many times he switches bodies.

After what felt like an eternity, Valentine returns to his own dimension long enough to attempt a bribe with Johnny, with the promises of another dimension's Gyro Zeppeli, to convince him to end the eternal spin. It is also here that Valentine explains the story of his father and the importance of the handkerchief he carries with him to ensure Johnny that he is not attempted to trick him. Johnny believes the president, but gives him one final test. He knocks Valentine's original pistol toward him and tells the president to pick it up, because if Valentine brought another dimension's pistol with him the two pistols would be destroyed. Johnny proved to be correct and shot Valentine one final time, killing him for good. As the final stretch of the race begins, a new enemy appears in the form of a Diego Brando from another universe, being revealed that, before to attempt his gambit on Johnny, Valentine found a living Diego in another universe and convinced him to collect the corpse, using the last of his power to bring him into the base universe.

Since his body was washed away by the Atlantic Ocean, no one (with the exception of Johnny Joestar, Lucy Steel, and Steven Steel) actually knew that he passed away. It was even reported that following his disappearance, his approval rating went as high as ninety-one percent. The world never learned the president's true intentions.

JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Eyes of Heaven[]

Funny Valentine appears as one of the secondary antagonists in JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Eyes of Heaven.

While he was finding a way to escape Johnny's Infinite Spin, he used his Stand to jump through other dimensions until he enters into a world where he meets an alternate version of DIO. DIO then removes the Infinite Spin while Valentine tells him about the Corpse Parts and other timelines. Valentine then aids DIO to help conquer the world and all possible realities. Valentine appears in Chapter 7 where confronts Johnny and Jonathan in the Philadelphia Coastline. He then appears alongside a corrupted Gyro in Rocky Mountain Village. Both of them got defeated afterwards and escaped. In Chapter 10, Valentine appears again in Air Supplena Island where he confronts the Joestars. Valentine asks Jotaro to fight him to test Jotaro's Stand ability. It is revealed that Valentine was only working for DIO just to look for someone to defeat him. In Chapter 11, Valentine grows weak and was transferred to DIO's location. With DIO growing suspicious of Valentine he asked about what Valentine told the Joestars. Valentine then attacks DIO, only to be swiftly wiped from existence.

Jorge Joestar[]

Funny Valentine and D4C (Jorge Joestar)

In the non-canon light Novel Jorge Joestar. there are various versions of Valentine between the 2nd and 37th universes, with one of them having a son named Funnier Valentine and a grandson named The Funniest Valentine. The original Valentine also lives in the second universe, and like his original counterpart, he has Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap as his Stand. Meanwhile, the 37th universe's Valentine wields Singing in the Rain, a Stand with a frog-like appearance that can be stick itself onto surfaces.

When Jorge arrives in London, Valentine greets Enrico Pucci, as Valentine later says that Manhattan Island is the final "Rhinoceros Beetle". Valentine gives Pucci hints about the fourteen words, and with his help, Pucci assumes that the two "Singularities" are his connection with himself. Pucci knows Funny Valentine well in his own universe, but not this version of Funny from another universe, thus creating a "Spiral Staircase" and meeting Dio Brando.

Before the fight between Kars and Dio, Valentine takes off Dio's cape and teleports Jorge. Before it could cover him, though, Lisa Lisa punches Funny's cheek with the Ripple. However, the cape falls onto Jorge anyways and he is teleported to a parallel world along with Funny. Funny's face is momentarily swollen, but Jorge notices that he has another version in a parallel universe/ Here, he is killed by an parallel version of Kars, who then makes a fake version of Valentine at the Piccadilly Circus.

Dio later starts accelerating time, as Valentine and The Funniest discover that Dio is headed for the past beyond the future. They reveal that the Valentine family have two duties as leaders of the United States, with the first being to intervene in the Steel Ball Run race and their second is to protect the secret held underground at Trinity Church.

The 37th universe's Valentine arrives on a helicopter, with a message from the arm. However, he nearly falls to his death due to the wind, and slides on top of Morioh's barrier. There, he jumps off into a monstrous version of Antonio Torres' stomach while activating her stand in order to sacrifice himself from Made in Heaven Ultimate Requiem, in which results into a explosion that kills over 36 people and gives birth to new universes.

In the end, Valentine shown to have survived the explosion, as he later returned to the United States with his family in the helicopter.

Appearance[]

At first, Funny Valentine is shown to be a rather overweight body type, but after taking the Saint's ribs, his build shirts to be more slim and muscular. Valentine has long, curled, blond hair and blue eyes. For clothing, Funny Valentine wears a large frilled coat, a shirt, pants, shoes, belt, and gloves, all of which matching the color of his coat (Usually grey or pink). Funny Valentine also has large scars scrawled across his back in the shape of the United State Of America's flag.

Personality[]

Suppose that you were sitting down at this table. The napkins are in front of you, which napkin would you take? The one on your left? Or the one on your right? The one on your left side? Or the one on your right side? Usually you would take the one on your left side. That is correct too. But in a larger sense on society, that is wrong. Perhaps I could even substitute society with the Universe. The correct answer is that It is determined by the one who takes his or her own napkin first. …Yes? If the first one takes the napkin to their right, then there’s no choice but for others to also take the right napkin. The same goes for the left. Everyone else will take the napkin to their left, because they have no other option. This is society… Who are the ones that determine the price of land first? There must have been someone who determined the value of money, first. The size of the rails on a train track? The magnitude of electricity? Laws and Regulations? Who was the first to determine these things? Did we all do it, because this is a Republic? Or was it Arbitrary? NO! The one who took the napkin first determined all of these things! The rules of this world are determined by that same principle of "right or left"?! In a Society like this table, a state of equilibrium, once one makes the first move, everyone must follow! In every era, this World has been operating by this napkin principle. And the one who "takes the napkin first" must be someone who is respected by all. It’s not that anyone can fulfill this role… Those that are despotic or unworthy will be scorned. And those are the losers. In the case of this table, the eldest or the "Master of the party" will take the napkin first… Because everyone respects those individuals.
~ Funny Valentine

Despite his patriotism and overall good goals, Funny Valentine is willing to do anything he can to get what he wants, no matter how immoral it is. He is determined to obtain the Corpse parts by any means necessary, but his favorite tends to be militaristically sending out his men to kill and steal the parts from anyone who obtains them. He also demonstrated that he is not afraid to kill his own men for their failures, as was the case with Axl RO. His ruthlessness might derive from the strong sense of justice he acquired at a young age that he carried with him into adulthood.

Valentine has also demonstrated that he is an absolute patriot to his country, as his motive to get the Corpse parts is deflect any and all misfortune in the United States to a different spot in the world and ensure that the United States is the greatest country on Earth. He is actually so much of a patriot that he was turned on sexually by the fact he was in the room that the Declaration of Independence was written in. However, his patriotism borders onto xenophobia, since he's willing to let any other country be hit with misfortunes without even thinking about it at all. He also had a pedophilic infatuation with Lucy Steel, when she disguised as his wife, Valentine attempted to sexually assault her and declared that she would bear his child, saying that he wanted a dynasty to ensure the United States would remain at the top, and upon discovering her true identity he threatned that if she attempted to take her life he would kill her family members as well as Steven Steel.

Valentine also likes to take naps during the afternoon, with even his bodyguards refusing to annoy him when he sleeps.

Powers and Abilities[]

Allowing neighboring worlds to exist simultaneously in the same location. That is my Stand ability, "Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap".
~ Funny Valentine
D4C EOH

Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap

With his Stand Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap/D4C, Funny Valentine can freely move between infinite alternate dimensions, given he has completely enclosed his body. In order to jump into another dimension, he must put himself in between two objects, being also able to carry other people with him. With this, he can infinitely swap his body out with another, making him seemingly invincible. If he brings a object or person from another universe, once they get close to their counterpart in the current universe both begin to fuse, being annihilated in the process. Only Valentine himself is immune to this effect, being able to freely interact with other Valentines and bring them with him.

D4C Love Train

Funny Valentine using Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap- Love Train.

When Lucy's stand awakened D4C's true abilities, he gains the stand Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap- Love Train, which creates a reflective barrier around him that will redirect any misfortune that comes his way to somewhere else in the world. Since the corpse only exists in the base universe, D4C only exists there as well.

Trivia[]

  • Funny Valentine's name is a reference to the Richard Rodgers song My Funny Valentine while his stand Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap is a reference to the AC/DC song and album with the same name.
  • Funny Valentine is the first main Stand User villain in JoJo's Bizarre Adventure series (excluding Kars, who never became a Stand User) whose ability is not associated with time. He's also the first villain in the series to not have any direct or indirect connection to Dio.
  • The concept behind Funny Valentine originally came from Araki's interest in the desire of a President who fights others, which itself was derived from Independence Day.
  • The scene where a young Funny Valentine receives his dead father's handkerchief by a soldier is possibly a reference to Pulp Fiction, where a similar scene plays out with a young Butch Coolidge receiving his similarly late father's gold watch by a veteran from the Vietnam War.
  • The reason why Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap has such long "ears" is that Araki desired to have its silhouette stand out from the other Stands used by main antagonists in JoJo's Bizarre Adventure.
  • Despite the fact the localized name itself isn't its true localized name (only being known as D4C in the localization, with what the alias standing for being unknown), Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap's assumed localized name in JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: All Star Battle and JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Eyes of Heaven, Filthy Acts at a Reasonable Price, has been the target of many memes due to it's absurdity.
  • Funny Valentine is the only antagonist in JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Eyes of Heaven to oppose Heaven Ascension DIO in the storyline.
  • Valentine is often considered to be the most sympathetic and best-written villain in the JoJo series, due to his tragic past and how he genuinely wanted to do what was best for his country in spite of his evil.
