The dragon rebellion will be successful. We shall scourge this world with fire and leave no wretched human alive, not a single one. For over the last hundred years, I have been looking into the past and into the future, and I tell you this, Boy… humans and dragons cannot live together… Look down, Boy, look down at the REAL world. In this world, my dragon-brothers are everywhere in chains. Humans are enslaving us like dogs… They are riding us like horses… They are removing our fire and clipping our wings and breaking our hearts. There is no longer room on our planet for dragon and human. And when I look into the future, I see we are running out of time. I also see that if I do not stop you, YOU, Hiccup, will be the end of us all… YOU will send us into our final oblivion… If you grow to manhood, that will spell the end of us. And so I will call the dragons far and wide, from the depths of the ocean and the ends of the earth, and we shall fight the final battle before it is too late.
~ Furious denouncing Hiccup's peaceful ideals and announcing the Dragon Rebellion.

Furious is the secondary antagonist of the How to Train Your Dragon book series. He is a Seadragonus Giganticus Maximus, leader of all dragons and blood brother of both Hiccup Horrendous Haddock II and Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III. Once a passive and good natured dragon, Furious swore vengeance against humanity after his blood brother Hiccup was slain at the hands of his father Grimbeard, causing him to develop into the cynical and misanthropic monster he is today. After being released by Hiccup, he starts the 2nd Dragon Rebellion to exterminate humans from the Barbaric Archipelago.

In the audiobook, Furious is voiced by David Tennant.

Biography[]

Backstory[]

Furious and his brother, Hiccup Horrendous Haddock II, who got banished by his real father were adopted and raised by Grimler Dragons. One day, while adventuring together, Hiccup and Furious encounter Hiccup's birth father, the King of the Wilderwest Grimbeard the Ghastly, who had abandoned him years ago in the mountains as he was named a runt. However, seeing as Hiccup was still alive, he accepted him back into Viking society and raised him as his own son, although Hiccup would still keep in contact with Furious and his dragon friends. From there, Hiccup would grow into a charismatic and charming man, muscular and excellent at Viking savagery, yet at heart kindly and compassionate to all, freeing Grimbeard's slaves on many occasions and to strengthen his bond with Furious, he even gave himself the Dragonmark, an unremovable tattoo symbolising the pact between dragon and human. This enraged Grimbeard so much he renamed the Dragonmark the Slavemark and used it as a symbol for all slaves.

One day, Hiccup, knowing that Grimbeard was not a soft man, decided that to convince his father to make peace with the dragons, he and Furious would lead the dragons in a procession of power to showcase that they could be formidable allies. However, Grimbeard's second son Thugheart, jealous of Hiccup's talents, tricked him into thinking Hiccup was leading a dragon rebellion. When the procession arrived, Grimbeard, who was playing chess with Hiccup, was convinced that Thugheart was right and in a quick movement, drew his sword Stormblade. Furious tries to block the sword but as he leapt too late, the sword pierced through Hiccup and dealt a mortal wound. Enraged, he attempts to kill Grimbeard with his fire but with his dying breath, Hiccup begs of him to spare his father. Realising his mistake, Grimbeard tries to patch up the wound but it was too late.

Wracked with grief, Furious leads the dragons in a battle against the humans of Tomorrow, with casualties in the hundreds and the city left in ruins, but the humans emerge victorious. Feeling shameful and unworthy of being king now that he realized he had been decieved, Grimbeard hides 10 of his possessions all around the archipelago, stating that only the one with all 10 things would be worthy of being the next King of the Wilderwest so as to ensure they didn't commit the same mistakes as he did. He banishes Thugheart to the Outcast islands, leaving charge of the Hairy Hooligan tribe to his youngest son Chucklehead and finally, he imprisons Furious in the Berserker forests under the chains of the Hysterics before departing on his boat, never to be seen again. Furious himself would become known as The Beast, and would be used by the Berserkers to dispose of prisoners and enemies.

How to Break a Dragon's Heart[]

100 years later, Furious meets his blood brother's grand nephew of several generations, Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III, who intentionally re-imprisoned himself in hopes of striking a deal with the dragon. Furious however, is cynical and filled with hatred for all mankind thanks to his long imprisonment so Hiccup proposes an alternative: Furious will help to free all the prisoners on Berserker Island and never hurt a single human soul, but in exchange he will be allowed to roam free in the Northern Ocean, far from mankind. Furious agrees and with Hiccup on his back, gets to work. However, just as the prisoners are freed, Furious begins lighting the forest ablaze, proclaiming to Hiccup that his heart was cracked long ago, leaving him unable to keep promises. As such, he makes a new deal to Hiccup: he will leave the Archipelago for one year only, but after that he will return and start a dragon rebellion, ending all viking life. With that, Furious departs leaving Hiccup, his friends and the escapees to be rescued by the Hairy Hooligans.

How to Seize a Dragon's Jewel[]

Furious sent one of his dragon minions, the Deadly Shadow, a three-headed dragon, to find Hiccup. Once it found Hiccup, it did not attack him for recognizing the Lobster Claw Necklace.

How to Fight a Dragon's Fury[]

In the final battle, after Hiccup got crowned as king, Furious started fighting Hiccup when he rides his Windwalker Dragon. During the fight Furious, he manages to claim the Jewel from Hiccup and attempts to kill him, but decides against it when he sees Toothless trying to protect him just as how he tried to protect his own brother. However, Excellinor the Witch and her son Alvin the Treacherous ambush Furious and steal the Jewel, causing him to, in a fit of rage, redeclare war and order a draconic assault on the humans, as well as later reclaiming the jewel. Hiccup however, manages to convince him that even if he kills every viking, there are still many humans left that could easily end them and that dragons and people can live together, just as his brother once believed, and thus, Furious, tired of all the violence and war, officially ends the dragon rebellion and makes peace with the humans. When Hiccup was ambushed by Excellinor, Furious protected him and threw the witch into the geyser and she died. Furious got stabbed and got poisoned.

As he succumbs to the poison, he expresses his worry that after Hiccup dies, the dragons would be enslaved again. He is comforted however, as Hiccup tells him of his plan to hide the dragons away from humans until the time is right once he dies. Comforted in this knowledge, Furious decides to fulfil his promise to Hiccup, leaving the Archipelago to the northern waters, handing down rulership of the dragons to his second-in-command Luna and entrusting the future of his kind to Hiccup, never to be seen again.

Appearance[]

Furious is a Seadragonus Giganticus Maximus, the biggest and most powerful dragon species. He appeared very gigantic in size. He is about twenty times bigger than the blue whale. His scales are blue and he looks like a typical dragon, but way bigger. When Furious was captured, he appeared green, because he was covered in moss.

Personality[]

Prior to Hiccup II's death, Furious was a kind and loving dragon, who loved his brother more than ever. However, this was all changed when Hiccup was murdered before his very eyes by Grimbeard. This very incident would trigger a hatred for all humanity that would fester in him for the 100 years that he was locked away in the Berserker forests.

In the present day, Furious had become a cold-hearted and ruthless dragon hellbent on ending all humanity. He is also dishonest and untrustworthy to humans, which he claims is due to his heart being broken and limiting his ability to make promises, such as setting fire to the forest of Berserk and only agreeing to leave the archipelago for a year despite promising Hiccup to leave it forever, hopefully to sooth his rage. He has also become very xenophobic towards humans, believing that they must end each other one way or another, as even when Hiccup, a peaceful Viking wishing to end the violence, claims the Jewel he asks of him to end all of the dragons, believing that death would be preferable to the humans winning against them.

However, deep down, all Furious wanted was just to rid himself of the pain of losing Hiccup, with majority of his savagery being from his guilt of being unable to save him. Despite his claims to the contrary, the pain and grief of his surrogate brother, Hiccup Horrendous Haddock II continued to linger with Furious and was one of the main sources of his hatred for humanity, as though he acknowledged that both the Hiccup that had been his rider and the Hiccup of the present day were both people of compassion and kindness, Furious felt they failed to have what it took to succeed. Because of how the second Hiccup had perished at the hands of Grimbeard the Ghastly, Furious loathed the memory of Grimbeard, hating him for killing his master and imprisoning him. However, upon seeing the delusion and futility of his actions, Furious's hatred finally stills and, while still scared for the dragons' future, entrusts it to Hiccup before finally being freed from his unending anger.

Trivia[]

  • Just like all the other dragons who lived with the other Hiccups, Furious too has a scar on his chest.
  • As it's mentioned that Seadragonus Giganticus Maximuses only shrink when very old, this means Furious is at his prime during the series's events.
