~ Fuyuhiko Kuzuryu |
Fuyuhiko Kuzuryu is a major character of the Danganronpa franchise, serving as the tritagonist of Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair. He is also a supporting protagonist of the Danganronpa 3: The End of Hope's Peak Academy and a major character of the Danganronpa 2.5: Nagito Komaeda and the World Vanquisher . He possesses the title of the "Ultimate Yakuza."
Fuyuhiko remains confrontational during the first two chapters, and often utters death threats when angry. In Chapter 2, Fuyuhiko is revealed to have grown up with fellow classmate Peko Pekoyama. It is also revealed that he had a little sister named Natsumi, who was murdered, so he killed Natsumi's killer. After Peko was executed for killing Mahiru Koizumi, Fuyuhiko changed and became a trusted friend and ally, surviving the Neo World Program and returning to the real world.
Fuyuhiko returns in Danganronpa 3: The End of Hope's Peak Academy where he is a supporting protagonist in Side Despair, and ultimately brainwashed by Junko Enoshima. He is briefly seen as a member of Ultimate Despair in Side: Future, leading an army of brainwashed Yakuza members against the leaders of the Future Foundation.
He has been voiced in Japanese by Daisuke Kishio in games and anime. In the English dubbing in the games, he was voiced by Derek Stephen Prince, who also voiced Kokichi Ouma in Danganronpa V3). In the anime, he was voiced by Aaron Dismuke.
Appearance[]
Fuyuhiko is terribly short and has a childlike face. He has wavy blond hair, two curved shaved lines on either side of his head, and golden pupils. He has freckles on his nose and a mole under the corner of his mouth. There is a blush on his cheeks.
Fuyuhiko dresses in traditional yakuza style. In the game, he wears a two-piece suit of a black jacket and striped trousers over a white shirt. On his right lapel, he wears a brooch in the shape of the Kuzuryu clan's crest. He also wears a dark brown tie with the emblem of an animal skull, white black platform shoes, and two silver rings on his right hand. Since losing his eyes, he now wears a black armband with a white circular pattern.
Fuyuhiko as the Ultimate Despair wears a black fedora, jacket, and suit, with an untied scarf hanging from his shoulder. Perhaps his right eye has been replaced by Junko's.
Personality[]
Initially, Fuyuhiko is very rude and ill-mannered. He says that he had no intention of making friends with his classmates and claimed he could easily kill someone. However, this behavior could be a façade. For example, in Chapter 1, Fuyuhiko remarks he doesn't want to go to the class's party; however, he can then be found walking outside the hut where the party is taking place, despite declining the invitation.
Fuyuhiko is very aggressive and gets easily irritated when dealing with others. He is easily angered, threatened, and insulted when he is dissatisfied with others' behavior. He avoids getting involved with others.
After Peko's death, Fuyuhiko decides to change. He realizes his mistakes, changes his outlook on life, becomes more sociable, and avoids insulting others whenever possible, but he remains angry and impulsive. He tries to help others and cares for Nagito Komaeda, who is dying of the Despair Disease. Peko's sacrifice is a very painful topic for Fuyuhiko, and he avoids it.
In Free Time Events, it becomes clear that Fuyuhiko feels unworthy of his title. He wants to be strong on his own instead of relying on his family to succeed in life. His goal is to become strong in order to lead his family. Even when he becomes more friendly with his classmates, he is still dangerous. As Nagito warned Hajime, "If [he] talk[ed] about Fuyuhiko's childlike face, Fuyuhiko might tear off his fingers." Fuyuhiko reacts violently when people make fun of hi baby face. Fuyuhiko also likes sweets, but he thinks that it's unmanly and tries to keep it a secret. He is also ashamed that he does not have tattoos like "real yakuza."
Fuyuhiko takes his responsibilities very seriously. He is also the type of person who takes his morals very seriously. For example, he strongly opposes drinking alcohol, driving under the influence, and sex between minors. In the anime Danganronpa 3: The End of Hope's Peak High School it is revealed that he is one of the few students who regularly attends classes, even though they are not required. He also tried to stop Kazuichi Soda, who was under the influence of an aphrodisiac, from trying to seduce Sonia Nevermind.
History[]
Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair[]
Prologue - Welcome to Dangan Island! Panic at the Heart-Throbbing School Trip!?[]
Fuyuhiko was one of the students who did not panic when he was transported to Jabberwock Island. After the group was dismissed by Usami, he went off to explore with everyone else.
Fuyuhiko was first seen at the Hotel Mirai when Hajime tried to talk to him. Immediately, Fuyuhiko was aggressive, saying he did not want to get close to anyone. Before things could get too confusing, Nagito told him that he was just here for an introduction. Fuyuhiko was confused at first, but soon reluctantly introduced himself - albeit with the clarification that he had no intention of becoming pals with anyone. After brief introductions, Fuyuhiko tells Hajime to leave if he has nothing else to say.
Chapter 1 - Destination Despair[]
In the first chapter, Fuyuhiko refuses to interact with other people despite his prickly attitude.
Fuyuhiko's absence from the party made him the second suspect in the murder of "Byakuya Togami." He was only cleared of suspicion after Chiaki Nanami revealed that she saw him and Monomi wandering in front of the hotel near the hut of the party. In other words, Fuyuhiko really wanted to go to the party with everyone else, but didn't go because he was embarrassed. He also revealed that he had a real relationship with Peko, immediately coming to her defense when she came under suspicion.
Chapter 2 - Sea and Punishment, Sin and Coconuts[]
In Chapter 2, Fuyuhiko remains aloof and doesn't try to get close to anyone.
Fuyuhiko becomes the first person who manages to follow the "true" path in the Twilight Syndrome Murder Case, which was the motive for Chapter 2. As a reward, he receives an envelope with a photo that seems to confirm that the events of the game are connected to the Sato and Natsumi murders. He later sends this envelope to Mahiru and tries to meet with her to see if the murder disaster is real. However, Mahiru begins to avoid Fuyuhiko, which Fuyuhiko believes is proof that the events of the game are true.
Fuyuhiko, driven by a thirst for revenge, hires Peko to help him isolate and kill Mahiru. Fuyuhiko learns that Mahiru plans to meet Hiyoko at the beach house on the second island to talk about the photos Mahiru sent her, and forges messages so that the two girls arrive at the beach house at different times. After Peko intercepts and disarms Hiyoko, Fuyuhiko waits for Mahiru to arrive and plots to kill her with a metal bat to ironically massacre her sister. At the same time, however, Fuyuhiko becomes increasingly anxious about his plan, whether because of fear of failure or remorse.
When Mahiru arrives, Fuyuhiko tells her about the photos explains their connection to the Twilight Syndrome murders. However, upon learning that Fuyuhiko killed Sato, Mahiru responded by lecturing Fuyuhiko on his own immorality.
Enraged by her words, Fuyuhiko lunged at the bat, but Peko grabbed it and killed Mahiru first. Fuyuhiko was stunned and frightened to learn what awaited Peko, but reluctantly obeyed her call to have a plan and fled through the tunnel.
During the class trial, Fuyuhiko again did his best to deflect suspicion away from Peko. Fuyuhiko's fierce defense of the Ultimate Swordswoman aroused the suspicions of those around him. In the end, to Fuyuhiko's horror, a vote was taken and Peko was found guilty.
After the vote, Peko announced her true plan: to sacrifice herself to allow Fuyuhiko to escape. Peko sacrificed herself to allow Fuyuhiko to escape. Peko maintained that she was Fuyuhiko's bodyguard and that she was merely a tool to carry out Fuyuhiko's will. Thus, Peko claimed that Fuyuhiko was the real mastermind behind Mahiru's murder and that because the students voted for Fuyuhiko, he was able to get away with murder and gain his freedom at the cost of everyone's lives. Nagito, however, pointed out that all of Peko's claims were based on her opinion that Fuyuhiko viewed Peko as a tool, which encouraged other students to get the truth from Fuyuhiko. Despite Peko's entreaties and her own desire to leave the island, Fuyuhiko grumbles that he can't call Peko a tool and doesn't want to live like that.
As Peko resigns herself to her fate, Fuyuhiko begins to break down and tells his loyal bodyguard that he never considered Peko a tool. When Monokuma begins to chastise him, Fuyuhiko tearfully begs him not to abandon Peko, saying that he only needs Peko as a person, not as a tool.
Somehow, Fuyuhiko was taken to the execution site with Peko. Fuyuhiko attempted to save Peko, but was accidentally cut when Peko attacked Monokuma's puppet. Fuyuhiko was severely wounded in his right eye and rendered unconscious at the hands of Pekoyama. When the puppets came to kill him, Peko protected her master one last time, covering him with her body as her enemies repeatedly attacked her.
After the execution, everyone thought Fuyuhiko was dead, but Monomi reports that he is barely alive. Mikan reports that his injuries are very serious, but Monomi tells him that it was Monokuma's fault for saving his life, since he wasn't vilified this time (according to Monokuma's rules, the culprit of murder is only punishable by death if he is correctly identified by others). Unable to break his own rule, Monokuma called an ambulance and sent Fuyuhiko for treatment.
Chapter 3 - Trapped by the Ocean Scent[]
Fuyuhiko was successfully dragged to the hospital on the 3rd island and rescued by Monokuma. Everyone comes to visit him at the hospital, Fuyuhiko remains quiet as he thinks about what he has done.
A patch over his right eye is added to Fuyuhiko's appearance due to the loss of his right eye during the execution.
Fuyuhiko begins to realize that the way he treated the others and what he did was wrong, and he decides to atone for his mistakes.
As soon as he feels a little better, he goes to the restaurant and introduces himself loudly, which means that he now wishes to cooperate with the others.
Hiyoko is unwilling to forgive him for the death of her friend, Fuyuhiko realizes that he doesn't deserve her forgiveness but to comfort himself he says he has to do something. Fuyuhiko commits harakiri in front of the others, falling down and bleeding.
Hiyoko is shocked but refuses to forgive Fuyuhiko.
Fuyuhiko is taken back to the hospital where he spends some of his time.
Ibuki decides to throw a party in honor of Fuyuhiko's return and invites him there.
To the surprise of the others, Fuyuhiko accepts the invitation and comes. Hiyoko comes too, but still refuses to forgive him.
Then Monokuma announces a new motive: the Despair Disease. Fuyuhiko starts to worry about the others, especially the sick Nagito, Ibuki, and Akane. This is one of the reasons why Hajime, Mikan, and he stay at the hospital to look after the sick.
However, Monokuma only allows one student to stay at the hospital overnight. The group decides that Mikan would be the best one to stay behind and care for the patients, leaving Fuyuhiko and Hajime to travel back to their huts each night.
After a while, Kazuichi contacts the hospital. Fuyuhiko and Hajime contact the others at a certain time each day. Everything goes swimmingly until Hajime answers the call from the other group by himself, only to see a live feed of someone with a canvas bag on their head hanging themselves. Alarmed, Hajime runs around the island to gather assistance. Together, Chiaki, Fuyuhiko, and Hajime break down the door where the body was supposed to be. To everyone's surprise, they find two bodies: Ibuki Mioda and Hiyoko Saionji.
This time at the class trial, Fuyuhiko cooperates with the others and helps solve the case.
It turns out that Mikan also contracted the disease, so she committed murder. But unlike the others, her symptoms were a recovery of lost memories that shocked the others.
After Mikan's execution, Fuyuhiko returns to the hut like everyone else.
Relationships[]
- Natsumi Kuzuryu - Natsumi is Fuyuhiko's little sister, who he considers to be annoying and a pain. After Natsumi is murdered by Sato, Fuyuhiko is visibly upset by her death, and murders Sato himself as payback.
- Peko Pekoyama - Fuyuhiko cares about Peko as a human being, and rejects the idea of her being his tool. He is devastated by Peko's execution to the point where he cries and begs her not to leave her. He also tries to save her at the cost of his own eye.
Trivia[]
- Fuyuhiko lost his eye in both the real world and the Neo World Program.
