Villain Overview

People are sinful and foolish. Even knowing full well that they’re being tricked and manipulated into doing so, humans can’t help but engage in the act of killing each other. I seek the Book in order to cleanse them of this sin.
~ Fyodor's reason for obtaining the Book.
People can be so simple. They truly believe they are thinking for themselves. [...] If they discover something themselves, they see value in that. They don't want to think they're being led by the nose.
~ Fyodor's beliefs on human rationality.

Fyodor Dostoevsky is the main antagonist of the Bungo Stray Dogs franchise.

Fyodor is the leader of an underground organization called the Rats in the House of the Dead, and is the founder and former member of the Decay of the Angel. His goal is to find the reality altering book that's hidden deep within Yokohama to use it and rid the world of all its ability users.

Because of his very high level of intellect, Fyodor is one of the most difficult opponents the Armed Detective Agency has ever faced. He serves as both the acquaintance and archenemy of Osamu Dazai. He is based off of the Russian author with the same name.

He is voiced by Akira Ishida in Japanese (who also voiced Akaza in Demon Slayer) and Ray Chase in English (who also voiced Sukuna in Jujutsu Kaisen, Rustal Elion in Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron Blooded Orphans, Rubber Soul in JoJo's Bizarre Adventures: Stardust Crusaders, Dr. Genus in One-Punch Man, and Mesmeroth in Oceanhorn 2: Knights of the Lost Realm). His stage play/live action portrayal is Yūta Kishimoto.

Appearance[]

Fyodor is a tall, pale, and slim young man with long, dark, and messy hair that reaches his shoulders. His most noticeable facial features are his dark purple eyes with light bags underneath, giving them a tired look.

Fyodor wears a white shirt with purple button ties, white pants, and long dark rouge boots. Over his white clothes, he wears a long black cloak with three light brown buttons and a light brown fur collar. He also wears a fluffy white ushanka hat.

Personality[]

Although he's a very cryptic individual, those who know Fyodor (like Dazai) know that he is an unpredictable mastermind. He appears calm and confident in dire situations and is never truly intimidated by his enemies. Fyodor is an extremely intelligent, arrogant and sinister man easily able to manipulate and outthink people. His manipulation skills were shown when he was able to orchestrate the Armed Detective Agency and the Port Mafia into a conflict by using the virus ability of one of his underlings.

Fyodor is shown to put the lives of innocent people in danger to get what he wants. During the cannibalism incident, he was heartless enough to psychologically manipulate a little girl into blowing herself up to "save her brother" when in reality, he convinced her to do it just to crush Kunikida's spirit. While the Agency and the Mafia were hunting Fyodor down, he used a random man in a hood with grenades in his mouth as a distraction.

Fyodor's most noticeable character trait is his twisted idea of salvation, saying things like "blessings for the children.", "happiness to the world.", and "God wants perfection and harmony." all the while committing cruel and unforgivable acts of evil. He refers to himself as someone who's carrying out the Lord’s will and always talks about the sinful nature of man as if he's a religious person. Ironically, Dazai refers to him as 'Demon', meaning that Fyodor's actions are nowhere close to the Lord's will and that he's possibly just making his action sound noble.

When it comes to his lackeys from the Rats in the House of the Dead and his allies from the Decay of the Angel, Fyodor views them as pawns he uses to help him achieve his goals and cast them aside later on. He neglected Nathanial Hawthorne's wish to save Margaret Mitchell by brainwashed him and erasing his memories of everything other than her, using his desire to save her for his own benefits. When Sigma finished playing his roll at the Sky Casino, he betrayed him out of nowhere by having brainwashed Nathanial attempt to assassinate him. Dazai even stated that Fyodor would have killed Sigma if he hadn't chosen him to be his helper during the prison break.

Biography[]

With his ability, Fyodor has lived for an extremely long time, having had one person kill him then take over their body as a result and so on. One of his oldest and so far, only known past life is when he let himself get abducted by Bram Stoker and his men during a presumed medieval time period. Having been killed by Bram's executioner and taken over the man's body.

He also played a hand in the Decay of the Angel Incident and the group itself becoming a reality. At some unknown time, Fyodor manipulated Fukuchi by creating a fake prophecy about a world war happening in 36 years, urging Fukuchi to start the global terrorism plot and frame the detective agency.

Ability Wars Saga[]

In the manga, Fyodor is first seen when discussing the bounty operation with Francis Scott Key Fitzgerald and Dame Agatha Christie, mentioning that he has foreseen the battle between Atsushi and Akutagawa.

In the anime, Fyodor makes his first appearance at the end of the Guild Arc. After the defeat of Francis by the hands of Atsushi Nakajima and Akutagawa Ryuunosuke, Fyodor hacks into the system of the Moby Dick ship, taking total control of it with the intention to make it crash into Yokohama. In the end, the ship gets stopped thanks to the efforts of Kyoka Izumi, who crashed the plane she was trapped in into the Moby Dick to send it off-course. Despite this, Fyodor seems to be satisfied with the results, as he was able to heavily damage the Guild and even recruit one of their former members, Nathaniel Hawthorne, who joined him in order to save his friend. Fyodor implies that he is ready to dive into action by giving people the mercy of death for the sake of a better world.

Spreading disinformation about the leftover Guild's fortune, his plan is set in motion in order to lure criminal organizations and bring a wave of crime. Dazai states this truth, while a focused Fyodor is somewhere at the bay staring at the sea. Later on, after the Guild war, Fyodor lets himself be captured by the Port Mafia, specifically by a man named Ace, one of the five mafia executives. While Ogai Mori, Kōyō Ozaki, and Ace discuss his fate, he is detained in an underground prison. Ace tries to convince him to join his side in overthrowing Mori with death as an answer if he says no. Through clever manipulation, Fyodor easily tricks Ace, causing Ace to commit suicide, and he obtains the important files where the data on all the Port Mafia members were stored on.

Later on, two months before the Cannibalism started, Fyodor broke into the base of the Seventh Agency to break Mushitaro Oguri out of his cell in need of his special ability (to erase evidence) and cooperation.

Decay of the Angel Saga[]

After spreading false info about The Guilds hidden assets, stealing the Port Mafia documents, and recruiting Mushitaro Oguri, he then starts the operation named "Cannibalism" by poisoning the leaders of the Port Mafia and the Armed Detective Agency through the virus ability of one of his subordinates. He then encounters Dazai, to whom Fyodor reveals his true goal: to find the powerful book that can make anything written in it become reality in order to eliminate all the ability users on earth. He then has a sniper shoot Dazai and tells Dazai that his vitals weren't hit because he still has a part to play in his plan. His operation forces both the Agency and the Mafia to fight against each other, but ultimately, thanks to the efforts of many, the ability user of the virus is found and stopped, releasing the two leaders from the virus. Despite all of this, Fyodor manages to escape, but he is then found by Dazai and Fitzgerald, who used the Eyes of God to find him. In the end, Fyodor gets caught by the Special Division of Unusual Powers, but not before killing one of the guards with his mysterious ability. After getting threatened by Ango Sakaguchi, Fyodor is finally taken away.

After getting caught, Fyodor is brought to Meursault, a European prison designed to hold ability users that is isolated from the rest of the world. It was then revealed that the 'Cannibalism' operation was actually a part of something bigger, and that he also is a member of the terrorist organization called Decay of the Angel, which possesses one page from the powerful book. While he remains in prison, the Armed Detective Agency gets framed by the Decay and accused of killing government officials and gets persecuted by the special forces known as the Hunting Dogs. Due to his past crimes in the Mafia being exposed by Mushitaro's "death" (the effects of his ability are erased), Dazai gets brought to the same prison where Fyodor was held in, and the two spend time by talking to each other. By using his intelligence, Fyodor also helps the leader of the Decay of the Angel, Ōchi Fukuchi, to get the powerful ability weapon One Order, which gets neutralized by Dazai thanks to him telling Ango to negotiate with the Prime Minister of Japan.

Afterwards, Nikolai Gogol and Sigma (both of whom are also members of the Decay) enter the prison. Gogol starts a game between Fyodor and Dazai to see who can escape the prison, where only one of them can leave, while the other will die, by making them inject themselves with a poison that will kill them in 30 minutes.

Fyodor also made preparations to make a vampire infected Chūya Nakahara break him out of prison. As Fyodor and vampire Chūya attempt to make their leave, Dazai floods them in a room where it is all ability proof. However, Fyodor was able to have Chūya drain the water by using gravity to jam the door before it closed. The two of them then went to kill the Time-stopping Ability User, who was (unknowingly) helping Ango communicate with Dazai. When Dazai and Sigma entered the elevator, Fyodor gave them the same trial of water. Sigma escapes first, relatively unharmed, while Dazai escapes afterwards with a broken leg after the elevator stops falling. Dazai tells the camera that he is in pain, and asks Fyodor to "help him relax," to which Fyodor responds by sending Chūya to kill Dazai.

Sigma finds a note that says "Help me" in Russian, and heads over for Fyodor. He shoots a warning shot and tells Fyodor to take back his order to kill Dazai. Fyodor tells Sigma that it only took Dazai 10 minutes to manipulate Sigma into following his whims, making Sigma want to become part of the Armed Detective Agency. Sigma acknowledges that Dazai might be manipulating him, but Dazai paid a price for it and that it's "the Casino's style to match the customer's stakes." Because Fyodor is attempting to manipulate him, Sigma deduces that Fyodor has no more backup and is afraid of his gun. Sigma's ability is to exchange information with anyone he touches, and Dazai planned for Sigma to take information from Fyodor's dead body. He decides to ask Fyodor what his ability is, before he shoots him.

Fyodor appears to have split-personality disorder, with the other personality appearing to front, and offers Sigma a 'special' knife to kill him. However, when Sigma gets close enough to him, he stabs Sigma in the stomach. Fyodor tells Sigma that he knew that Sigma would fall for his trick, saying that he "put on a little show" to take Sigma's gun, and that the knife was just some security guard's knife. He tells Sigma that if he joins the Armed Detective Agency, this pain will continue to follow him because he'll be his enemy, asking if he still wants to join them.

Sigma makes a lunge for the gun, only for Fyodor to kick him in the face. Fyodor then says that he was "testing his resolve" and offers Sigma his hand, telling him to take any information from him, if he has the courage to reach his hand.

Wanting to know all of his secrets, Sigma grabs Fyodor's hand. Seeing a torrent of light which was information. After receiving it all, Sigma falls to the ground. Fyodor points his attention towards Chūya and Dazai and tells Chūya to take Dazai out with a gun, so his vampiric state won't be nullified. Dazai tries to talk some sense into Chūya only for him to get shot in the forehead.

Shortly after, Fyodor makes it out of the prison and is greeted by Nikolai. Before handing over the antidote for the drug, Nikolai asks Fyodor how he was able to make contact with the outside world, and Fyodor states that he had Meursault's security forces turned into vampires. Before he gets into the helicopter, Fyodor takes a moment to realize that Dazai is one of the two people to have cause him harm. Due to the injurie on his hand, he orders one of his vampire accomplices to piolet the helicopter. However, Due to Bram Stoker regaining control over his ability again, Fyodor gets stabbed in the abdomen by the vampire infected pilot while sitting and letting his guard down, only then to see that Dazai is still alive as the latter emerges from the building. Dazai then tells Fyodor that his weakness was not trusting the people he can't manipulate and that he lacked allies, he then explained that Chūya was never a vampire as the latter takes out his red contacts and the only reason he survived twice was because Chūya used his gravity manipulation to slow down the elevator when it was falling, and he used it to stop the bullet, before it went through his skull. Dazai then walks away after taking the case containing the antidote as he lets the infected Pilot driving Fyodor who was unable to reach for the joystick due to his wounds, which led the vehicle to then impact towards a signal tower and crashing onto the ground behind Dazai and the others as Fyodor remarks his disbelief before his life flashes as the Helicopter ignites a powerful explosion, finally Killing Fyodor once and for all.

New Saga[]

Later, Dazai and Chūya go back into the prison for Sigma and is found unconscious after taking countless years of Fyodor's memories. Dazai becomes suspicious about what the two of two of them talked about and is on edge about Fyodor's death. Dazai wonders why Fyodor let Sigma use his ability on him and then suspects that it was all so he could mask his ability. Dazai and Chūya return outside and to grab Fyodor's dead body out of the destroyed helicopter; true to his suspicions, he finds the corpse bearing a different face from Fyodor, rhetorically asking who the man is.

After putting all of the pieces together, Dazai finally figures out what Fyodor's true ability is. Back at the airport, Bram senses danger unfolding in his body and warns Aya to run. Bram starts agenizing in pain and transforms into Fyodor, with the holy sword and Amenogozen in his hands. Before Teruko and Fukuzawa can stop him, he stabs Fukuchi (who was in his final breath) with the holy sword and Amenogozen, combining the powers of both swords and Fukuchi's ability together to create a tripolar singularity.

The singularity, Ame-no-gozen; kills Teruko and Fyodor explains to Fukuzawa what it is and that he alone can control it. Fukuzawa calls out to Fyodor for manipulating Fukuchi into starting the Decay of the Angel Incident, manipulating the vampires, the government, and using the war that would happen in 36 years as a way to further his plan. Hearing all that, Fyodor adds insult to injury by revealing that the war Fukuchi was trying to prevent was a lie he made up by creating a fake prophesy that looked believable and inclined Fukuchi to send the prophesy to himself 36 years into the past, angering Fukuzawa for letting his best friend's wishes for world peace and the lengths he went too in order to achieve it fall into vain and mockery. Fukuzawa charges at the Russian in rage but Fyodor commands Ame-no-gozen to destroy the airport and the areas near it in one attack with Fukuzawa and Aya getting caught in the crossfire. Kunikida and Junichiro make their way onto the battle filed but are easily overpowered by Ame-no-gozen and the being kills both Kunikida, Junichiro, and Kenji.

Before Ame-no-gozen could kill Atsushi, Fyodor approaches the boy and explains to him why every he and everyone else is so interested in him and summarizes it by saying that he's the "Bookmark" for the reality altering book. Atsushi refuses to believe a word he says after he killed his friends but Fyodor gaslight him into thinking his friends would never have been killed if he had done better and that their blood is on his hands.

After explaining more about what Ame-no-gozen is, he asks Atsushi if he cares to join him. Expecting him to say no, he bribes him by saying the Armed Detective Agency can be saved by using the back of the page. Atsushi sorrowfully excepts the deal without hesitation but just as he was about to grab the page, Ame-no-gozen impales him. Fyodor reveals that he has no interest in Atsushi himself, but rather the part of him that's associated with the "Bookmark". Atsushi grabs Fyodor by the leg and tells him he'll give him his life as long as his allies are saved. Disgusted by his self-sacrificial thinking, Fyodor kicks Atsushi and orders Ame-no-gozen decapitate him due to everything from the neck up being enough to qualify for the "Bookmark": However, Akutagawa comes in to save him and fights Ame-no-gozen.

DEAD APPLE[]

At the beginning, Fyodor is seen observing the battle between the Port Mafia and Tatsuhiko Shibusawa, finding it fun. Six years later in the present, where he helps Tatsuhiko with his operation to collect all the abilities by transforming them into gems and get Dazai. He then helps Tatsuhiko to get his memories back and unleash his full power. After Tatsuhiko gets defeated, Fyodor leaves, mentioning that he needs to get the Book.

Powers and Abilities[]

  • Crime and Punishment is the ability of Fyodor. It allows Fyodor to take over the body of anyone who commits the "Crime" of killing him and "Punishes" them by turning them into "the next Fyodor Dostoevsky", giving them the facial appearance of Fyodor himself. The power also works when the person that killed him is nothing but a tool under someone else's control. There for, that said someone else will be the one affected by his ability; case in point the vampire that killed Fyodor was being controlled by Bram, making Bram the victim of Fyodor's ability. Seemingly unique to Fyodor’s ability, when separated from his body, Crime and Punishment did not turn on Fyodor to attack him during the Yokohama Fog Incident, whereas everyone else was attacked by their stray abilities. The ability itself stated that it was the “punishment” for Fyodor’s “crime”, and claimed the two were close acquaintances, eliminating any threat the ability could pose to its wielder; in other words, the reason Fyodor's ability didn't turn against him is because the activation of it requires someone to kill him.
  • Genius-level Intellect: Fyodor is one of if not the smartest character in the series. He is able to outsmart the two greatest minds of the Armed Detective Agency, Ranpo and Dazai. Fyodor even predicted that the Agency would attempt to find the virus ability user, Pushkin. Because he knew that, he set up traps to force them to fight the Port Mafia. Ranpo even admits that going up against Fyodor is like going up against Dazai.
  • Master Manipulator: Fyodor's most fearsome trait is how crafty and cunning he is, there were times where he let himself get captured to achieve a task. When he was captured by Ace, Fyodor told Karma that his ability allows him to control space and conscious. However, he only told him that because he knew Ace was listening to their conversation. With the false information, Fyodor made Ace think he was using an ability on him and that the only way to leave his "mind trapping ability" was to kill himself while trapped in it to return to the real world, which caused Ace to end his own life.

Trivia[]

  • The organization he's the leader of, the Rats in the House of the Dead, is named after the real-life Fyodor's book written in 1861 called The House of the Dead.
  • Fyodor’s ability, Crime and Punishment, is named after the book of the same name (рус. Преступление и Наказание) written by his author counterpart. It portrays the story of Rodion Raskolnikov, a destitute student who commits murder and attempts to justify his crimes are for the greater good, only to be chased by the repercussions of his actions. The book itself is very famous and is widely regarded as Dostoevsky’s masterpiece.
  • He has a habit of biting the tip of his thumb.
  • According to him, he possesses a weak anemic condition; in other words, he has anemia.
  • According to the DEAD APPLE guide, Fyodor takes an interest in people with a good complexion
  • Fyodor's last words before he "died" were "Eli, Eli, lama Sabachthani?" which translates to "My God, my God, why hast Thou forsaken me?". The same phrase also repeats in Matthew 27:46 and also Mark 15:34.
