~ General Allance Wilkins describes the G-Nome. |
Sergeant Ronald J. Pearl, later known as the G-Nome, is the titular antagonist of the 1997 mech shooter video game G-Nome.
Once an upstanding soldier serving the Union Alliance and the closest friend of Sergeant Joshua Gant, Pearl was betrayed by Jack Sheridan. Presumed killed in action, he was actually captured by the Scorp and experimented on for ten years, leading to him being turned into the G-Nome. As the G-Nome, it is considered a dangerous weapon that the Union is determined to euthanize.
Biography[]
Background[]
Sergeant Ronald Pearl served alongside his best friend Joshua Gant, as well as Stephen Kylie. In 2215, Pearl was on a mission in Scorp territory of the planet Ruhelen with Gant, Kylie and the Scorp specialist Jack Sheridan, when they were ambushed. Sheridan betrayed the mission, leaving Pearl alone and overwhelmed by Scorp forces. With no body to bury, Pearl was officially classified as missing in action, which allowed for Sheridan to be acquitted at his court martial. Gant would resign from his commission in protest and be haunted by nightmares about Pearl's demise.
Unknown to the Union, Pearl was held in Scorp custody and experimented on in the G-Nome laboratory of Sector 14B, ruled by Directorate Prees Tak. Through this time, Pearl was mutilated into a feral super-soldier, intended to give the Scorp the advantage on the battlefield in the anticipated conflict with the Union.
G-Nome[]
In 2225, General Allance Wilkins of the Union Intelligence Agency (UIA) becomes aware of the G-Nome experiments and assembles a team to euthanize the creature, led by none other than Gant himself. After assembling his team that includes Kylie, Sheridan and the newcomer Dr. Victoria Thane, Gant closes in on and destroys the G-Nome facility. The G-Nome escapes, just as Sheridan attempts to kill Gant. Aided by his battalion of rebels, Sheridan captures the G-Nome by pacifying it with a neural inhibitor device and heads for the Frayed Valley of the Shalten Frontier, where he has a recombination facility for cloning.
After Sheridan arrives at his laboratory with the G-Nome in tow, his base is besieged by Gant's team. Gant destroys the laboratory, though Sheridan kills Kylie and attempts to flee with the G-Nome in the cargo bay of his Union Heavy Assault HAWC. Gant intercepts and fights Sheridan, disabling his vehicle in the process.
With Sheridan dead, the G-Nome breaks out of the cargo bay and intimidates Gant. Gant neutralizes the creature, but after moving in, sees "R. PEARL" on its paw, revealing that it was once his best friend. Gant notifies Wilkins that he killed both Sheridan and the G-Nome. As the G-Nome awakens, Gant, calling it "Pearl", tells the beast to flee. The G-Nome complies and trudges off into the sunset.
In the aftermath of the operation, Wilkins rummages through the remains of the recombination facility, where he discovers a pitri dish labelled "G-NOME: PEARL" that he discretely pockets.
Trivia[]
- In the original drafts of G-Nome, Pearl is not the G-Nome, but Gant's best friend who cooperates with him throughout the story, until he killed in the final act by the treacherous General Robert Trenton. During later drafts, Pearl was rewritten as being the G-Nome himself, while Stephen Kylie assumes most of his role.
- While Pearl is not seen in the final version of the game, he is described in the original drafts as being a black career soldier.
