G.U.N. Colonel is a minor antagonist in Sonic the Hedgehog comic book series by Archie Comics. He was an Overlander in charge of Guardian Units of the Nation fifty years before the events of the series, and was the one responsible for the raid on the Space Colony ARK.
Biography[]
In 3186, the unnamed colonel felt frustrated that Gerald Robotnik didn't want to hand his project over to the military, making him suspect that the professor was plotting against his superiors. As a preemptive measure, he had G.U.N. raid the Space Colony ARK where he worked on Codename: Shadow just as the project neared completion. The soldiers managed to capture Robotnik, but he made efforts to ensure his granddaughter Maria and Shadow got away. Sadly, only Shadow escaped, while Maria was shot when caught helping him.
After the colonel informed the imprisoned Gerald of Maria's death, the scientist went mad, scheming to avenge his granddaughter even if he had to destroy Mobius in the process. When forced to continue his work on Shadow under military supervision, he upgraded him so that he would fulfill his vengeance plan even in the event of his death. The colonel suspected Gerald was up to something, and thus made the decision to execute him and discontinue Codename: Shadow. The island where Gerald worked was then sealed off, and Shadow would only be discovered fifty years later by his creator's grandson.
Personality[]
The Colonel was a paranoid and very ruthless person. When Gerald refused to hand over his project to the military, he immediately (and wrongfully) suspected him of plotting against G.U.N. and had him captured, not even caring about the fact that the raid he was apprehended in resulted in the death of Gerald's granddaughter. When he suspected Gerald of treason again (this time correctly), he quickly had him killed. He didn't seem to care about Shadow's fate, having planned to keep him sealed on Prison Island forever.
Trivia[]
- Despite the Colonel's unnatural hair color indicating that he is an Overlander rather than a human, he has five fingers instead of four.
- He is essentially the overarching antagonist from Shadow’s perspective (including his entire character arc) due to being responsible for the infamous raid, which initiated all the tragic events that occurred afterwards.
